Yahoo has acquired the assets of the Inquisitor 3 plug-in for the Safari web browser . Mac developer Dave Watanabe created the plug-in, but will not become a Yahoo! employee. Watanabe will, however, temporarily consult for Yahoo. Inquisitor 3 aids searchers by auto-completing their search keywords and delivers results directly in the Safari browser. When users begin to type in the chrome (you know, that area where the toolbars and menus are), websites and alternative search terms pop up to assist the searcher. Yahoo says the plug-in is similar to their Search Assist -type function, but within the chrome. ...

For the uninitiated, PicLens is a full screen visual browser of photos and videos. It's available for Firefox, Internet Explorer and Safari. It is a very fast, very slick, frankly awesome way to view visual assets on your computer. I'm not one to play fan boy of any technology, but Piclens is just too good. Here's their promo video: The progress loading of Google Image search results is really something. PicLens works with Flickr, Youtube and other photo and video sites. The beta (found here) lets you browse and view news, sports and photo assets. It's a great way to ...

I have notice that sometimes when I reload my blog page in Safari, the content appears without any of the style sheet formating. This often occurs immediately after I republish the entire site, but has also occurred when I initially load the page early in the day when there have been no changes to the blog. It is often solved by a simple reload, but sometimes not. Any thoughts? Also, perhaps I am missing documentation on this, but I notice that there is a photo widget in MT4 and wonder where it looks for the photos. Is it simply in the assets directory such that if I upload images there, they will appear in the photo widget if I have that set to appear on my page? ...

Her er den relevante CSS-kode: a { text-decoration: none; font-weight: normal; color: Red; } a#popup span{ text-decoration: none; display: none; clear: none; color: Red; } a#popup:hover span { position: absolute; text-decoration: none; display: block; font-weight: normal; color: black; left: 390px; top: 93px; height: 550px; width: 245px; background-image: url('/assets/images/page_column.jpg'); padding-top: 10px; padding-left: 15px; } ...

Today's announcement by Adobe of the Open Screen Project has been well covered in the blogosphere. What hasn't been well covered is the story-behind-the-story and that this is a major salvo in the hybrid application war. I've written before about the rich, internet application ( RIA ) space ( here , here and here for example) and the momentum being built behind the tools, approaches and delivery containers with content, data and functionality mashed up and delivered in a hybrid manner. As the world is increasingly connected and broadband/wireless speeds increase (and device types proliferate with internet connectivity), the demand for more and more functionality integrating the desktop and the internet is accelerating and the major vendors (and open source ones) are trying to figure out how to empower us to create and deliver new digital assets that customers will value and buy. What isn't discussed much is the now primarily covert 'war' underway between Adobe with Flash (and AIR , Media Player , et al), Microsoft with Silverlight , Apple with WebKit (though little has been intimated publicly on what they might do in the RIA space or how they might leverage the stealth Quicktime installs on Windows with iTunes and the recent Safari Windows release) and Mozilla's Prism. All are focused on how to provide a winning environment upon and within which content creators, developers and strategists can deliver ...

The cross browser DomReady event is a great feature in all the good JavaScript libs. Basically you use it where you'd normally use the window onLoad event, the only difference is that it doesn't wait for images and other large assets to load before firing. So when people are in a hurry or the page is just slow they don't get a lessened experience because your progressive enhancements haven't done their enhancing. Quite often you don't want to use a library, like when you're trying to make a simple standalone util. So here's a simple standalone cross browser DomReady script , tested in a few versions of IE, FF and Safari (should be fine in Opera). Here's how to use it in it's simplest form. WhenDomReady( function(){ alert('I\'m ready to go!') } ); Here's how to use currying, the second argument is the scope that the method is fired in and the rest of the arguments are passed to the method. WhenDomReady( fHandler, MyNamespace, 'init'); So this would call the function fHandler , when that function uses this it will refer to MyNamespace and it's one argument is a string containing init ...

Yesterday, Yahoo! announced that what was expected to be hundreds of layoffs will be rounded up to more than 1,000 jobs cut . Unfortunately, the writing has been on the wall for some time as several Yahoo! assets were underperforming. Yahoo Video fell 80 percent while traffic to rival YouTube grew by nine percent. Metacafe grew by 27 percent. Traffic on Yahoo! asset MyBlogLog, a social network for bloggers, has been declining since a poorly communicated move to Yahoo! IDs. Gmail seems to have an edge over Yahoo! Mail, which is a bit more clunky than it used to be and is largely unusable by Safari (a small, but still viable percentage of accounts). Not all the news is sour mind you. Yahoo! and AT&T are expanding their alliance . Yahoo! has cornered a big share of the $548 million market for online ad revenues for sports sites, says Forbes . And most people seem to like Flickr . Even their front page news is pretty good, even if you don’t use the search tool. These are just a few of the reasons I suspect people like the Silicon Valley Insider is calling for any ideas that might “help save” Yahoo! Part of the challenge isn’t technology as much as it is communication, inside and out. Outside, members of various assets call Yahoo! unresponsive. Inside, layoff rumors have been whispered about for some time. Even The New York Times called said the Tuesday conference call droning and jargon filled. Since the best communicati ...

You know you like the Google Reader’s river view and J-Key. So yeah, we got that now for Safari and FF. Pour another bowl of cereal and keep reading. Like the great engineers over at Google Reader, we’ve decided to pre-fetch some assets off screen, and mark them read only when they become [...] ...
