They're neither confirming nor denying reports that WiMax is up and running in some parts of town. In fact, they say, there won't be any new WiMax announcements until the Clearwire deal closes later this year. (Folks who understand all that can skip to the next paragraph. Others may appreciate this background-in-a-nutshell: Two companies, sprint and Clearwire, were building WiMax wireless networks that can provide DSL-like Internet speeds over huge areas. The expense of doing this convinced the two companies that they should team up, so sprint struck a deal to give its WiMax assets to Clearwire in exchange for stock. sprint's first WiMax city, Baltimore, came on line before the completion of the Clearwire deal. The next two, Washington and Chicago, should follow right after the deal. Another round of big cities, including Dallas, should follow after that.) Given that sprint announced its plans to build WiMax in Dallas more than a year ago, it should hardly come as a surprise that the company has a fair amount of equipment in place around here. It also makes sense that the company would be testing it in the easiest possible way: by flipping it on and seeing what happens. Initially, sprint had hoped to have WiMax up and running in Dallas before the end of this year, but it has fallen so far behind in Baltimore, Washington and Chicago that we probably won't see official WiMax here anytime before the middle of next year. How can regu ...

Filed under: Multimedia , sprint A great feature -- or, at least we thought it was a great feature -- of mobile music stores is that you're not eternally shackled to listening to the track on your crappy little handset. Buying and listening to music on the road is all well and good, and admittedly, it's probably the typical mode of operation -- but when you get home, it's nice to have your dollar-each tracks available for download on the desktop. sprint wants to move away from that model, though, announcing that tracks purchased in its Music Store will skip PCs altogether in favor of a phone-only model starting October 15; you'll still be able to back up tracks to your computer, but they'll only play on the phone. That's awesome, totally logical, and a surefire way for sprint to turn a profit on its music service when competitors are offering DRM-free tracks that can play anywhere you damn well please for the same 99 cents sprint's charging. Something tells us this won't last long -- sprint will either relent, outsource its music biz to a more capable third party, or stop offering music directly altogether. Or so we hope.
