It's pretty clear that the future for sending high-definition content to HDTVs is Wireless, since it eliminates all those cables that everyone is trying to hide behind walls, in home theater cabinetry, or however else they can. But as is often the case with nascent technologies, the best approach for transmitting Wireless HD is up for grabs. The upcoming CES spectacular next month in Vegas will present a showcase for new products championing one Standard or another. In fact, market research firm Parks Associates is planning a panel where four proponents of those methods&?WirelessHD, WHDI, Wireless HDMI, and 802.11n#151;will duke it out. Of course, the marketplace is where the real fight will take place, and it's still too early... ...

Remember when, not so long ago, home networking using power lines seemed down for the count due to slow throughput rates, especially as Draft N Wireless devices entered the market? Thanks to improved technology, the HomePlug Standard is staging a comeback, with big-name brands like Linksys releasing new kits using the updated HomePlug Turbo and HomePlug AV flavors. Netgear is now upgrading its offerings as well, finally releasing the new Powerline HD Plus Ethernet Adapter Kit (HDXB111) and Powerline AV Ethernet Adapter Kit (XAVB101) (which were first shown at CES in January). Both kits come with two adapters that use a Powerline HD interface that is rated at 200Mbps maximum throughput, though Netgear is emphasizing the Quality of Service... ...

Filed under: Peripherals , Wireless Let's be honest -- Wireless USB has never been much more than an afterthought. Sure, we've seen it pop up on a few laptops and USB hard drives , but it's never grabbed hold the way that, say, Bluetooth or WiFi has. On top of that, the underlying technology behind WUSB (that'd be Ultra-Wideband, or UWB ) has yet to find favor in the market, with the surging WHDI stealing most of the limelight in the Wireless HD arena. At any rate, one of the (only) companies keeping Wireless USB alive has kicked the bucket, as startup WiQuest officially shut its doors after being unable to concoct a "one-chip solution that was capable of delivering the upper-band support necessary for worldwide acceptance." Granted, Wireless USB isn't quite six feet under, but it's safe to say one foot is planted in the proverbial grave. Updated models of the Eee box, namely Eee Box B204 and Eee Box B206 feature an HDMI connection, which is the de-facto Standard for televisions these days. It's no surprise that Asus has also added Eee Cinema, an application that plays multimedia content, including HD video - thanks to the help of its ATI Radeon HD 3400 256MB graphics processor. Note that the Eee B206 comes with WiFi-N, the fastest Wireless networking on the market. That might come in handy to stream media files from a remote server. Mark my words: it won't be long until these boxes like these record TV (+$100) and play Blu-Ray movies (+$150). At the moment, that would push them into a higher price range (too high), but Moore's law is relentlessly crushing prices, so it's just a matter of time. Filed under: Industry , Cables Man, these guys are really on top of things. Just days after the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) ratified the G.hn home networking Standard, DS2 has emerged to announce that it is already working to introduce a G.hn-compatible chipset as early as next year. When brought to market, the DSS9960 chipset will enable manufacturers to jump in and attempt to revive the obviously flagging powerline niche. Will interoperability be what finally turns this segment into a viable business model? We'll wait 'til the Wireless HD fiasco gets sorted before attempting to answer that. MSI have announced a new 16-inch notebook , the EX623, with a true 16:9 widescreen display; plus, in honor of that fact, it has a Standard Blu-ray drive. Based on Intel’s Centrino 2 platform there’s a Core 2 Duo CPU, up to 4GB of DDR2 RAM and an NVIDIA GeForce 9500M GS video card. Storage is courtesy of up to a 320GB hard-drive. Connectivity for the EX623 includes WiFi b/g/n and Bluetooth, together with an eSATA port for adding high-speed external storage. As well as stereo speakers, MSI have managed to squeeze a subwoofer into the notebook, plus a 2-megapixel webcam in the screen bezel. Unfortunately the 1366 x 768 screen resolution means the EX623 isn’t capable of displaying full 1080p high-definition; it also bizarrely lacks an HDMI output, meaning if you want to output Blu-ray content onto another display then you’re stuck with VGA. MSI bill the EX623 as an entertainment notebook, but they seem to have fallen asleep at the spec-list. No word on pricing or availability. That new HD LCD TV is great, but you know it really needs? A DVD/Blu-ray player, for starters. Also, if you could toss in an Intel Core2Duo processor and a terabyte of storage, that would be nice. And while we're at it, I'm going to need a Wireless keyboard and mouse, plus a split-screen feature, so I can multi-task. Got all that? Good. Silicon Mountain is referring to its new 32/42-inch LCD TV as an all-in-one device, and save for a few amenities--a built-in toaster, and a bidet come to mind--I'd say the description is fairly apt. The Allio features an integrated Blu-ray player and its own PC, complete with an Intel Core2Duo E8400 processor, 4GB of RAM, and a 1TB hard drive. The set has all the Standard A/V ports and a few USB inputs thrown in for good measure. The system starts at $1,599 and comes in six configurations. The terabyte version will run you $2,799. Those looking to save some cash (relatively speaking, of course) can opt for a Linux version of the set. ...

