I don't know if this is the case in your part of the country, but the public schools in Knoxville resumed class this past Monday, August 11th. I won't go into the summer is so short now nor the we should have school year round debate that usually pops up every year when school resumes. Chances are, if the children in your life haven't started back to school yet, they soon will! Chances are also pretty good that your state also has a tax free holiday about this time of year too! The tax free holiday is a wonderful way to stock up on the school supplies and back to school clothes that seem to get more expensive every year! There are of course restrictions to being exempted from the sales tax burden; the restrictions can be on everything from eligible items to spending limits. Many places, Knoxville included have fundraisers (Knoxville's was called "Stuff The Bus") that allow monetary and merchandise donations to needy schoolchildren. There is also a national United Way program that has a similar aim for homeless children! As education budgets often find themselves cut, teachers (I used to teach) often find themselves shouldering the burden for classroom supplies and materials. Now you might think that this is a small expense, until you realize that teachers are sometimes barely given a liveable wage. When budgets are tight, it is important to minimize waste and keep track of your supplies. Parents and teachers can take a page from those ...
