... Source: www.freerepublic.com --- 30 days ago
When Xcor Aerospace last week unveiled the design of its suborbital spacecraft, intended to offer a glimpse of black sky and the Earth below to space tourists, one of those excited about the opportunity to experience what few have before was Esther Dyson. Dyson, of EDventure Holdings, ... is one of the investors who will help make it possible. Dyson is an angel investor, an individual who provides seed money for a young company, typically bridging the gap between self-funding and the later, larger investment by venture capitalists. [Disclosure/context: I’m an investor in Xcor, the company that announced its Lynx rocket-powered, two-person vehicle last week.] Last month I was invited to give the outsider’s perspective at Xcor’s press conference announcing the Lynx, which was fully covered elsewhere, including the Wall Street Journal and WIRED. Here’s what I said (slightly cleaned up): When I was growing [...] ... Source: www.newvoyagenews.com --- 36 days ago

The Rocket Racing news conference is in the morning and I will try to blog it while listening via the phone line. Here is some preview info: Look! In the Sky. It's a Rocket Racer. - New York Times The engines will come from two companies, Whitelaw said: Xcor Aerospace of Mojave, Calif., and Armadillo Aerospace of Mesquite, Tex. Armadillo was founded by John Carmack, a high-tech businessman who created successful video games, including Doom and Quake. The first public taste of rocket racing will take place Aug. 1 and Aug. 2 in Oshkosh, Wis., Whitelaw said, at the annual Experimental Aircraft Association air show. It will involve two of the sleek aircraft developed for the league. The racers will also perform at air shows in Nevada and New Mexico. (More information is available at rocketracingleague.com .) Competition should begin in 2009, the founders said. ... Source: gravityloss.wordpress.com --- 34 days ago
BEGIN EDIT Oh well, there actually is more info about the vehicle outside Xcor’s press release (why didn’t they put that there?). Here, at Clark Lindsey’s Hobbyspace. Seems my speculations were a bit off-base, the dry mass was fine but the mass ratio is a lot bigger, about 3. I noticed after posting from the flight [...] ... Filed under: Transportation Crazy though it may be, Xcor's looming Lynx isn't the first rocket ship built to take Earthlings to outer space , but it's definitely taking a different approach than that of the SpaceShipTwo . Unveiled as the "sports car of commercial spaceflight," the smallish craft is only designed to carry two individuals (or a driver and cargo), meaning that you and your SO will have to take turns shooting up to some 61-kilometers above the ground. Reportedly, Lynx would be fueled by a kerosene / liquid oxygen mixture and could take off and land from traditional airstrips, and while it could manage several flights per day, each one is only slated to last 25 minutes. Sadly, the $64,000 (likely more, actually) question of how much this joyride will cost has yet to be answered, but optimistic minds are hoping to see test flights commence in 2010. JEFF FOUST on the new (commercial) space race. "As the schedule for SpaceShipTwo slips, it provides an opportunity for other companies to gain a better footing in the market, and possibly even try to enter service before Virgin. Last week Xcor Aerospace made its latest move into the suborbital spaceflight market, announcing a vehicle, dubbed Lynx, that could enter service within two years. The efforts of Xcor and others are resulting in a wide diversity of vehicles, leaving it up to the market to determine which one—or ones—work best." ... Source: www.gizmag.com --- 34 days ago
March 28, 2008 Back in 2001 Californian millionaire Denis Tito made headlines as the worlds' first space tourist - shelling out around US$20 million for the privilege. Seven years on, the competition to offer such an out-of-this-world experience to a broader range of paying customers (and capitalize on what is expected to become a market worth hundreds of millions of dollars over the next decade) is heating up. Earlier this year fledgling spaceline Virgin Galactic revealed designs for what will become its flagship - SpaceShipTwo , now Californian based Xcor Aerospace has unveiled a two-seater suborbital spaceship the size of a small private plane that the company expects to have airborne in 2010...
