IStartedSomething.com has a teaser image of the Live Mesh client for Windows Mobile which was demoed at Tech.Ed Australia . The rumor is that this will be available publicly in the coming months. In the broader picture syncing of data is just one of three components to the Live Mesh platform. They envision unified device management to remotely manage health, status, location and capability of devices; unified application deployment with synced configurations and settings for those applications; and finally unified data management across any device. Imagine putting a Zune on the Live Mesh and allowing it to sync with your unified music library that spans across different computers, different devices and even different platforms. Unfortunately I don't see any mention of the Live Mesh Remote Desktop capabilities coming to Windows Mobile, but it still sounds like a great application. Comments [0] ...

Hmm...take a look at this video at 1:10. There seems to be an HTC Touch Dual running what looks to be Windows Mobile 7. The interface is congruent with the leaked screenshots that we spotted of the next-gen OS back in January. Kudos to wmpoweruser for the keen eye. Comments [0] ...

Yes, the Windows Mobile client for Live Mesh is alive and well... but it's not ready for the general Mobile populace just yet. Handhelds should see it "in the coming months" according to Long Zheng who got a preview at Microsoft TechEd Australia 2008 this morning . Interestingly we all get so focused on data synchronization in the Mesh it's hard to remember that Microsoft intends for it to be much more. How much? This lengthy theme says it all: " ...unified device management to remotely manage health, status, location and capability of devices; unified application deployment with synced configurations and settings for those applications; and finally unified data management across any device ." I've seen bits and pieces of this type of functionality within Windows Mobile for years (think Remote Wipe, Exchange profile settings, etc... ), but that word "unified" leads me to think we'll see more focus on extending and blending the Windows and Windows Mobile ecosystem. And that would have far more impact than just data synchronization. I'm still sorting this one out in my head for a follow up... meanwhile, tell me what your impressions and, more importantly, your expectations are for Live Mesh. ...

Webapp Trapster maps speed traps on roads near you, and offers Mobile phone applications that will alert you when you're coming up on one as you drive. Trapster's trap maps are all user-generated—as one Trapster user drives down the freeway and spots a trap, she hits a button on her Mobile phone's Trapster app to report it. When you approach the same area running Trapster on your phone, you get an alert, and then you can confirm that the trap is indeed in that area. Right now Trapster offers cellphone apps for Windows Mobile, the BlackBerry, the Nokia N95 and other S60 smart phones, and an iPhone 3G app is forthcoming. We haven't had a chance to test Trapster Live on the road yet, but you can log onto the web site and check out the traps near you right at your browser. Thanks, Fritz! Trapster ...

Microsoft this week stopped supporting Deepfish, its Mobile browser research project that was an example of the company's software-plus-services strategy. The Deepfish browser displayed Web pages on Windows Mobile phones just like they look on a PC and then let users zoom in and out of parts of the page they were interested in examining closer. The browser worked in conjunction with Microsoft servers that delivered the Web pages to the phones. [ Get the latest on Mobile developments with InfoWorld's Mobile Report newsletter . ] Microsoft first announced that it was working on the project in 2007 but started developing the browser the previous year. "Mobile browsing is now advancing to the point where Mobile devices rival the desktop -- which is what we wanted to see," according to a blog post on the Live Labs site announcing that Microsoft was retiring the service. Mobile browsing has indeed progressed. Slow Mobile data rates once demanded that content providers develop custom sites that would load quickly for Mobile users. While content providers continue to create such Mobile specific sites, increasing Mobile data rates allow a better browsing experience even for standard Web sites designed for the PC.  Apple's iPhone  browser, for example, has won praise for delivering standard Web sites in a very usable manner. Other companies continue to develop new technologies to improve Mobile browsing.  Opera's Opera Mini , for example, ...

Filed under: Internet , Windows Mobile , Microsoft , Mobile Minute , Browsers A year and a half after introducing an innovative web browser for Windows Mobile, Microsoft is killing the project. Back before there was an Opera Mini or an iPhone version of Safari, the Deepfish web browser offered a way to display full desktop views of web pages on a tiny browser, allowing you to zoom in on the area you want to read. The browser was developed by the Microsfot Live Labs team and was never released to the general public. But I wouldn't be surprised if some Deepfish code has found its way into the upcoming Internet Explorer Mobile 6 . In a blog post , the developers behind Deepfish say the goal was never to build a complete browser, but rather to show that an innovative user interface could make for better Mobile browsing. The team also implies that Deepfish helped inspire the development of full desktop views in other browsers like Safari, Opera Mini, and Opera Mobile. You can check out a video shot early last year of Deepfish in action after the jump. http://www.ivisit.com/ "iVisit has launched a public beta of our ground breaking multiparty audio/video conferencing application for Mobile devices and desktops. With iVisit, you can use your Windows Mobile phone or Windows/Mac desktop to connect to other iVisit users and communicate face-to-face from anywhere, transmit Live video of your surroundings, and host or attend online meetings. iVisit works cross platform and cross carrier, enabling Mobile-to-desktop, Mobile-to-Mobile, and desktop-to-desktop connectivity." Communication can be a tricky business, and business class Windows Mobile devices rarely ship with all the tools businesses need. However iVisit seeks to fill a void in the market with the simple idea that sometimes you just need to see others. Or have integrated Push-to-talk, or being able to report your location to headquarters via GPS. iVisit looks like it offers a fairly nice toolset for managing Mobile workers. What are your thoughts? ...
