I still think Andrew Sullivan is one of the best political bloggers out there. But I've become more critical of Sullivan recently for engaging in low brow attacks against John McCain, while crying foul when similar low brow attacks are made against Obama. Nonetheless, I've wondered recently if I was being too hard on Sullivan. Because, on the whole, he's still one of the very best voices in the blogosphere. But when Sullivan's own Atlantic colleague Ross Douthat compares Sullivan to largely discredited conspiracy theorist Jerome Corsi, there's really something there: Look, if Andrew thinks the possible "cross in the dirt" fabrication represents a fruitful line of anti-McCain inquiry, he has every right to pursue it. But given my colleague's steady appeals for a more high-minded approach to political argument, I think he should ponder whether this sort of thing might, just possibly, be part of the problem rather than part of the solution. In recent months, Sullivan's been fairly criticized/teased for his unfailing support of Barack Obama. On the whole, that's ok in my book, because we haven't seen Sullivan contradict his core principles of favoring restrained government and the importance of self-doubt in conservative, intellectual circles. It makes Sullivan all the more interesting as someone who thinks of himself as conservative, but in reality is a social liberal who wants a government with a limited cultural/economic footprint. But ...

Local business owner Wayne Fischer said attending the visitation for Rockford Marine Cpl. Adam McKiski was a profoundly sad experience, and that his heart goes out to the fallen soldier’s friends and family. Fischer said he’s a good friend of Adam McKiski’s father, Hal McKiski, a Rockford developer who has worked extensively in the Stephenson County area. Hal McKiski has served as developer on a variety of major area projects, such as the Windhaven Acres subdivision in Pearl City and Countryside Estates in Freeport, Fischer said. “It’s a tragedy,” said Fischer, who co-owns Fischer Excavating Ready Mix & Stone in Freeport with his brother, Joe. “Hal has always been a good friend and he’s taking this real hard.” Adam McKiski, 21, of Rockford died on Aug. 7, 2008, in a military vehicle accident outside Fallujah, Iraq, according to the Rockford Register Star. His visitation was held on Aug. 15, 2008, and Aug. 16, 2008, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Rockford. Adam was a three-year Marine on his second tour of duty in Iraq at the time of his death. His primary duty in the Marines was as a towed artillery systems technician until he volunteered for recovery missions in Iraq as a gunner. Wayne Fischer said he met Hal McKiski through his excavating business. He describes Hal as a friendly, generous person who is well-known in the area. “He’s the type of guy who would give you the shirt off his back,” Fischer said. Fischer said when he and ...

The Olympic Games may be in full swing these days, but they're not the only place to find intense sparring, emotional intrigue, and slack-jawed googly eyes. No, for all those fine elements (particularly the latter), we have The Hills , which made its triumphant, if arbitrary return for Season Four last night on MTV. I say arbitrary because I'm still wondering why the second half of season three was actually still considered season three when in fact the break between both halves of that season was longer than the break between seasons three and four. Oh well, it's all semantics anyway, and given that the show already has a dubious enough timeline as it is, we really shouldn't be at all surprised by MTV's bizarre choices in the labeling department. But look at me. I'm already babbling about something insignificant when in fact there is plenty more to discuss. The new season has yielded two new characters: Heidi's younger sister Holly and Lauren's new boy DOUG (pronounced like "UGH"). Both new faces have yet to do anything particularly regrettable — besides the unfortunate decision to make breakfast at the crack of 11:45 AM in the Speidi household — however, I'm sure we'll be seeing plenty of petty drama from them soon enough. For now though, we'll just have to rely on our old mainstays to create all the tension in the show. I'm talking, of course, about Audrina and Lo, who took some major steps forward in their quest to take major steps ...
