Last summer, Center for Disease Control officials quarrantined a man who’d flown from Atlanta to Prague via Paris, despite being ordered not to travel. CDC officials knew - though the man did not - that he was infected with XDR-TB - extensively drug resistant tuberculosis. For the first time in over forty years, the CDC used their authority to pull the man from a plane and put him into isolation in an Atlanta hospital. The story gained a flurry of media attention - including interviews with airline passengers furious that they’d been exposed to the disease. But it didn’t do very much to raise the profile of XDR-TB in the United States. James Nachtwey would like to change that. A celebrated war photographer honored in 2007 with a $100,000 TED Prize , Nachtwey has spent much of the past year photographing patients with XDR-TB in locations around the world. His work helps put a face on a dangerous, frightening, poorly-understood and fully preventable disease… and many possibly help stop XDR-TB from turning into a global pandemic. Tuberculosis is an extremely common bacterial disease - it spreads through the air and it’s quite pervasive. One third of the world’s population is infected with the TB bacillus, though only 5-10% of those people will develop the disease. (People with weakened immune systems, including AIDS sufferers, are at much higher risk to develop TB.) These cases of TB are usually treatable with drugs like rifampicin and i ... Mort Zuckerman, the chairman of Boston Properties whose months-long economic doomsdaying was vindicated this September with the demise of Wall Street, has put on his prognosticator of prognosticator hat yet again, this time in an appearance on Intelligent Investing with Steve Forbes . Here are some excerpts from the conversation (you can find the whole transcript here ): First off, Mr. Zuckerman thinks the $700 billion bailout sucks: I don't believe that they should be doing it that way. I think they should be taking an equity position....Now, if [bankers, et.al.] can take up that much money on the way up they should take whatever the cost is on the way down. And it is not, it is absolutely a joke to say that their salaries are going to be constrained or their parachutes, golden parachutes, are going to be restricted. Mort thinks John McCain blew a crazy good opportunity when he decided to support the bailout: If John McCain had wanted to win the election, he could have sat there at that debate and said, 'This is an outrage. We should not be bailing out the very people who got us into the trouble. If we do anything, we should buy equity into the companies so that we can participate and let the shareholders pay.' If he had said that he would win the election. Mort says the GM Building was a sweet deal, no matter what the critics say: We were able to buy the General Motors building at a price that was roughly 20% below what it woul ... Jocelyn Zuckerman's original idea was to send David Foster Wallace to the Oxford Food Symposium, an academic conference for wonky food historians. Mr. Wallace couldn't go because the thing was being held in September and thus interfered with his teaching schedule at Pomona College. Determined to get him into the pages of Gourmet , Ms. Zuckerman came back with another pitch-the Scotch Whiskey Festival—only to find out that Mr. Wallace didn't drink. So she suggested the Maine Lobster Festival. Mr. Wallace took the assignment. The first thing he did, Ms. Zuckerman said this afternoon from a hotel room in Berlin, was ask for an assistant to send him everything that Gourmet had ever published on the subject of lobsters. read more » ... In a Q&A with Mort Zuckerman, chairman of Boston Properties, Zuckerman said the $700 billion bailout was the wrong move to fix the financial crisis, and that people should buy equity in the failing financial companies instead. Zuckerman also said he was able to buy the General Motors building for $2.8 billion, a price about 20 percent lower than it would have been a year prior. He warned that credit constraints will put the country into a six- to 12-month recession, and economic activity will become even slower. ... Source: www.smartmobs.com --- 17 days ago

From the September issue: In the ego-driven world of New York City real estate, there was something almost superhuman about the restraint Mort Zuckerman, and his firm Boston Properties, exhibited throughout the liquidity-juiced buying boom of recent years. The perma-tanned media tycoon, his low-key partner Ed Linde and the other green eyeshades at Boston Properties watched placidly from the sidelines as moguls like Harry Macklowe and the folks over at Broadway Partners spent money like overindulged housewives with platinum cards. ...
