Section: Apple , Computers , Software / Applications , Gaming , Games , Reviews What is it? SnapWords is a game by Magnetism Studios that is meant to be played by lots of people.  It’s kind of like Taboo or Password.  Get a word on the game and try to get someone on your team to guess the word.  When your turn is over, hand your iPhone or iPod touch to the other team for their turn.  The Good: At $0.99, this is a bargain.  An official Taboo board game from Hasbro can run you $20.  SnapWords has a library of 10,000 words, timer, and score keeper all in one application.  A simple, but cool, feature is the ability to edit your score if you accidentally pressed the wrong button while playing.  The Bad: This is not a game you should play on the bus or a train unless you’re a big fan of annoying everyone around you.  There is no support for custom word packs, but this feature may be available in future editions of the game according to the guys at Magnetism Studios The Crux: If you’re a fan of party games, this is a fun little application.  I know it could be pretty useful while waiting for a table at a restaurant.  The lack of board game clutter is another plus - no parts to lose.  iTunes Link: [ SnapWords ] Company Site: [ Magnetism Studios ] Full Story » | Written by Iyaz Akhtar for Gadgetell . | Comment on this Article » ...

Filed under: Gaming , Odds and ends , Freeware , iPhone , App Store , iPod touch Normally we'd just send out a tweet about this (that's usually what we do with free app deals, so if you're not one of the almost 40,000 people following us yet, you definitely should be), but this is a good one, and it's a holiday, so we wanted to make sure you knew. Sega is feeling particularly generous this weekend, so they're giving away free copies of their Columns Deluxe , a port of the old Genesis game , for the iPhone. The game is a pretty straightforward port -- it doesn't have any extras, and the accelerometer controls are a little tacked on from what we hear, but if you like the puzzler gameplay of Columns , and you should, it's a fun one to pull up for a few minutes at a time. Plus, it's free -- from July 3rd to Monday, July 6th, Sega says it'll be on sale for the low price of nothing at all. Sounds good to us -- sit back, put a few brats and burgers on the grill, grab a Corona (and lime, of course), and enjoy some old-school dropping block gameplay for no money at all. The iPhone 3GS jailbreaking app Purplera1n is here, reports CNET. Teenage hacker Geroge Hotz, who was first unlocked the iPhone, released Purplera1n yesterday in a blog post titled " I make it ra1n. " Technicallly, this is bad news for AT&T and Apple -- for AT&T (T), since people can use their jailbroken on any phone service, and for Apple (AAPL) because users won't have to go to the app store to buy add new ones to their jailbroken phones. Right, so bear with me here: this week our apps are all about learning new things, understanding the world around you, meeting new people, playing extremely silly games in large groups. Sort of like being a kid again! No? Ok. Pocket Universe : It's a pinchy, zoomy, 3D star map for the iPhone and iPod Touch. For the iPhone 3GS, for which the new Pocket Universe is designed, you get full-on astronomical augmented reality. Using location services, accelerometer data and the 3GS's compass, Pocket Universe pseudo-overlays information about your stars, planets, constellations and general space things according to whatever you're pointing at. Three dollars. Loopt for iPod Touch : The Loopt iPhone app has been around as long as, well, iPhone apps . Since 2008, it's earned its keep as one of the only useful friend-locating apps. Just about every mobile platform has a client, with one notable exception: the iPod Touch. That, along with Of course, Loopt isn't quite the same without GPS, but Wi-Fi location will get you by in a bind. Still waiting for a proper 3.0 version though. Free. Seek 'n Spell : iPhone games tend to be a lot like games for any other portable device, and rarely leverage some of the traditionally non-gaming capabilities of the handset. Part of this is because, until recently, the developer SDK was sort of limited. Most of it, I think, is because developers just haven't been thinking hard enough. Take this clever, if obviou ...

Hey all. I'm new to iPhone development. I came up with an idea for an iPhone application and created an iPhone web app. However, I eventually want to make it into a native app. Unfortunately, this will take some time because I am currently unfamiliar with the SDK. Is it wise for me to release my web app before starting work on the native app? Is there any chance that someone will steal my idea and create the native app themself, or is that somehow protected against? Thanks for the help. Any input is very much appreciated. Sincerely, Ben ...
