Apple has shipped another mega-update to address security vulnerabilities affecting Mac OS X users, warning that the most serious issues could lead to arbitrary code execution attacks. The update, available for tiger and Leopard, addresses a total of 34 documented vulnerabilities, some in third-party components like ClamAV, BIND, OpenSSH and Ruby. You may have heard last week that I brought down a rampaging, blood thirsty tiger using a tranquilizer gun. I saved a team of scientists and Russian television crew in the process. This is all true. It was instinct and nothing more.I did want to clear up the circumstances of this event though. I was on an expedition to study tigers and see if the cartoon I had recently seen called Thundercats could ever become reality. The Gadget : A pair of yellow-tinted glasses you wear at the computer that claim to reduce "Digital Eye Fatigue" and "Computer Vision Syndrome." In other words, they get rid of eye strain and headaches related to eye strain. It also claims to give you "sharper, clearer vision," as well as improve your performance because "the eyes are relaxed." How? By "improving eye focus, reducing glare and blocking artificial light." The Price : The price is variable, but a random sampling of different frame types cost anywhere between $99 at the low end and nearly $200 at the high end. The bulk of the frames, however, land somewhere in between. Ours, the Wi-Five, cost $139. The Verdict : It actually works. The curvature and wrapping of the lenses around your eyes cause some slight distortion when you're turning your head or using your peripheral vision (a.k.a. early boss, wife or mom warning system), which takes a short while to get used to. Our first try was met with slight nausea within a few minutes. We persevered, despite everything looking (and maybe even smelling and tasting) a urine-yellow. We don't normally experience eye-strain when at the computer, so when we wore the Gunnars for a solid day of blogging—from start to finish—we didn't experience any clearer vision or performance gain that we could tell. The code exploits a flaw in QuickTime that causes a crash when a unusually-long parameter is passed along with a movie file. While it's not demonstrated, the hacker claims that "code execution may be possible." With Leopard, address space randomization makes it more difficult to execute code in memory spaces left after a crash. Earlier operating systems (like tiger and Panther) may still be vulnerable. Apple hasn't released any guidelines to avoid the problem, as it does in high-risk cases. Intego, in a press release, considered the risk "low" and will be updating its VirusBarrier X5 software if someone creates malicious software based on the attack technique. Even though the risk may be low, an abundance of caution is always advised. Be careful when opening (or clicking links to) QuickTime files from sources unknown to you. In the past, phishing/malware attacks have been delivered as fake QuickTime or Windows Media codecs, so remember that any executable file you download from an unfamiliar source may be suspect. He was leading a Pink tiger Brigade to infiltrate up the Rear of the Sinhala Army that had reached the outskirts of Mullathivu. Even though his unit was able to ram the SLA from behind, Kumaran Master was unlucky and got hit by a stray piece of Shrapnel from an SL Air force bomb that was targeting a Village of Innocent Eelamian Children. The Bomb missed its intended target however it landed in the midst of the Pink tiger Unit as it was performing its rear entry attack of the Sinhala forces. Kumaran Master was killed shortly thereafter. May he Rest in Peace. In other tragic news, another LTTE Leader, Thennaman (CODENAME: Rudolph) was killed in a town close to Mallavi as he made his daily journey to buy pittu and sambol. Once again a GENOCIDICA™ Air strike intended to Hit the Mallavi Hospital and Local School ended up going off course and hitting Thennaman’s Jeep. He was killed instantly in the Blast. RIP brave ...
