Yesterday I told you about the Ziff-Davis Virtual Tradeshow Webinar that I was participating in. Well, the webinar seemed to go really well. I heard there were over 1,000 folks who registered. WOW! I'm not sure how many actually tuned in, but 98 percent of the attendees stayed until the Q&A session. If you registered, but missed the webinar, you can still log back into the show at anytime over the next six months for on-demand viewing. The format was excellent -- exactly like a physical show -- and it worked flawlessly. In retrospect, the 12 minutes I had to give my presentation wasn't an adequate time to get to grips with any subject, let alone something as unknown (to most folks) as encryption, but I did get some pretty good feedback from people who listened in. It did get me thinking, though, that it might be worth the time and effort to to set up an online seminar on security. What do you think? Is that something you might be interested in? ...

I'll be giving a Ziff Davis webinar tonight on one of my specialties: encryption. In the webinar, which I've titled Encryption: Protecting the Data that Travels Outside Your Network , I'll be talking about both hard drive encryption and e-mail encryption. In many situations, sensitive notebook-borne data has to travel outside your perimeter. Hard drive encryption offers companies a way to keep this data secure in case of notebook loss or theft. E-mail is also a popular conduit through which often sensitive information flows between a company and its partners, remote employees, and customers. What factors should you consider when deploying either of these technologies, and what are your encryption options? To find out, join me tonight from 5 - 5:45 p.m. ET. Registration is open now. ...

Today was Jeff Green's last day at 1UP. It was...not a terribly easy day for anyone. I mean, hell, I had a rough day of it, and I've only been employed here for six months. I can't even imagine how some of the others who had been working closely with Jeff for a lot longer are feeling.... My history with Jeff goes back quite a bit more than since I was hired by 1UP, though. I shared this story during the mailbag segment that will be in next week's 1UP FM, but Jeff was actually the first person I ever talked to at Ziff Davis. Way back when I first started the Evil Avatar Radio podcast, I had just happened to nab a Computer Gaming World subscription and discovered how fucking brilliant the magazine was. Unlike most gaming mags I'd read -- and I read them religiously at this point in time -- this one was smart, funny, mature, and packed full of interesting and unique content that I wasn't finding in any other magazine or on the internet. Where the hell did this come from? In order to answer that question and spread my newfound love for CGW , I wrote Jeff an e-mail and asked him to appear for an interview in my young podcast. Thankfully, he decided to humor me -- I'm sure Jeff had never heard the podcast or heard of me, but apparently he was familiar enough with Evil Avatar to give me a shot. Or, perhaps more likely, he was just a nice enough guy to be willing to take the time for this interview from some annoying kid with a shitty Skype r ...

Jeff Green 'Goodbye Black Dragon' His final day might have been last Friday, but we thought it would be fun to share the touching (and amusing) goodbye video the 1UP crew put together for as a tribute to the man, the legend, Jeff Green. From the heartfelt memories of many of the folks from around the office to an elaborate breakdancing routine from Jeff himself -- it's really him, honest -- this video is our personalized send-off for someone we're all going to miss the hell out of around 1UP Manor. If you're curious what he's been up to in his first week away from Ziff Davis in almost two decades, you can check out Jeff's new blog . He's already written about his first Monday away from the office and his feelings on Burn After Reading , and we're sure there's plenty more to come. While we wait for the next piece of post-1UP brilliance from Jeff, check out this last picture he took at 1UP. After this, he took off in the helicopter and flew to Electronic Arts. Seriously! ...

There is a road, no simple highway, Between the dawn and the dark of night, And if you go no one may follow, That path is for your steps alone. -"Ripple," The Grateful Dead "A relationship, I think, is like a shark. You know, it has to constantly move forward or it dies. And I think what we got on our hands is a dead shark." --Alvy Singer (Woody Allen), "Annie Hall" Well, now. So here we are. And here I am. 17 years at Ziff Davis, the last guy still here from the day I started, finally hanging it up and heading for the exit. For some of you, I know, this is a shock, but for me, as I ponder it many days after the decision was finally made, the greater shock may be that I actually was here for this long. Because, really, who does this anymore? Who stays with the same company for coming up on two decades? I guess the answer is: Guys like me, who found a place where he could learn and grow and thrive and have a pretty damn lucky time of it, when all is said and done. When I took my first job  at age 29 with Ziff at the now-defunct Ziff Davis Press, the computer book publishing division that came up with such winning products as "Can Do DOS," a book that was rolled up and sold in an aluminum can like tennis balls (no, I'm not kidding), I had no idea--and would have been horrified to know, I'm sure--that I'd still be with the company at age 46. Not one person I met at that time, or any time since, is still at Ziff from that day I started. Zi ...

So last friday we had a major going away party for Jeff -- probably the most epic one we've ever had for a leaving member of the team. After all, it's not every day you say goodbye to someone who's had such an amazing career with the company, such an impact on our organization and the games media as a whole, and such a good friend to everyone on the team. Especially when that person has such an awesome opportunity ahead of him. Anyway, after a staff meeting in the afternoon where we got to give him a good roast in the form of a goodbye video we all went down to our favorite watering hole and the celebration continued. And continued. And continued... The intention was to make Jeff do a shot for every year he worked at Ziff Davis (17). I don't think we even got close, but with all the drinks that were flowing too, I don't know how he (or anyone else) made it through the night. I snapped some photos of the evening...normally I'd post captions, but the whole night is such a blur that I don't really remember what was going on.         Let's see EA party like that .   ...
