Syble Latta and her bridal boutique, Poffie Girls, have lasted through four recessions. Each time, she said, sales suffered at her Gastonia shop as brides opted for cheaper dresses. Sales also plummeted after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Brides who in the past may have paid $1,200 for a wedding gown opted for dresses that cost an average of $750. Now, as the economy flirts with a recession, sales are the strongest Latta's seen during the boutique's 35-year history. They're up 25 percent over this same time last year. "I don't know why," she said. Brides are spending an average $1,500 to $3,000 per dress, such as the three Enzoani designer gowns Latta sold Saturday. "I'm not seeing that people are worried about the economy like I have through some of the other recessions," she said, noting shoppers appreciate the rich silk, craftsmanship and superior fit of the couture frocks. There is one area where brides are being more budget conscious, Latta said: Picking out bridesmaid dresses, usually paid for by the bride's friends. "There's so many people in different situations," Latta said. "Some people are pregnant, or are getting married themselves. The brides seem to be a little more considerate." All is not bliss for the boutique off New Hope Road, however. Shipping costs are "out of sight" for the store, up probably 20 percent, Latta said. The cost of my store-brand loaf of wheat bread has gone up 50 cents to $1.79. With milk rising to more than $4.00 a gallon, milk and bread cost me almost $6.00. I have a growing son, a teenager, in my house. My weekly grocery bill is more than $90. It used to be $65. Meat seems to be holding steady. I am drinking more water -- from the tap. Gas prices are ridiculous. Soon a gallon of regular will be $4.00 or more. The summer vacation has been canceled. Can't afford to drive to North Carolina to see family and friends. I can't afford to fly because the airlines prices are rising to cover fuel costs. I would have to pay for at least three seats, if not four, depending if my daughter in college comes home for the summer. And if my daughter comes home for the summer, the grocery bill will rise even more. I am coming to work drenched in sweat because, to save gas, I am not running the car air conditioner. To save on the electric bill, we have not turned on the house air conditioning. I have bundled every utility service possible. Cable, telephone, Internet all linked. If you know my cell phone number, please don't text message me. It costs additional money and I don't know how it works anyway. I'm Old School, remember. What are you doing to keep your budget in the black or to save money? Holler back. ... Source: business-times.asiaone.com --- 7 hours ago
