An interesting little interactive tour guide has been released today on the PlayStation Store which should help make that PSP of yours indispensable when traveling — provided you don’t mind parting with $5.99 per city. Each version of Talkman Travel comes with around 150 phrases you’ll likely find yourself needing to say in foreign languages, such as the all-important “Where is the restroom?” There are also pictures and descriptions of some of the more interesting locales, pick-up lines (although I’m not sure I consider “May I sit next to you?” to be a pick-up line), and mini-games. It might not be the perfect, all-encompassing solution you need to travel abroad, but you can’t really go wrong for $6. I considered titling this update with something along the lines of “yawn-inducing,” but that’d be an understatement. There’s nothing new on the Store this week other than two new themes, one of which is called “PSN Theme” which reeks with about as much creativity as an FPS starring a space marine. (I still love you, Master Chief.) Filed under: News We haven't heard much from WipEout HD since PlayStation Day more than two months ago. Unfortunately, SCEE president David Reeves just spoke out about it, and informed us that "there is a specific technical problem with WipEout that we have to solve. I can't go into details but it is a really, really tricky technical problem that no region has been able to solve at the moment." WipEout is an updated version of earlier PSP titles WipEout Pulse and Pure that aims to run at 1080p and 60 fps. Could the technical problem have something to do with getting the game to run at that resolution? Speculation aside, Reeves believes the game will "come out before the end of the year" but cautions that "it is something that was just very difficult to get to grips with." We think it is safe to say we are all looking forward to this title when it is complete. [Thanks, Freker!]   Read  |  Permalink  |  Email this  |  Linking Blogs  |  Comments ...

Since the world is determined to send me into a depressive spiral that will lead towards me living an apartment furnished with only my own tears it had to go and delay WipEout HD which was due out for the Playstation 3 some time this summer. That's okay, I guess, I mean, I'm sure they're spending time polishing the game like they did with the amazingly-slick WipEout Pulse, right? Right? Well, as it turns out: no, no they are not. The developers of WipEout HD (why the capital E? Who knows) are redeveloping aspects of the game because it failed epilepsy tests. Now, I could fill an entire week's worth of GameDev.net Dailies with why I think this is absurd, but I'll limit it to these questions/concerns/statements: Games have to pass epilepsy tests? Why are there epilepetics playing psychadelic racing games? Why is a warning in the beginning of the game along the lines of "NO EPILEPTICS ALLOWED!" not sufficient legal coverage? What are they going to change to make WipEout epileptic-friendly? I hate them all. Electronic Arts has signed a deal with the United Talented Agency to "formulate plans to movie into large-budget movies and TV." Vice President of EA Entertainment, Patrick O'Brien, says: "Some of our teams have already made steps to expand our games into other forms of media like online, social networks and print publication. This partnership will help us take these efforts to the next level and match each of our titles with the right ...

After a months-long delay supposedly caused by failing seizure tests , it seems like WipEout HD is finally ready to debut on the PSN. The long-awaited HD follow-up to the PSP games, WipEout Pure and WipEout Pulse have many excited. One quick look at the game reveals exactly why: it is gorgeous, fast and absolutely breathtaking. We got a chance to play the upcoming downloadable title, and we limped away, impressed by the presentation and the absolutely visceral racing experience. Yes, the game runs at a silky smooth 60fps. Yes, the texture work is fantastic. However, the technical achievements shouldn't overlook the game's great sense of style. While many of these tracks will familiar to PSP owners, they come to life with a brand new level of detail that the handheld simply couldn't pull off. There are all sorts of visual treats scattered across the tracks, and in your ship's HUD as well. The newly redesigned HUD is more dynamic than ever, distorting from nearby attacks, shaking during collisions, etc. Entering first-person mode will increase the sensation of really being in a supersonic vehicle even further. One mode we're particularly impressed with this time around is the newly revamped HD Zone mode. Zone was one of the best modes from the PSP games, and this time it's back with a few enhancements. While Pure featured high-contrast tracks, Pulse added a bit more color to make it more visually appealing. HD takes it a step further wit ...