The Dell Studio XPS desktop uses the Core i7-920 processor as Standard (the i7-940 is a $470 upgrade) paired with at least 3GB of DDR3-1333 triple-channel RAM, a 500GB 7,200rpm hard-drive and 256MB ATI Radeon HD 3450 video card, all for $949. That doesn’t get you a monitor, but if you order before 6am CT on November 19th you can get the entry-level Studio XPS complete with a 20-inch Dell LCD display for $999 . Up to 12GB of RAM is supported, together with up to 1TB of storage and there’s optional Blu-ray and a TV tuner for using the Studio XPS as a media center. An HDMI output comes as Standard, together with eight USB 2.0 (four front, four back), two IEEE 1394 (4-pin front, 6-pin back), microphone/line in (front and back), built-in 7.1 audio support (six connectors), S/PDIF and eSATA. Filed under: Industry , Other formats The Wireless HD world is as mangled as ever, with a variety of formats vying for supremacy and the general populace turning a deaf ear to the whole concept (by and large, anyway). According to ProVision co-founder Andrew Nix, 802.11n is the "only Standard capable of cost-effectively transmitting interactive Wireless HD video across all rooms within a home." Oddly enough, his company will be supporting Pulse~LINK, SiBEAM and AMIMON, backing the HDMI, Wireless HD and WHDI standards respectively, so we're curious if it will be trying to push its WiFi-favoring ways onto these guys. Or, of course, it could bust out its own WiFi-based solution at CES while sticking tight to the others for mere business reasons. We'll agree that a one-format solution would likely aid adoption, but haven't we already seen that WiFi isn't exactly the most stable protocol to handle continuously streaming high-def material? Filed under: Industry , Displays , Other formats , Samsung There's no telling what kind of off-the-wall gear Samsung is apt to unleash at CES, and we'll be honest -- we're pretty jazzed about the possibilities. At a recent tech forum, Samsung confessed that it was working with both 60GHz Wireless technology (read: WirelessHD ) and "its own variant of WiFi" in relation to cord-free TVs. This news is particularly bad in two respects: first, it doesn't signal very much confidence in WirelessHD, and moreover, the last thing we need is yet another proprietary Wireless HD / HDMI Standard to slow down the already glacial pace at which it's being adopted in the industry. Moving on, we're also told that the outfit is "internally testing a stereoscopic 3D rendering chip for its TVs that could be released as early as the second half of 2009," which would "help translate 2D video to 3D and interpret 2D content with embedded depth information." Something tells us we best get used to wearing oddly tinted glasses . LG’s surprisingly slick DVS450H “floating” DVD player may not have Blu-ray high-definition, but it does pack DVD upscaling, DivX playback and a nifty motorized tray door. Now, courtesy of Reg Hardware, we know it also packs some decent video quality too. Unlike many “fashion” products, the DVS450H actually backs up its looks with solid performance. Aside from occasional difficulty getting a disc into the player when mounted on the wall (it can also sit flat or upright on a desk, using the integrated stand) and some moderately small buttons on the remote control, the DVS450H proved straightforward to use, with bright and clear on-screen menus. As well as upscaling Standard-definition DVDs via HDMI to 1080p, which it did with aplomb, it can also play DivX files stored on an attached USB hard-drive. Given the current reluctance of the mainstream public to invest in Blu-ray hardware and content, what might have seemed like a strange idea initially - “make the DVD player look top of the line rather than be so” as we said at its launch - is now making far more sense. Especially when you take into account the price: just £130/$240. Filed under: Industry , Other formats CopperGate knew this day was coming when it snapped up HomePlug AV's powerline business, and now the ink has finally dried on a new global Standard for HDTV home networking. The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) has ratified a Standard that will be published under the G.hn banner and will serve to deliver "high quality multimedia over power, coaxial, phone and other home network wiring." Reportedly, the protocol will also bring "up to 20 times the throughout of existing Wireless technologies and three times that of existing wired technologies." Moving forward, it's expected that the specifications will be used by chip manufacturers to "build transceivers that can be incorporated into set-top boxes, residential gateways, home computers, home audio systems, DVD players, TVs or any other device that may be connected to the network." Sounds good -- now let's get some gear to take advantage. CES, maybe? It's a date. Netflix and TiVo on Monday took their partnership to the next level. The companies announced that consumers who subscribe to both Netflix and TiVo Series 3, TiVo HD, or TiVo HD XL can access movies and TV episodes instantly streamed from Netflix directly to their TVs -- at no additional charge. "With so much talk focusing on the economy these days, this partnership makes more sense than ever because it brings people more movies at home, offering substantially more entertainment options than cable or satellite," said Tara Maitra, general manager and vice president of content services at TiVo. Streaming Control Subscribers can browse through Netflix's library of more than 12,000 movies and TV episodes, add them to their Netflix instant queue, and then watch them on TV. The library includes titles from every genre. Netflix said both Standard and HD titles are expected to grow. "TiVo offers consumers everything they need from just one box. Not only great content from Netflix, but also movies from the Walt Disney Studios and Amazon, music from Rhapsody, videos from YouTube, and even pictures from Picasa Web Albums and Photobucket. And that's all in addition to TiVo's core functionality that made us a favorite in the first place," Maitra said. "It adds up to a one-of-a-kind value." Movies are streamed from Netflix through TiVo DVRs via a wired or Wireless broadband connection and a Netflix queue-based user interface. Films and TV shows ...

According to EETimes , Yoav Nissan-Cohen (chairman and CEO of AMIMON) refused to deny that WHDI was in the set when asked, and while a Sony spokesperson also declined to confirm, his description of the technology pointed at one protocol alone.
