Sony went Apple-crazy today with three new products with iPod/iPhone docks. And remember that we complained just last week that Microsoft’s Zune has an edge over Apple’s iPod with a Tagging feature for songs played over the FM radio receiver? That is still the case, but Sony has come up with a fancy new HD radio that allows iPod/iPhone users to tag songs for to download them from iTunes later. ...

Latest Zune firmware, software allows Wi-Fi music purchases, FM Tagging: Microsoft confirmed the 16-Sept-2008 release of new Zune firmware and players, allowing users of old and new devices alike to purchase music over Wi-Fi from the Zune Marketplace. The new firmware also sports FM Tagging that uses information that some broadcasters will embed in their analog programming to tag songs for immediate purchase (single track) or download (Zune Pass subscription) over a Wi-Fi hotspot, or to queue for later download. Apple added access for iPhone and iPod touch users to a subset of its iTunes Store over Wi-Fi--the awkwardly named iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store--more than a year ago, along with the ability to access that store at no cost from handhelds and laptops via Starbucks outlets in New York, Seattle, and throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. (Chicago and Los Angeles have been "coming soon" for a year, but the new AT&T/Starbucks deal may have delayed opening up those markets.) Terrestrial AM/FM radio stations would like to figure out how to remain meaningful in a world of streaming Internet radio. Their latest strategy is to embed information that allows a listener to mark a song they want, potentially getting a piece of music sold in this fashion. With FM Tagging, Zune players tap into an existing very low-data-rate encoding protocols that allow stations to push out their call letters and current song information. By adding a very short co ...

Digital music is all well and good, but who wants to type in album and artist information for each track? With TagScanner , you don't have to. This efficient and powerful tag editor lets you edit metadata automatically as well as by hand, both for individual files and file batches. The automatic Tagging feature is most impressive. Although it can hit up online databases such as FreeDB, Discogs, and Amazon like many other auto-Tagging apps, it can also generate tags from file and folder names--that's something many similar apps can't do. It works in the opposite direction, too, generating file names from tags. The app supports ID3v1, ID3v2, Vorbis comments, APEv2, WindowsMedia, and MP4/iTunes tags. TagScanner has an elegant and orderly interface, and lets you preview file names before applying changes. The only catch is that you'll need to spend some time learning the program's file- and tag-naming language. However, if you have thousands of music tracks crying out for organization, that's a small price to pay. ...

Filed under: Misc. Gadgets , Wireless The Alcatel-Lucent-backed Tikitag sure has managed to keep a low profile until now, but it looks to have made quite a splash at the DemoFall conference this week, where it showed off its RFID Tagging system that's apparently set to go into public beta in less than a month. The system, which Tikitag confidently boasts will "build the internet of things," promises to let you add an RFID tag to anything you like and associate it with a webpage or application -- for instance, a business card that links to page with all your social networking information or, less usefully, a cube that you can use to control iTunes. Intrigued? You'll apparently be able to pick up the Tikitag reader and ten tikitags for $50 on October 1st, with boxes of 25 tikitags also available for those looking to get a little more ambitious. The Zune 3.0 update went live today and with it, news that users will have free WiFi access at more than 9,800 McDonald's via a deal with Wayport. Insert obvious comparisons to Apple's ( NSDQ: AAPL ) iTunes deal with Starbucks here. As is the case with that arrangement, much of the success will have to do with ubiquity and ease of use. So far, I can't get the new update to connect with my home network wirelessly so who knows? Microsoft ( NSDQ: MSFT ) preempted Apple last week with hardware and software news about the Zune. The major features of the software update—good for all three generations of Zune—rely on wireless or are enhanced by it: wireless streaming and downloading from the Zune Marketplace, Tagging songs on FM radio and purchasing.  New recommendations and programming tech have been added as well, the Marketplace has been enhanced and content from Audible ( NSDQ: ADBL ) works now, too. The iTunes App Store is becoming a trendsetter for other companies in the mobile market. With a thousands of apps to choose from with over 60 million downloads total , what more could you ask for? Apparently a lot. Users still aren't satisfied with the offerings nor the apps that Apple is choosing to not let into the App Store. Apps that are extending the functionality of some of Apple's standard offerings are being denied their chance to shine. This has resulted in a small, but talented pool of developers finding other ways to promote their apps to iPhone users. Enter a method known as "jailbreaking". Jailbreaking your iPhone voids your warranty, but allows you access to some of the most incredible apps that won't be coming to the App Store anytime soon. Here's a look at our top 10 picks of apps worth jailbreaking your iPhone to get. Pushr There just aren't enough dedicated Flickr apps in the iTunes App Store. To add injury to insult, the majority of dedicated Flickr apps don't allow you to upload Flickr photos from your iPhone. In steps Pushr to fill this void! Pushr allows you to select a photo and edit a lot of the standard Flickr options. Users can edit the name, description, tags, and privacy options before uploading it their Flickr account. We're huge fans of its Tagging feature because it pulls from the list of previously used tags for better convenience. Pushr also allows you to upload multiple photos at a time, which bea ...

I came up with the following method of 'Tagging' tracks in iTunes using Quicksilver -- Quick Tag was a good app for this kind of thing, but it doesn't work with iTunes 7.7.1, and it's nice to not have to download another application when Quicksilver can handle part of its functionality. Open Script Editor (in Applications » Utilities), and paste the code below into a new script: property tag_prefix : "<" property tag_suffix : ">" using terms from application "Quicksilver" on process text txt set txt_items to my itemize(txt, " ") set tags to my wrap(txt_items) tell application "iTunes" set t to current track set g to t's grouping if g ≠ "" then ... ...
