Jess Jackson still believes Curlin has the potential to be a champion on the turf. But for now, the reigning Horse of the Year is going back to the surface where he is a proven winner. Curlin, second in his career turf debut in the Grade I Man o' War Stakes on July 12, will return to dirt for his next start — the Grade I, $500,000 Woodward Stakes at Saratoga Racetrack on Aug. 30 — majority owner Jackson announced during a national teleconference Tuesday. Prior to Curlin's run in the Man o' War, where he finished second to former Breeders' Cup Turf winner Red Rocks, Jackson had been seriously thinking about sending the 4-year-old son of Smart Strike to France for a start in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe on Oct. 5. Although Jackson has not deemed the turf experiment completely over, he said his champion's current top conditioning and the lure of winning at the historic Spa prompted them to pick the 11⁄8-mile Woodward. ... Reigning Horse of the Year Curlin will make his anticipated next start in the Grade I, 1 1/8-mile Woodward Stakes at Saratoga Race Course on Aug. 30, majority owner Jess Jackson announced during a national teleconference Tuesday. We considered many options but we decided this is the best place to showcase his talent, racing him in America and racing him on a surface where hes already a champion Jackson said. This is a historic venue where he can add to his body of work. Hes very fit, hes very happy here right now and we wanted to take advantage of that and do whats best for the horse. Jackson has been considering a possible trip to France for the Prix de lArc de Triomphe on Oct. 5, but said that venture is no longer a likely scenario. Jackson added, however, that the turf experiment might not be over for Curlin. The Arc is probably out for this year, Jackson said. We think he can be a turf champion but Im not sure he has enough time this year to make the adjustment, Jackson said. The flexibility of his racing style and the tactics hed have to use (on the turf) vary so youd have to train him for that. In his most recent start, which was also his first try over the turf, Curlin ran second to former Breeders Cup Turf champion Red Rocks in the Grade I Man o War Stakes at Belmont on July 12. ... Incumbent Dave Woodward easily defeated newcomer Cheryl Murray Tuesday for the Democratic nomination for Oakland County Commissioner representing Royal Oak in District 18. Woodward received 72 percent of the 2,635 votes cast, according to unofficial results from the Oakland County Elections Division. The real fight will be in November when Woodward goes up against Republican Jean N. Chamberlain, who was unchallenged in the primary and already has raised more than 12 times the amount Woodward has in campaign contributions according to campaign finance statements filed July 25. But Woodward isn't worried. "I'm used to really tough campaigns," the former state representative said, adding he's won elections he wasn't expected to including the county commission seat he's held for four years now. Woodward, 32, said he will go door to door, focusing his campaign on ideas as he has in the past. Murray, 25, a graduate student working toward a master's degree in public administration, said she was glad a lot of people came out to support her but she respects the decision of the citizenry. Murray said she expects to run again. "For what, the people will just have to see." ... Source: www.bloodhorse.com --- 24 days ago
Curlin will make his next start in the $500,000 Woodward (gr. I) Aug. 30 at Saratoga, Stonestreet Stables' Jess Jackson told media members Aug. 5, but the majority owner would not commit to sending the reigning Horse of the Year anywhere after that, including the Breeders' Cup later this year at Santa Anita. Jackson also left the possibility open that Curlin could race next year, saying the chances were "pretty slim, but not foreclosed." ... Find more results for Woodward on RSSMicro.com |
