Avast Antivirus, the popular antivirus application which currently has millions of users in almost every corner of the world, may cause an unexpected behavior of your Windows operating system if certain conditions are met. According to a blog post on the Avast forum, users of older versions of the antivirus may encounter difficulties when trying to run the Windows XP System Restore function. It seems like users of Avast 4.8.1169 who try to restore their systems using the utility included in Wind... ...

Fonts shipped with Windows XP use embedded bitmaps to provide legibility at small sizes on the screen. Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) does not display these bitmaps but instead renders the outlines. These outlines are not instructed (hinted) for good legibility and the results are poor. Microsoft YaHei Regular and Bold Version 5.00 have been [...] ...

Despite the fact that most of you prefer XP to Vista and would rather Microsoft extended XP's shelf-life , several new and improved features available in Vista would be great to have in XP. This new functionality may not be enough to get you to switch to Vista, but that doesn't mean you're out of luck. Let's take a look at a few ways you can incorporate Windows Vista's best features into your current XP PC for free. We're going to focus on Vista's small and large features that are missing from XP, separated into three categories: applications, functional, and aesthetic (e.g., transparency is aesthetic, the new start menu search is functional). This list is not exhaustive, but it does cover the features readers feel make Vista worth it . Bring Vista's Best New and Improved Apps to XP First, aside from some of the small operating system improvements we'll go into below, Vista also bundles up a few new and improved applications worth mentioning. A Better Explorer: Windows Explorer is one of the most improved applications in Vista, thanks to added features like breadcrumb navigation, better file previews, and more. There are a few add-ons that add some of these better functional adjustments to Explorer, but in general XP users might want to consider replacing XP's Explorer altogether with something like Xplorer2 ( original post ) or significantly beefing it up with a tool like QT TabBar ( original post ). You can ...

Windows XP SP3, the final service pack for Windows XP, was released to manufacturing a few weeks ago, and popped up on Windows Update about a week later. Even though the service pack is rather light on actual new features, it still caused a few problems for some users. Despite these problems, some benchmarks show that while SP3 delivers better performance compared to XP SP2, Microsoft seems to have solved many performance issues with Vista, turning the company's latest OS offering into the better choice for gaming - according to ExtremeTech. ...

Last week, we reported on a peculiar price difference in Australia between the Linux and Windows versions of the Asus Eee PC 900, the new model in the Eee line. The Windows model was 50 USD cheaper than the Linux model - the Linux model did have a bigger hard drive, but interestingly, the version with the smaller hard drive was not available as a Linux machine. This gave rise to speculation that Microsoft had been putting pressure on Asus to favour Windows XP over Linux. It appears Microsoft's assault in this segment of the market goes deeper than just Asus and the Eee alone. ...

Since the old tech, well-intentioned or not and alive or not, was apparently incompetent enough not to document his work in a clear and easily found way, untangling the mess will take far longer than the day I estimate it will take to make everything nice and clean and new again. > > Mberg, > > I would say - overall, I agree with Malke - you would probably be better > off > flattening the systems and making them your own in any case.
