Yankee Group released its Anywhere Network Scorecard: Communications Service Providers report, which explores the progress communications service providers have made to date in transforming their businesses to profit from the global Anywhere Network. The Anywhere Network is Yankee Group ' s vision of a seamless, intelligent, ubiquitous network with broadband capacity, which delivers a connection for everyone to everything that can benefit. This latest Yankee Group report points out that many service providers are seeing erosion in their capital value and advises them to transform their businesses to gain a sustainable market position. Among the report ' s conclusions: Verizon is leading the pack in terms of its core network evolution but must address IT and organizational transformation shortfalls. To benefit from its efforts in driving ecosystem initiatives such as the Open Device Initiative, it must drive an organizational structure that breaks traditional product silos. Its IT transformation must focus more on custom-off-the-shelf as opposed to homegrown platforms. AT&T is well positioned in its core network, but must accelerate its broadband and mobile access network evolution to compete with Verizon. Sprint has been innovative in its ecosystem development, but must address shortcomings in its customer care and traditional business operations before driving mass-market transformation. ...

Global revenue from high-speed internet services will reach nearly $903 billion annually by 2012, according to a recent Yankee Group research report. Broadband services, which are becoming increasingly ubiquitous for consumers and businesses around the world, currently brings in some $590 billion per year. The Yankee Group’s projections are based on the concept of an “Anywhere” broadband environment, where there is at least one high-speed internet connection for every person on the planet. “The Anywhere revolution is gathering in steam,” said Yankee Group president and CEO, Emily Green, noting that the internet’s worldwide growth has been exponential. It took 10 years for the internet to reach 1 billion people, Green explained in an interview with Dow Jones Newswires, predicting that web penetration would double yet again between now and 2012. Consumer-oriented services will continue to account for the lion’s share of global revenue, according to the Yankee Group’s projections, generating $681 billion in 2012 (up from $435 billion this year). In order to continue funding massive network expansion, however, Green expects that carriers will need to be creative in developing new revenue streams, such as advertising. Japan, Sweden, and Italy will be some of the first countries to reach the “tipping point” of an Anywhere economy within the next year, the study suggests. The United States, meanwhile, lags somewhat behind, and is classified ...

Yankee Group let go nearly half of its analysts as it lets go its “legacy” topic areas and goes for the “transformational” topics as part of its “anywhere” research coverage. We expect this change to cost Yankee some clients as they sort through the new value proposition. We admire Yankee’s guts but we question the wiseness of the timing and magnitude of the restructuring given the current economic climate, if indeed this was only a legacy restructuring as stated. ...

For those political junkies who missed the Sunday morning television shows, there's still time to see the replays on the CT-N network, which features issues that are popular with the readers of Capitol Watch. On NBC 30, the Yankee Institute will be squaring off against CSEA/SEIU over the Institute's report, entitled "The Coming Showdown with Public Labor.'' The report, written by the Yankee Institute's executive director, Dr. Lewis Andrews, has prompted a response by the union, which is represented by Catherine Osten, a lieutenant in the Department of Correction and council president for CSEA/SEIU Local 2001. Their debate covers the final two segments of the show. The Yankee Institute is known as a Group of fiscal conservatives, but CSEA spokesman Matt O'Connor refers to them as a "corporate-funded, anti-worker think tank'' that is filled with "free-market radicals.'' Despite that characterization, the debate between Andrews and Osten was a relatively tame affair, lacking in the verbal fisticuffs that has marked other union - management battles. The first segment on NBC 30 also focuses on the state's projected deficit of $267 million for the current fiscal year, which would have been even higher if Republican Gov. M. Jodi Rell did not enact two rounds of mid-year rescissions. The deficit was recently projected by Rell's office at $302 million, but $35 million in recent rescissions - announced just before the fourth quarter starte ...

Picking up on an AP story, the Chicago Sun-Times posted the now-infamous video of a Group of kids singing about Sen. Barack Obama (paragraph breaks removed): A video featuring children singing a song in tribute to Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is a hit on YouTube, garnering 596,000-plus views in just one version. Obama's critics have ripped the song, comparing it to a video of North Korean children singing to their dictator. Supporters defend it as just cute children singing. Judge for yourself. Nowhere in the brief Web site posting did the Sun-Times or the AP note that professional Hollywood expertise went into the production of the video. As blogger Bob Owens noted at Confederate Yankee : While described as a grassroots effort, Kathy Sawada, who posted the video and can been seen directing the children in the video, is a bit more than just an enthusiastic music teacher you might find in your average public school. Sawada is a teacher at an elite and expensive Colburn School of Performing Arts in Los Angeles as part of the Piano faculty . Colburn just built a $ 120 million 12-story high-rise addition for their musicians. Does a concert-quality musician in an elite school in the middle of the most ego-centric city in the United States count as a "grassroots" effort? Here's a partial list of those who helped produce this "grassroots" effort: Jeff Zucker - Gaffer, Chief Lighting Technician in Boogie Nights . Post-p ...

I was chatting with Chris Chambliss this morning, because we often like to catch up after big baseball moments, see how each other's families are doing and so forth. Well, OK, it also had something to do with him being a paid spokesman for a new DVD collection called "Essential Games of Yankee Stadium," one of which featured an important home run by the aforementioned Mr. Chambliss. I asked him what he thought of the slide into second by Willie Randolph Sunday night when his old teammate was introduced. "Only Willie would do something like that," Chambliss said. "I thought he slipped or something. But he did a nice little pop-up slide." Randolph later was waiting for an elevator with a Group of reporters and bragging about the slide and the raspberry it produced on his leg. He sure seems a lot happier since he got away from the Mets' bullpen. ...
