Chancellor of the exchequer Alistair Darling has rejected a call to temporarily suspend the Bank of England's independence over monetary policy. Liberal Democrat treasury spokesman Vince Cable called at the weekend for Mr Darling to "clear the road" for large interest rate cuts by suspending the remit for the monetary policy committee (MPC) to keep the consumer prices index rate of inflation at or near two per cent. However, Mr Darling rejected this, stating: "That remit was designed to deal with difficult times as well as the good times." Mr Cable's call came at the start of a week in which the MPC will meet to discuss whether to cut the base rate. An Adfero poll last week found that seven out of the 12 experts quizzed expected the rate to be lowered. The last interest rate cut was in April.
