Live at Shea stadium isn't just a great live album, it's one that is worthy of the group once deemed the only band that matters. It's no mistake that the Clash were once called the only band that matters. As the seventies were drawing to a close, and rock music was imploding onto itself from virtually all sides, the Clash were looked to by many as the band that was going to save rock and roll from itself. They were loud, they were aggressive, but they also played really well... ...

By Andrew Liszewski I remember in my high school chemistry class whenever an experiment required an exact amount of time the teacher would break out the stopwatches which would inevitably lead to an unofficial game of who could start and stop them the fastest. Since last year we recognized the Mighty Mites, this year we’re searching for “Big guys with wheels.” Think of football as a game of collision tag or bumper cars at the amusement park. When you do, this old gridiron axiom rings true: ‘Big fast guys beat fast little guys.’ But coaches are quick to share that big boys who can run are in short supply. Please trust me when I relate an experience from 31 years ago. Imagine standing at the bottom of a hill, straddling railroad tracks, with your arms stretched out wide (you might prefer to close your eyes!). Now here comes a run-away train speeding toward you. You get the idea – Splat!! Well, that’s what it felt like attempting to tackle future Pro Football Hall of Famer Mike Munchak , out of what used to be Scranton Central High School. He was a real-life physics experiment at 6-foot-4, 245 pounds, a fullback turned guard, who later starred at Penn State before being selected in the first round. Footwork isn’t glamorous and it’s never mentioned when talk-radio hosts gab for hours about gridiron success. But people who really know football will tell you how important footwork is. If a big guy can run and he’s willing to work hard, do his homework and keep his nose clean, then he has a chance to be an outstanding player. Big guys with potential should consider enrolling at the Fred Astaire Dance School, but seriously they have to learn to move their feet. They can’t jump enough rope or r ...

Shooting from the Lip Compiled by Bruce Arthur “Trust me on this: Nobody from Saskatchewan would ever throw a can that still contained beer.” — Cam Hutchinson , of the Saskatoon StarPhoenix, after Saskatchewan Roughriders fans were accused of throwing beer, in cups and cans, at visiting B.C. Lions players during a game. “Then why are you covering the Nationals?” — Ralph Nader , fringe Presidential candidate, on what he told Washington Post editors during a meeting in which they said his campaign would not be covered because he has no chance of winning. “Ichiro was ready to defend himself, however — with about 200 slap hits.” — Ted Wyman of the Winnipeg Sun, on a report that some Seattle Mariners disliked Ichiro Suzuki , pictured, so much that they were planning to fight him. “[Corey] Maggette says he can’t believe his luck, having 24-hour access to a gym now that he’s a [Golden State] Warrior. The [Los Angeles] Clippers worked out at a health club where, after 1 p.m., the members had the court. Sometimes, Maggette says, the Clippers would play ball with the club members, just to get in some shooting in. My turn to pick? I got the guy with the ferocious basketball tattoo on his 18-inch bicep.” — Scott Ostler , of the San Francisco Chronicle, apparently in the middle of his fantasy basketball draft. “Basically, if your commercials air during golf tournaments, you’re done.” — Comedian Amy Poehler , on the financial crisis affecting f ...
