My friend, Elliott Curson, who ran much of the 1980 ad campaign for Reagan and has a penchant for asking the regular folk how they see elections. At breakfast the other day he asked Carman Luntzel, chef and owner of Carmen's Country Kitchen in South Philadelphia, whether she thought Sarah Palin looked nervous during her Charles Gibson interview on ABC. "She's expected to be nervous," said Lentzel. "She's a girl. She's supposed to excuse herself after dinner and let the men to adjourn to smoke cigars in another room." She also said, "Keep your eyes on Sarah's tits." This is from a woman who says "We need Obama." Given enough room, Kate Smith has to be turning over in her grave. In what has to be the most brainless moves in political and sports history - other than Texas Ranger managing partner, George Bush trading Sammy Sosa to the Chicago Cubs for Harold Baines - National Hockey League Philadelphia Flyers owner, Ed Snider is bringing in Republican Vice Presidential nominee, Sarah Palin to drop the ceremonial first puck at the Flyers home opener Saturday night. Besides the fact that it is an overt politically-partisan move by Snider, who is a major Republican donor, that will completely distract from the united fan front of such an evening, the presumed "mixed" reaction from the fans, where boos always echo far louder than cheers, will send the embarrassing YouTube clip swirling breakneck viral through the net until November 5. Philadelphia doesn't take kindly to any icon, friendly or not, messing with their sports teams. Has Snider forgotten Santa Claus being pelted with snowballs at the Eagles game? Nothing different than it's been for the past three presidential campaigns as media and John McCain campaign forecasters are calling for a severe low expectation for the Republican candidate, leading to a deluge of mistakes, misleads and loose generalizations by McCain that will be either ignored or rationalized as "doing the best he can." Meanwhile, as always, the Democratic candidate, this time, Barack Obama, will be expected to be articulate, detailed and perfect with any deviation from that prediction throwing the debate into the Republican camp. MSNBC will call it for Obama. FoxNews for McCain. The debate will be followed the press criticizing itself and saying next time they'll do a better job. And America will once again hail their Democracy as working just dandy. SEE/HEAR UNCAMOUFLAGED BOOING LINKED BELOW Philadelphia Flyers owner and major Republican donor, Ed Snider piped in the loudest music he could, but it couldn't camouflage the Philly boos snowing down on Republican VP nominee, Sarah Palin. In what will be known forever in Philly history as the Palin Curse, it set the scene for one of the Flyers' worst opening night, opening period performances ever as they found themselves down to the New York Rangers, 4-0 before the first period was over. In what should have been a sweet, memorable moment for Philadelphian Kathy O'Connell, voted the Flyers top hockey mom, Snider forced O'Connell to become part of a national embarrassment when Palin was bought onto the ice next to her to a barrage of boos from the Philly Congrats McCain campaign. With polls showing Obama leading comfortably, the McCain campaign confirmed it was pulling staff and advertising out of the economically-distressed original 48 American states. The GOP nominee also canceled a visit there slated for next week. Republicans had poured money into an effort to try to place the U.S. in the Republican column this year. "Operations will be scaled back," said Mike DuHaime, the campaign's political director. "We'll continue fighting the good fight in Alaska, Hawaii and Guam, but right now we're going to focus on the states where the fundamentals of the economy are still strong." Republican Vice Presidential candidate, Sarah Palin, caught off guard by the READ THE REST OF THE UNBELIEVABLE EVENTS RIGHT HERE. In what should send shockwaves through the Republican Party, Republican Vice President nominee, Sarah Palin, called for President Bush to step down as President. In referring to President Bush's August, 2007 comments that our bombings in Afghan have killed innocent civilians, Palin told Fox News reporter Carl Cameron: "Some of his comments that he has made about the war that I think may -- in my world- disqualifies someone from consideration as commander in chief." Palin said, "Some of his comments about Afghanistan and what we are doing there supposedly- just air raiding villages and killing civilians. That's reckless." The McCain campaign immediately clarified Palin's statement. "Sarah had mistakenly memorized the wrong politician's comments," said spokesman Tucker Bounds. But Palin was referring to the President's comments during a joint press conference with Afghani President Karzai where the President alluded to American bombing raids that had killed READ THE SHOCKING DETAILS OF PALIN'S CALL OUT OF BUSH RIGHT HERE. This was the year that satire has changed the politics forever. Let me say that again. Satire has changed the 2008 race and politics forever. I said it again because that's pretty much the title of my book - "How Satire Changed 2008 and Politics Forever" - that I should have finished on inaugural day 2009. Besides disqualifying me from moderating the next debate, it defines the foremost difference between this election and any other. Tina Fey, Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Bill Maher, Andy Borowitz, David Letterman. They've all played their part with immense help from the candidates. But no one of them is more amusing than Fox's top clown, Bill O'Reilly. Just hearing him say how objective he is. How he has no horse in this race. How it's those (other) conservative talkers are the liars. Funny stuff. But this week he dealt out a sketch that would have had Saturday Night Live writers green with absurdist jealousy, finding pure Factor comedy magic as at the same time Bill made sure that the microscopic, last iota of any credibility that might have hidden somewhere under his immense ego and incivility, surely and embarrassingly, left the building. And he did it with side-splitting panache. Abbott and Costello were sent spinning in their READ THE REST OF THE HILARITY RIGHT HERE Award-winning TV writer, steve young, is author of "Great Failures of the Extremely Successful" (www.greatfailure.com) and blogs at the appropriately named ste ... "If you're gonna run a town, it's better to be perky than smart." Mayberry Sheriff Andy Taylor* I know the liberal mainstream media will try to spin the vice presidential debate as a win for Joe Biden, but that's because they continue to be out of touch with what the folks really care about. Perk. It wasn't simply that Biden wasn't perky enough, but the guy just doesn't understand the plain folks. Not once did he punctuate a point with a snappy wink. The folks like a politician who knows how to wink to show they're right there with you. My only problem with Sarah was that he did not point and click at the same time. ] And Sarah was far more than perky. She was shrewd. Shrewd enough to know darn well than to answer the question that was asked. Biden felt he had to answer the actual questions, filling those answers with all kinds of endless specifics. If he gave one more detail to explain how he and Obama plan to change the horrific direction under Bush and that it seems McCain wants to continue, I swear I would have crawled through the TV machine and strangled him. Sarah correctly pointed out that Biden kept looking back instead of forward.
