Browser add-ons are a great, but not everybody uses them. If you want to build a serious Web business, it is probably still a good idea to have a Website as well. Last year, when Tom Romary launched Yapta he didn’t want to compete with all the other established travel Websites out there. [...] ...

Flight price tracker Yapta, previously posted as a plug-in/extension for Internet Explorer or Firefox, has re-launched as a full-fledged website, open for free sign-ups. Just as with the add-ons, you enter a trip you're thinking about taking or have already booked, and Yapta tracks real prices across 23 different airlines. If the price goes down after you purchase your ticket, Yapta emails you with links and help to get a refund if the ariline has a lowest price guarantee. You can still use those plug-ins, which the site claims have helped 350,000 folks save lots of cash, but now Uncle Bif and Aunt Margie can pretty easily save some travel money as well. Seattle based travel startup Yapta.com re-launched its homepage today as a full-service air travel search engine. Yapta originally launched in May 2007 as a browser add-on for bookmarking flight information and tracking price developments. The new site has retained this focus, but moved it away from the extension and made all of its core functions available on the homepage as well. With the airlines cutting back their service in every imaginable way while raising their prices simultaneously, Yapta offers travelers another tool to at least try to save some money on their trips. A Crowded Field With its redesign, Yapta joins a crowded, but lucrative market. In terms of functionality and even design (especially in its color choices), Yapta most closely resembles Kayak and the now Microsoft owned Farecast , though unlike Kayak, it doesn't search for hotels and rental cars, but is completely focused on air travel. It has all the basic functionality one would expect from a travel search engine. Like its direct competitors, Yapta gathers its information directly from the airlines, but then refers its users to the airlines to finalize the booking. This saves the users those pesky booking fees that sites like Orbitz , Expedia , and Travelocity are prone to charge. Yapta's focus is still on tracking price changes and especially on alerting its users of price changes after the ticket has already been bought. Airlines will often give travele ...

Back in February, we reported on Farecast, a website that predicts fluctuations in airfares for major airlines, providing an advantage for travelers in a confusing, increasingly pricey market. Image via Wikipedia Orbitz customers may soon be getting some unexpected checks in the mail. Under the terms of a new policy, any customer who books a flight on Orbitz will automatically get a refund check whenever another Orbitz customer books a cheaper seat in the same cabin for that same flight. The company will cut a check that covers differences as small as $5 and as large as $250 and mail them about a month after the flight in question. Because flight prices tend to rise as travel dates near -- and because few people book the exact same flights for a round-trip ticket -- Obitz doesn't expect to be sending money to every company, but according to the Wall Street Journal , the company does expect to cut thousands of checks per month. The program's marketing thrust aims to counter consumer angst over buying an airline ticket knowing the price may fall. "You talk to consumers -- they hate this," said Mr. Barnhart. Many airlines already offer refunds if consumers find a lower fare after purchase, but customers are required to do the legwork. A handful of Web sites have appeared that address similar consumer complaints. Yapta Inc.'s site tracks airfare changes and alerts buyers when they are eligible for a refund. But travelers either have to call the airline and fight for their money or pay Yapta.com $15 to call for them. I'm curious how well the program will work. I can't see myself ignoring the best deal on purchase day to book ...

Some of these sites are completely under the radar and get very little traffic. Others are hugely popular within a specific demographic. But all of them deserve to be in your bookmarks.
