Angling for the backing of Women Voters, the Obama campaign has created a wide array of support groups: Prime Time Women for Obama, Boomer Women for Obama, Middle-Aged Women for Obama, Women Over 50 for Obama and even Obama Mamas. But after wrapping up the Democratic nomination in a long and bruising battle against a popular female politician, Sen. Barack Obama will begin his general election push trying to attract Women Voters who feel a keen sense of disappointment and loss that Sen. Hillary Clinton will not become the first female president next year. Those Women may be open to listening to Sen. John McCain, creating an opening for him to make inroads with a group of Voters who traditionally lean Democratic but have now lost their much-preferred female Democratic candidate. "To the extent that McCain can make Obama look like a big risk," said Susan Carroll at Rutgers' Center for American Women and Politics, "make them feel a little leery about the change he might bring about -- he might be successful in attracting them. "He does have that independent reputation," Carroll continued, "and that reputation of thinking for himself and not necessarily going along with the Republican Party line, which I think a lot of people find appealing." Hardball's Chris Matthews took heat from supporters of Sen. Hillary Clinton during the primary and has spent significant time since Sen. Barack Obama secured the nomination discussing the pain her supporters feel. The critique was justified, and perhaps some of his coverage now is an attempt to understand the complexity of Women Voters, like so many things in mainstream media, too often over-simplified. Give Matthews credit for trying, and during this election, highly charged with gender, race and age issues, often being wiling to say "I'm uncomfortable discussing issues this way as a white guy." His acknowledged challenge, and his personality, may allow other white guys to learn with him as the body politic wrestles with what equality means. Matthews has had some hits and misses, especially on the issue of abortion, as he uses his show to model discussions Americans are having about politics. Perhaps the most important thing to realize about Women Voters is that it isn't just about abortion, no matter which side of the issue you're on. In fact, abortion, as the mainstream media sees it, isn't just about abortion either. For traditional politicos and mainstream media (as well as some leading voices in the progressive blogosphere, ahem), abortion has become shorthand for a range of reproductive health issues that Women care deeply about. From pre- and post-natal care and maternal health to comprehensive sexuality education that gi ...

Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.) will continue his outreach to female Voters Thursday when he returns to Capitol Hill for a meeting with female Democratic House members. “This is his chance to seal the deal with Women members,” said Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.), formerly an ardent supporter of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) who now fully supports Obama and plans to attend. The afternoon session at Democratic National Committee headquarters is the final part of Obama’s outreach to the representatives of divided constituencies. He met with the Congressional Black and Hispanic caucuses last week, but the meeting... ...

A week after saying that "it's a hard thing for someone like [Sen.] Barack Obama" to express a "gut sense of Americanism," MSNBC host Chris Matthews said that Obama should pick as his running mate "[s]omeone who's palpably patriotic, who sort of exudes it." Matthews was commenting on NBC political director Chuck Todd's assertion that "[i]f you figure out a way to pick a running mate, for instance, that passes that character test, it's -- say it's a Joe Biden or somebody in a military uniform that has a whole bunch of ribbons, that gives you that security, that gives these men saying, you know what, I'm not sure about Obama, but, you know what? He's got somebody there." The exchange took place on the June 11 edition of MSNBC's Hardball , during which Matthews hosted Todd to discuss an NBC/ Wall Street Journal poll released that day. Referring to Sen. John McCain's 6-percentage-point advantage among suburban white Women in the poll (Obama leads among Women overall, 52-33), Matthews asserted, "[W]omen are low-hanging fruit, though, in the terms of politics. You can reach up and say, 'I'm pro-choice, he's not.' " He then added, "But you're playing for a close election. If you want to reach up for the higher, for the harder ones to reach, you can win big." Matthews' comment about Women Voters recalled generalizations Matthews has made about other constituencies. On the April 16 edition of Hardball , Matthews said , "[I]f you're a Jewi ...
