Fans of actor-director Tom McCarthy's highly praised debut, THE STATION AGENT, will not be disappointed by his second film, a gentle drama about illegal immigration. At 62, Walter Vale (Richard Jenkins) is sleepwalking through his quiet life as an economics professor in Connecticut. A conference for work forces him to return to New York City, where he finds something unexpected in his nearly forgotten Manhattan apartment: a Pair of illegal immigrants is renting his place from a dishonest man, and they're just as shocked by his presence as he is by theirs. But Walter's kindness prevails, and he allows Syrian immigrant Tarek (Haaz Sleiman) and his Senegalese love Zainab (Danai Gurira) to stay. Tarek and Walter form an unlikely bond over Tarek's talent for playing the djembe drum, and soon Walter is spending his spare time with the couple. When Tarek is unjustly arrested, deportation hangs over the Young man's head and Walter is determined to help. The arrival of Tarek's mother (Hiam Abbass) adds another element to the trouble, but she provides unexpected companionship for Walter as he crusades for her son's freedom. THE STATION AGENT was a pleasant surprise for everyone who saw it, and while THE VISITOR revisits some of the same themes (particularly loneliness), it doesn't feel like a retread. In his first two films as writer and director, McCarthy has displayed an impressive touch with both quietly funny dialogue and complex characters ... Source: www.washingtonpost.com --- 4 days ago

Photo by David Hill Well, that just sucks. The Carnegie Mellon University chapter of Students for Barack Obama have been forced to cancel an event in Pittsburgh this Saturday (October 4), the very same event Obama supporters Vampire Weekend were scheduled to play . With no Young politicos to serenade with their arsenal of toe-tappers, the band will steer clear of Pittsburgh over the weekend, making their next show an appearance at the Iceland Airwaves Festival in Reykjavik later this month. Still, the boys of Vampire Weekend urge one and all to make sure they're properly registered and ready to go for November 4, especially since registration deadlines are coming up fast all over the place. In a post on the band's MySpace blog, somebody notes "I had an unpleasant and Kafkaesque (no, really!) experience during the primaries due to my failure to check on my status." Sounds like a great idea for a song, doesn't it? Vampire Weekend's throwdown for the Illinois Senator might not be going forth, but that don't stop the Ba-rock this weekend and beyond. Bruce Springsteen's doing a few shows for Obama , Jay-Z's doing a Pair , indie rockers aplenty are teaming up in Brooklyn next week , My Morning Jacket's Jim James hits Chicago October 8 , and the National and the Breeders will make some noise -- though not as much as this lot -- for the candidate in Cincinnati later this month. read more ...

"Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist" follows a couple of teenagers through a sleepless night of wine, women and a lot of songs. This is all played out against a musical soundtrack that becomes the biggest connection for the Pair. In honor of that musical medley, here is the "Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist Review Playlist." "The Rubberband Man," The Spinners: "Arrested Development grad Michael Cera plays Nick. He's a rather shy, geeky Young Young man who has bad luck with romance. It's the same role he played in "Superbad," "Juno" and "Arrested Development." Cera needs to stop bouncing back to this familiar one-note role. For indie fans, Ed Harris directs and stars in "Appaloosa," a Western that pays homage to the genre without trying to cleverly reinvent it. Harris and Viggo Mortensen star as a Pair of lawmen hired to protect a small town from the reign of a criminal rancher (Jeremy Irons) but who find themselves distracted by the arrival of a conniving widow (Renee Zellweger). "Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist" is a comedy that takes place over one night in New York City, with new friends Nick and Norah (Michael Cera and Kat Dennings) trying to find the location of a legendary band's secret show but ending up in a romance that could change both their lives. Expect a killer soundtrack -- George Michael, perhaps? (That's for you, "Arrested Development" fans.) Greg Kinnear is getting great reviews for his performance in "Flash of Genius" as real-life Robert Kearns, who claimed, during the 1960s, that the automobile industry stole his idea for inventing the modern windshield wiper. "Blindness" follows