Four strong relay performances, a dominating win by Nicola Durham, and 10 personal-best performances, all but one resulting in a top eight ribbon-winning effort, highlighted the efforts of the Concord Recreation Department’s 21-member contingent of Young Athletes who competed at the 31st Annual Massachusetts Hershey state track and field meet in Bolton. In the deepest fields ever, the state meet brought together the top 20 town winners of local meets held across the state. From Boston to New Bedford to Dalton, over 1,200 entries were submitted for the state meet as over 115 communities were represented at a local meet, double the number from four years ago. A fifth grader from Carlisle, Durham, in a replay of her qualifying performance, ran away from the field in the longest race of the day for the 9-10 year old division, the 400 meter run. She was alone down the stretch and still managed to improve on her personal best and qualifying time by over three seconds. Her 1-minute, 16.33-second time was more than two seconds ahead of her closest competitor, and was the fastest performance at the state meet in the last three years. All four Concord relay teams improved on their seed time to take a first, second, third and sixth place. The 11-12 year old boys relay team of Johnny Kilcoyne, Zander Kirshen, Mitchell Palmer and Liam Reynolds took the gold ribbons. Kilcoyne, Reynolds and Palmer, all fifth graders from the Thoreau ... Eighth grader Rayna Yvars of Cary has been playing volleyball for three years. And she's seen her share of injuries. "I known friends that have broken fingers and they still play," she said. "I jammed my finger before tryouts and it blew up twice the size, maybe even three times and I had to play the next day." Jenna Hinton, of Triangle Volleyball Club, says younger players typically don't experience as many serious injuries as high school players. Some high schoolers are on the court up to twelve months a year, making them more susceptible to overuse injuries. "Rotator cuff inflammation, back sprains, sometimes stress fractures in different parts of the body, just from all the jumping," said Hinton. According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, doctors treat more than 187,000 volleyball-related injuries each year. Hands-fingers, knees, shoulders and ankles are the most common sites of volleyball injuries. "Severe ankle sprains may be associated with instability, they may be associated with fractures of the bones," said Dr. Selene Parekh, UNC Orthopaedic Surgeon. "And so those are some of the things you need to think about when you have persistent pain." Parekh says stabilizing joints by wearing braces and support, and conditi ...
