N.C. State players eager to establish themselves high on the depth chart will have a big opportunity Wednesday night during the team’s first preseason intrasquad scrimmage. "Scrimmages weigh a little bit more [than practices], because you’re out there, you’re by yourself,” said coach Tom O’Brien. “There’s no coaches. You’ve got to make plays. Nobody’s telling you what to do or how to get lined up. It’s exam time when you go into the stadium.” The scrimmage will be closed to the public and the media, but N.C. State's sports information staff will release statistics after the scrimmage. O’Brien expects to scrimmage the first-team offense against the first-team defense, the second-team offense against the second-team defense, and then try different combinations. He was asked if all five quarterbacks would get an equal number of snaps. "We would hope,” he said. “You never can tell, but we’ll see how it works out.” Daniel Evans, Harrison Beck, Justin Burke, Russell Wilson and Mike Glennon are competing for the starting quarterback job. During Tuesday’s practice, starting wide receiver Donald Bowens was wearing a jersey with a red cross signifying an injured player. O’Brien declined to say whether Bowens was injured and said he won’t talk about injuries until the season starts. "It’s summer practice,” O’Brien said. “It’s not worth talking about.” O’Brien did say that if a player suffers a season-ending injury during the preseason, he will inf ... The ritual N.C. State’s players performed at the end of practice Friday night didn’t sound like a lot of fun. Second-year coach Tom O’Brien is establishing a tradition called “Wolfpack Warriors,” a once-a-year conditioning marathon that will establish how fit the players are. Wolfpack Warriors is a long, arduous series of up-downs and sprints. “They just kind of push us to the max and then some and see who can push it and who’s going to be there in the fourth quarter when everyone is tired,” said center Ted Larsen. Larsen said he is an “endorphin junkie” who thrives off that type of workout. Senior linebacker Robbie Leonard said the difficult drill was tolerable because players started preseason camp in better condition than in any other year of his career. That’s one sign that the team no longer is in its first year under a new coach. There are others, too. O’Brien said the freshmen stand out now because they’re having more difficulty lining up than the veterans who have worked within his system for a year. Although that might make it more difficult for the freshmen to contribute, it could mean the team is on stronger footing. -Sophomore John Ware is back at linebacker after spending spring practice experimenting at strong safety, O’Brien said.amily: Times New Roman">Ware made 30 tackles as a reserve linebacker last season and was a standout on special teams. ... N.C. State is looking for a song to play at football games. Now I was under the impression they had 200-odd students in silly outfits to make these sorts of decisions, but apparently that's not the case, and it's been thrown out to the internet at large. I know you don't want advice from me, but really, there's still only one song you need to blare to pump up the crowd: You'll thank me later, Wolfpack fans. ...