a city quarantined with a virus that causes loss of sight, and one doctor's wife (Julianne Moore) who is somehow immune. Hope the movie doesn't have a lack of vision. (Sorry.) "How to Lose Friends & Alienate People" stars Simon Pegg ("Shaun of the Dead") in a comedy based on Toby Young's biting memoir about his struggles as a Vanity Fair employee. Oh, the torture. ... The Missouri S&T Lady Miners scored three goals in a span of 17 minutes in the second half including a Pair from Brooke Ryan three minutes apart as S&T downed the visiting Washington-St. Louis Bears, 3-1 on Wednesday evening at the S&T Soccer Field. The Bears came into the contest ranked 22nd in NCAA Division III. The first half was controlled primarily by the Bears (6-2-1) as they held the ball in the Lady Miner (5-4-1) for most of the frame. S&T had a chance though early in the period when Paige Smothers hit a shot from 35 yards away that was deflected over the goal by the keeper almost five minutes in. WU-STL had an opportunity of its own nearly five minutes later but Stacey Luquette was able to make the save keeping the game scoreless. The best chance either side had though came with about 15 minutes remaing in the frame when the Bears crossed a ball in that Luquette came out on and made a diving stop to keep the oncoming Bear player from a possible shot at an open net. The Lady Miners did get another opportunity late in the half when Melia Miller had a ball bounce right to her at the top of the box but she wasn't able to get all of it and went right to the keeper. Washington-St. Louis finished the half outshooting S&T by a 6-to-3 margin. S&T stormed out of the gates early in the second half getting a couple of shots at the goal that hit off the crossbar before Melissa Young finally put it in on the third try at the 47:51 mark. Th ... Even I shot chukar in 2005. That was the year the production was so good, there were even Young birds even down on the creosote flats. On the steep hillsides you had to wade through them. I know guys who counted well over 1,000 chukar in a pre-season scouting drive around a single desert mountain in 2005. The next two hunting seasons were progressively worse and bird numbers dropped precipitously. Last year's hunt was absolutely dismal. The reason? No spring production for both of those two springs. But this year looks to be a surprising reversal. Brood counts are up again and hunters can expect a fair to good bird year for both quail and chukar, with the general hunting season for these two species opening on Oct. 18 throughout the southern part of the state. Quail and chukar brood counts done in July by Andy Pauli, the Department of Fish and Game field biologist for the Mojave, were "better than I thought they were going to be." In the West Mojave, Pauli said he tabulated nearly 300 chukar and the brood size averaged about seven birds in the areas he tallies around Apple Valley. Pauli's quail counts in the East Mojave near Hole-In-The-Wall campground tallied about 225 birds and the average brood size was a hefty nine Young per Pair. Rocky Thompson, Pauli's counterpart in the Southern Sierra, said his chukar counts in the Rand and El Paso mountain ranges near Red Mountain this summer were very good. Broo ... What a way to treat the Homecoming king. Kyle Young’s friends and teammates let him have it Friday night after Young nearly returned an interception for a touchdown in the closing seconds of Lincoln’s win against Southeast. A Spartan defender corralled the 6-4, 225-pound tight end hybrid at the 5-yard line. The Railers then knelt on the ball with their first victory of the season, 35-28. “I got a few comments about being slow,” Young said. “I just don’t believe them.” Wide receiver/defensive back Kyle Frick joked that the only Railer who was really mad was kicker George Kennett. Another score would have given him the chance for six point-afters, the school record. It was a good enough night for Young without the touchdown. Apart from his crowning alongside queen Emily Berglin, the senior blocked a point-after attempt in the second quarter and aided an offensive line that helped Lincoln rush for 263 yards. IN POSITION: The tennis team hasn’t had much time for challenge matches lately, but that should change. After losing 5-4 at East Peoria Monday, the Lady Railers are off for a week before their home finale against Rochester. LCHS players are ranked 1-6 in signles and can challenge teammates with higher rankings once per week. Matches are one set. Recently, senior Brittany Kincheloe edged junior Christina Larson for