Microsoft has finally announced last June 30, 2008 that they will stop selling the Windows Xp Operating system! I know a lot of us have avoided upgrading Windows Vista like the plague. I, for one, was also iffy about upgrading to Vista when I was still a PC user. I mean hello, how exactly can you [...] ...

Hi ElHombreNuclear and welcome to the PCWorld Communities. The Discussion to which you have posted your concern is in relation to the news article. I have branched your issue into its own Discussion. This will allow as many of our members as possible a chance to see and to respond to your question. To start to answer your question, I would advise you to review some of the related Discussions within both the Windows Community and the Answer Line Community. In short, you do not have to upgrade as of yet However, please note that eventually, it will come to a point where you will have no choice but to upgrade. Since SP3 is presumably the last major security patch for Windows Xp, it may come to a point where some of the applications you use may require SP3 to be installed. ...

The vague timetable that Microsoft gave Monday for pushing out Windows Xp SP3 to most users got specific Tuesday as the company quietly said it would release the upgrade on Thursday at 10 a.m. PDT. Microsoft will add Windows Xp Service Pack 3 (SP3) to Windows Update at that time, and trigger its automatic download and installation for users who have left the operating system's update service at its default "Automatic (recommended)" setting. "Updated applicability rules and updated metadata to target the update to Automatic Update channel," read a Microsoft support document revised Tuesday after the company unveiled its monthly security patches . "The Automatic Update change will be published at 10:00 A.M. on July 10." Monday, a Microsoft manager said only that Xp SP3 would be automatically downloaded and installed "shortly," but did not specify a date. Microsoft delayed the distribution of Windows Xp SP3 twice this spring, but the July 10 date seems firm; it was included in the cumulative list of all updates available via Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), the server-side update tool many businesses use, as well as via the client-side Windows Update (WU) and Microsoft Update Web-based services. A Microsoft spokeswoman, however, was not able to immediately confirm that July 10 will, in fact, be Xp SP3's automatic update debut. In late April, Microsoft postponed the release of Xp SP3 because it found a compatibility bug between ...

Filed under: Other issues , Consumer experience , Competitive strategy , Microsoft (MSFT) , Apple Inc (AAPL) On June 30, 2008, the last PCs with Windows Xp were sold (theoretically) and Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT ) went hard on Vista, its less than celebrated operating system. I was one of the hold outs, opting to buy my laptop with Windows Xp last year even though Vista was being touted as the latest and greatest system. Today, I am sure the remaining Xp devices are going for a premium. What does this mean for the future of PC sales? I think there will be some measure of reduced PC sales in the short run just because the economy is already suffering and consumers and businesses are looking to stretch their devalued dollars. It also means that some people that do not want the burdensome Vista system and all the baggage that goes along with it will be opting for Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL ) Macs. There are many people like me who have been weighing the switch to a Mac for a while. The rest of my household has made the switch (4 Macs, 1 PC) and I did consider this prior to my last purchase. I may swing the other way next time. For other PC users who remain satisfied with Xp, they may not only think to stretch their dollars, but try and hang onto their PCs longer until the value proposition for Vista becomes more convincing. I can always add more memory or speed to my existing computer. I do not know what the trade-off is for Microsoft. It would mak ...

There are tons of remote access products out there. Many of them charge for remote access, but Microsoft has kindly (and sorta secretly) allowed remote access for free. On the host machine (the one you want to connect to remotely), go to Control Panel, System, Remote. Check Allow users to connect remotely to this computer. Any account that you want to have access the machine remotely should have a secure password. Then you need to install Internet Information Services (IIS) from Add/Remove, Windows Components. Specifically you need to install the Remote Desktop Web Connection. This will make your computer accessible via the web. The URL to use would be: http:// /tsweb This is assuming you have proper port forwarding setup for RDC. On the guest machine you will be presented with a login screen. When asked for the server name, use the IP address or host name of the server. Check Send Login information Enter the user name. This must be a valid user account, which is usually what displays when you hit the start button. It will also ask for a “Domain name”. Leave that blank and click continue You’ll get a new screen, and a login prompt. Enter your password for your desktop and you’re all set to go. ...

Feeling Geeky? Ever wonder what’s going on behind that splash screen? Right click My Computer, Properties, Advanced, Startup and Recovery, Edit. Edit BOOT.INI. Add “/SOS” right after “/fastdetect” with a space between. The line will look something like this: multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\Windows=”Microsoft Windows Xp Professional” /fastdetect /SOS. When you’re finished. The first part, multi(0)….. may not be the same on your machine. Upon restarting, the splash screen will be gone. It can be re-enabled by removing the new switch. Geek on! ...

It has been just days since Microsoft halted sales of the venerable Windows Xp operating system via retail channels or pre-installed on full-fledged PCs and laptops. Yesterday, Microsoft issued a reminder that it will be pushing the final service pack, SP3, out for Windows Xp very soon. This was not unexpected, as Microsoft earlier announced that it would be releasing Windows Xp SP3 in the "early summer" of 2008. Nick MacKechnie, a senior manager for Microsoft's New Zealand operations, wrote in a blot post that, "we would like to remind you that Windows Xp Service Pack 3 (SP3) will be released to Automatic Updates shortly." Once Microsoft flips the switch, users with Windows Update enabled will see their machines download and install the service pack automatically.
