Filed under: Storage Sans Digital caught our eyes earlier this month with a simple, albeit remarkably nifty CF to SATA adapter , and now it's doing so again with a 2-bay NAS enclosure. The AccuNAS AN2L is a RAID 0/1 chassis that supports file sharing in Windows, OS X and Linux, and it also enables playback of files via a PS3 / Xbox 360 or any other UPnP / DLNA-certified device. You'll also find that this thing doubles triples as an iTunes music server and BitTorrent client, which makes it all the more tempting, does it not? No word on pricing at the moment, but if you're strangely uncomfortable with loading in your own HDDs, the outfit will be selling these with 500GB to 2TB pre-installed for an undisclosed premium. BSkyB is to break into the digital music market with a new business, launched in conjunction with Universal Music, that aims to take on Apple's iTunes in the UK. The new as-yet-unnamed venture, in which BSkyB is the majority shareholder and Universal is an equity partner, aims to launch by the end of the year. The service, which is likely to be Sky branded, will offer a monthly subscription service as a counter to iTunes track-by-track purchasing. The subscription will give users unlimited access to streamed tracks plus a set number of download-to-own songs, initially to Universal Music's catalogue of hundreds of thousands of songs from artists including Amy Winehouse, U2, Kanye West, Duffy, Rihanna, Eminem, Elton John and Abba. Downloaded tracks will work on any device that can play MP3s including iPods and mobile phones. BSkyB, which several years ago registered the brand name Sky Tunes, is in negotiations with other music companies to join the venture and to potentially take equity. pricing of the subscription packages, and the numbers of tracks that will be made available to download for each tier, will be revealed closer to the time of launch. "We think that there is a considerable un-met and untapped demand in the digital music market," said the BSkyB chief operating officer, Mike Darcey. "There is a desire among consumers to consumer, discover and purchase music online." He added that not all those needs were met by the cur ...

When the iPhone 3G hits July 11th, it will be available at both AT&T and Apple stores. So beyond a little extra pretentiousness at the Apple stores, is there anything different between them? What if you need to start a new plan? What if you need to transfer a number? Can Apple handle the complicated stuff? Actually, AT&T has told us that there will be no limiting difference between the two stores , except one thing. If you are a business or enterprise customer, then you should buy your iPhone from AT&T. Here are the full details on business scenarios: For those business, or enterprise customers, they will get their iPhone 3Gs through their normal IT processes. This will ensure that their business can take advantage of any corporate discounts that may apply. Activation will work [one of two] ways: — If your company pays the bill for your iPhone 3G: Your IT department will provide you with iPhone 3G, just as it does any other device. Then, all you need to do is sync it to iTunes from your computer and it will be good to go. You do not need to go to an AT&T retail store. — If you pay the bill and are reimbursed for it by your company: Buy the iPhone in an AT&T retail store. Give the salesperson your company's contract number with AT&T and the device will be activated. And if you're still wondering about details like pricing, be sure to hit up the FAQ . ...

Just a few weeks ago, Apple launched the iPhone 3G and application store on iTunes . Both have proven wild successes for consumers, but how have developers been feeling? MTV Multiplayer recently spoke with Publisher X founder Doug Kennedy and Phantom EFX president Jim Thompson about their experiences working with Apple to help support the company’s newly developed gaming platform. The application store has raised many questions. Should there be a standardized pricing model? Does Apple need to institute a quality standard for applications? “When the application store launched, it was a learning process not only for us as a publisher and a developer, but for everyone that works on the application store and learning what’s things are going to work and what things aren’t going to work,” said Kennedy. “We’re looking at this as a marathon, not as a sprint out of the gates.” “We’re looking at this as a marathon, not as a sprint out of the gates.” That sounds a little like the argument made for casual games like “Boom Blox.” Publisher X’s casino games aren’t the only games of that type on the application store, either. “MotionX Poker” has proven a breakout hit. In response, Publisher X will lower the price to just $.99 for a week in early August. “How do you weed through hundreds, if not thousands, of games six months down the road and finally the ones that are cream of the crop?” Kennedy said. “With DS and PSP, there’s an approval proces ...

Instead of going head-to-head against the world's leading digital music distributor , RealNetworks ' Rhapsody has taken the more subtle approach in competing against Apple's iTunes - by embracing the iPod's MP3 format. Rhapsody advertises itself under the slogan "Music Without Limits". This current strategy ties in with its different partners - iLike, Yahoo!, MTV Networks, and Verizon Wireless - to help connect consumers with digital music wherever they are and however they want it. Boasting a selection of over 5 million songs from major music labels, such as Universal Music Group, Sony BMG Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group, and EMI, the Rhapsody MP3 Store offers tracks for US 0.99 a pop and most albums for US 9.99. Since music purchased off the MP3 store is unshackled by any Digital Rights Management ( DRM ) software, any tracks and albums bought from it can be seamlessly downloaded into Rhapsody, RealPlayer or iTunes. It has yet to be seen whether this strategy will indeed reflect a pointed growth for the company. Analyst David Card of Jupiter Research described Rhapsody's new tact into the digital music distribution business quite appropriately by saying: "I think we'll see retailers begin to compete the way they usually compete with pricing, merchandising and promotions, rather than due to some arbitrary technology". ...

Apple has canceled its plans to lower the price of songs on the iTunes Store in the United Kingdom due to exchange rate changes. In January, Apple said it would lower the prices it charges for music on its UK iTunes Store to match the already standardized pricing on iTunes across Europe within six months. Songs cost 79p in the UK and 0.99 euros elsewhere in Europe; at the time of the announcement, that was equal to only 74p. Since then, however, the… ...

Seth Gilbert submits: With iTunes, buying music has always been easy. Apple (AAPL) insured that with a clear pricing structure. They enforced it through aggressive negotiations with music labels and video producers. Buying the new iPhone won’t quite be as easy. The 3G phone is due in a blink, 8am on July 11th. In anticipation, global carrier partners have been rapidly revealing their pricing plans and service agreement requirements. While the 8Gb model is likely to stay near the projected maximum unit price of $199 as Steve Jobs promised in his Developers Conference Keynote, service offerings and subsidies are set to vary widely. The details will be in the fine print. A QUICK GLOBAL SURVEY OF CARRIER PLANS Complete Story » ...

If you are snickering here, wait...Playboy ( NYSE: PLA ) CEO Christie Hefner is "blogging" for Portfolio.com about the future of newspapers and gives her deep-thought opinion on what they should be focusing on. She talks about a code worth cracking: "rather than seemingly focusing on cost-cutting their way out of their problems, perhaps newspaper owners should be focused on first, how to make their online content and the online experience on their sites as compelling as possible, including (buckle your seat belts here!) marketing their sites; second, how to consider offering some of that content or some of those experiences in a disaggregated (i.e., not needing a subscription) manner with simple a la carte pricing—the iTunes model..." Which is all fine of course, and everyone's trying. but then this: "So can newspapers learn from magazines? From what Condé Nast's done online? From Playboy's ability to grow its combined print and online audience and advertising last year?" What growth is she talking about? Playboy's digital revenues have been flat to shrinking over the last few quarters, and the growth even before has been slower than industry average. But to be fair, Playboy was among the earliest movers in the online and mobile space and went international with its mobile business earlier than anyone. Even on the interactive TV and VOD site, it was early. It certainly has the right digital execs. But it hasn't been able to capit ...