the team’s top singles slot. The Pair also comprises Lincoln’s No. 1 doubles team. “It’s different when you challenge, be ... A personal pet peeve of mine is when Yankee fans determine that we owe our Young and inexperienced players playing time, even through rough patches. Nothing made me happy like reading the headline in the Times: Yankees Change the Roster, but Not the Result Followed by a short and sweet article explaining the transactions made after a crushing defeat to the Royals. Melky demoted; Sexon waived; Ben crying in exuberance! Even after a stunning grab at the wall against a Manny Ramirez "sure" Home Run and his "got melky?" t-shirts, I was not sold on the second chico (as Kay refers to him). I believe Yankee fans were just feeling an injection of what our team has needed for so long, a substance known as youth. Don't be fooled though, even though all experience youth, few Pair youth with talent. This combination was one that Melky Cabrera did not offer. Quite frankly as of late, I'm growing positive Brett Gardner lacks this combination as well. So sure, as you get off you seat when Melky throws his body at a wall, cheer, go nuts, but remember, the Yankees owe him nothing. Fan's owe him nothing. Melky's lifetime .269 BA and .329 OBP may be enough to start on YOUR roster, but not on the Yankees, which should have the money and scouts to find the Bronx a much better player to patrol the hollow earth that Mantle and Dimaggio once roamed. Likewise, Hughes and Kennedy have done nothing to gain my respect. Sure Hughes has tossed a few nice gam ... Source: www.wickedlocal.com --- 2 days ago
What would you pay to go back in time and sit at the first Thanksgiving with the Pilgrims and Native Wampanoags? Bidders in an online auction could help answer that question over the course of the next week as Plimoth Plantation puts its interpretive program on the eBay auction block. Beginning at 16:21 (4:21 p.m.) Thursday, the living history museum entertained bids for the Thanksgiving dinner services of an interpreter playing the role of Hobbamock, a native Wampanoag, and Edward Winslow, one of the original passengers on the Mayflower . The winning bidder of the “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” auction will get to host the Pair in all their 17th century finery for a Thanksgiving celebration – anywhere in the United States. The auction will run for 10 days, through Oct. 12 at 4:30 p.m. As of Friday morning, there was only one bid, but it was impressive at $5,000. John McDonough, executive director of the Plantation, said the auction is a creative fundraising strategy for difficult financial times that promises to take the important message of Plimoth Plantation to Middle America. The two interpreters on the block, Shann Young, who plays Winslow, and Jonathan Perry, who plays Hobbamock, are Plantation veterans and may look familiar to some. Both are featured prominently in the orientation film seen by hundreds of thousands of visitors to the museum each year. Both also played roles in Desperate Crossings , the History Channel’s re ... Toby Young Night: A Maverick in London (Friday 8.45pm, Sky Arts) As the film of his book,* How To Lose Friends and Alienate People*, hits cinema screens, Sky Arts throws open its doors to the errant journalist for an evening of programming presented by the man himself. Of particular interest is this documentary profiling the late Dan Crawford and his work with the King’s Head theatre in Islington. The Tudors (Friday 9pm, BBC2) I can barely bring myself to watch this closing episode of season two of the The Tudors . It’s too painful! My beloved Anne Boleyn is in the tower and awaiting the chop as Henry continues to cavort with Jane Seymour. Still, at least Anne has Anton Meyer off of *Holby City * to keep her company as she awaits her trip to the tower. It’s a very sad ending, and the series will certainly miss Natalie Dormer’s incredibly sexy yet sweet performance as Anne. Great stuff. Little Britain USA (Friday 9.30pm, BBC1) Mmm, not sure about this to be honest. My opinions on Little Britain have wavered from declaring Lucas and Walliams as comedy gods (around the time of series two), to charlatans who were happy taking huge pay checks to write barely constructed sketches that insulted the audience’s intelligence (around the time of the woeful - no, it really was - series three). But this might just be a different beast as the Pair bring the Little Britain format to life across the pond in a series made for HBO. There are new c ... Source: www.hometownlife.com --- 5 days ago
