If you think someone is watching you, you're probably right. But this doesn't mean you're not also crazy, according to psychiatrists who say that our surveillance and reality TV society is spawning a new kind of psychosis. They're calling it the Truman Show delusion . Psychiatrists in the U.S. and Britain say they're seeing a growing number of psychotic patients who are paranoid that cameras are watching their every move . Not sure why they might think this . Others fear the World Wide Web is monitoring their lives or being used to transmit photographs or personal information. The psychiatrists say such patients are often mirroring -- albeit, to an extreme -- what is occurring in the environment around them. One way of looking at the delusions and hallucinations of the mentally ill is that they represent extreme cases of what the general population, or the merely neurotic, are worried about. Schizophrenics and other paranoid patients can take common fears - like identity theft because of information transmitted on the Internet, or the loss of privacy because of the prevalence of security cameras to fight crime - and magnify them, psychiatrists say. Which would seem to suggest that these patients might not be so delusional after all. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders defines a delusion, considered still to be little understood in psychiatry, as, essentially, a false belief that is not grounded in reality an ...

A free society would be one where the recognition of property rights and the freedom of contract are considered as the primary basis for the interaction between its members. However, the existence of the state assures that there will almost always be a disconnect between custom and state legislation. The video below gives us a glimpse of just one of many such disconnects. The newscasters, recognizing the silliness of what had happened, are laughing at the incident. They would not, however, would be doing so had the police officer had raped or killed. Surely they realize that smoking marijuana, or eating it in this case, did not lead to harmful effects. And even if they did support the war on drugs, they must know that at it's not "as criminal" as a crime with a real victim (Of course, the crime here was perpetrated by the police, who stole the marijuana initially). ...

Researchers have uncovered new evidence to support the controversial theory that parts of the Amazon were home to dense "urban" settlements prior to the arrival of Europeans in the 15th century. The study is published this Friday in the journal Science . Conducting archeological excavations and aerial imagery across a number of sites in the Upper Xingu region of the Brazilian Amazon, a team of researchers led by Michael Heckenberger found evidence of a grid-like pattern of 150-acre towns and smaller villages, connected by complex road networks and arranged around large plazas where public rituals would take place. The authors argue that the discoveries indicate parts of the Amazon supported "urban" societies based around agriculture, forest management, and fish farming. ...

The North River Arts society hopes to renovate the building known to residents as the 1912 Firehouse to create bright, heated  classrooms for children’s programs. The project would be the first step in a long-awaited $1 million revitalization of the society’s headquarters in Marshfield Hills, which includes the firehouse and former Grand Army of the Republic Hall next door. So far, the society has raised more than $100,000 towards the firehouse revitalization project. The estimated cost is $250,000. “We have a long way to go,” said Elizabeth Welch, a member of the society’s board of directors and cochair of the project. To help pay for the revitalization, the society is kicking off a month-long fundraiser, “artsOn!”, this week. There will be an exhibit, studio tours, dinner parties with artists, a silent auction and displays in Webster Square. The exhibit will include the work of more than 20 artists whose careers have developed or flourished through the society. Each piece will include a quotation on what the organization means to the artist. Organizers hope the programs will help introduce South Shore residents to the membership and activities of the society, which has been based at the firehouse and former GAR hall since 1978. “We wanted to show what North River Arts society is,” Welch said. “It allows people to really understand what we are doing now and what we can do when we have the new facilities.” For the past 30 years, s ...
