Around 700 walkers and thousands of spectators are expected to walk against cancer Friday night at the fourth annual Hornell relay for Life. relay committee co-chairwoman Cindy Berry is pleased with this year’s fundraising progress, hoping to reach the $85,000 goal. “We’re at about $60,000,” she said. “We’re what, $25,000 away (from the goal).” In 2007, the relay committee planned to raise $80,000, but by the end of the relay, the event had raised $109,000 for cancer research and supporting cancer patients. And participation numbers are looking OK as well. “We have 32 teams online, and four or five that are just out there,” Berry said. “We have a lot of new faces.” There were 660 walkers registered on the Hornell relay’s Web site as of this morning, but Berry said there are dozens who are not on the site. While participation and fundraising might not be up to last year’s levels, there are several additions to this year’s event, which should help bring in more cash for the American Cancer Society, Berry said. Starting at 9 p.m., hairdressers from the Be-Bop Hair Shop will cut long hair for Locks of Love, which produces wigs for chemotherapy patients.
