Washington has a new chief economist. Arun Raha, who was the vice president for economic research and consulting for risk management firm Swiss Re, is the new executive director of the state Economic and Revenue Forecast Council, the state announced today. "We couldn't have made a better choice," said state Rep. Jim McIntire, D-Seattle, who chairs the sate forecast council. "Dr. Raha's strong track record and his expertise in global economics and forecasting are a great fit for this very important position, especially at this turbulent time." Raha replaces ChangMook Sohn, who stepped down in March to run for state treasurer. Raha has a doctorate in economics from Washington State University and was a faculty member at Boise State University, where he forecast Idaho State General Fund Revenues for the state legislature. Prior to working at Swiss Re, Raha also managed economic analysis at the Eaton Corpration, where he served on the Ohio Governor's Council of Economic Advisors. He is also a former trustee of the Automotive Markest Research Council and is on the Wall Street Journal's Economic Forecasting Panel. "I am excited that we were able to find someone of Arun's caliber. He exemplifies the kind of integrity and objectivity vital to this position," said Victor Moore, a member of the Forecast Council and director of the state Office of Financial Management. ... Marion High School choir director Armetta Beltz put to rest worries of cancelled events with a switch of vocal music directors this year. The performance schedule for 2008-2009 includes traditions such as the madrigal dinner in December and spring musical in March. "The tradition here is too special," Beltz said. "The kids are fabulous to be around and are being very mature. They're easy to work with. They have a sound out of this world." Other performances include the veterans parade this Saturday, Quad-State Festival in November, Illinois Music Educators Association and Illinois High School Association competitions and spring and fall concerts. In the spring, MHS choir director Elizabeth Shore was transferred to the junior high by Unit 2 administration, a move which prompted protests from high school choir supporters. The Wake County Board of Commissioners Tuesday approved the appointment of Marcus Kinrade as director of the Wake County Revenue Department. The County began recruiting for a new Revenue director in July 2008, following the retirement of the previous director, and recently selected Kinrade for the position. He will begin serving in his new capacity immediately. Kinrade has served as Appraisal/Collection Manager for the Wake County Revenue Department since 2002. This position required management of staff and business processes in a cross-functional tax office, responsible for 60,000 business and personal property accounts and 750,000 motor vehicle accounts. Kinrade most recently coordinated the move of the Revenue Department to the Bank of America building in downtown Raleigh. He received the Ralph W. Ketner Productivity Award in 2003 for his work with Wake County's online business listing system. "Marcus has done an excellent job as Appraisal and Collection Manager," said Board of Commissioners Chair Joe Bryan. "He has a proven record of leadership in Wake County and a keen understanding of what it takes to run a leading Revenue Department. The Board of Commissioners is very pleased to appoint Marcus as our new Revenue director." "I am humbled by this tremendous opportunity," said Kinrade. Now, on the matter of Form: It's the label designed by Project Runway season five's first castoff, Jerry Tam . (We don't know about you, but the serial-killer costume that earned him the boot is still as fresh in our minds as our three-day-weekend hangover.) Tam and Subkoff got to know each other when Tam interned for Subkoff at Imitation of Christ . "I had no idea that [Jerry] would have so much respect for me that he would bring me on board! It's so great to be able to support one of my first interns at such a crucial time. Feels karmic and cosmic," Subkoff says in a press release. It is a surprising pairing to us, too.
