You may have already heard that, along with the rest of Windows Live wave 3, the next version of Windows Live Messenger (version 9.0) will have a new user interface. After being tipped off by an unaffiliated yet trustworthy source who – naturally – doesn't want to be identified, Messenger Stuff can now reveal that the new interface will use the graphics effects available through WPF [Windows Presentation Foundation], where supported. To put it simply, this finally means that we will see transparency effects in the various Windows of the program, possibly similar to those already seen in Yahoo! Messenger for Vista . We are led to believe that the actual design has not changed much but the WPF effects have been integrated well in what is bound to be a popular new addition. Windows Live Translator is coming to Office 2003 or 2007 as a Research pane option. According to the MSR-MT Team Blog , the new feature will be coming out soon as an automatic update to Office: We have officially handed over our code to the Microsoft Office team for the integration of the translation tool directly in the Research Task Pane. Once they have finished their own testing and "flipped the switch" on their side, the feature will auto-update in existing versions of Office. I'll blog about that here again when that happens - at that point, no additional setup steps will be necessary. However you can install it yourself now, if you have Office 2007. The blog post promises installation steps for Office 2003 “later in the week”. The steps for installation are a little lengthy, although not hard, so rather than reproduce them here you can just check out the blog post (currently the screenshots link to an internal website, so they don’t show up unless you’re inside Microsoft, but the steps are clearly laid out). ... The latest tidbit on Windows Live Dev , a new version 2.0 of the Messenger library (you can get the messenger library from a .js url on the blog page ). Some worthwhile improvements to the library, of course, including sorted contacts lists, access to contact picture display links, sign in control color customization, new documentation, and more. The Messenger Library is only one of many content features on Dev.Live.com . We haven’t featured the site in quite a while, and since we kind of owe Angus for outing his fan club , we thought we would take a look around. As you can see, site design and navigation are well done. The site is easy to get around, while packing in lots of information: Dev.Live.com offers overviews of developer features of Windows Live and related products, as well as SDKs (Software Development Kits), and forums where you can post questions and/or find answers. We’ve posted on it before, but a shining example of a great SDK is the Virtual Earth Interactive SDK ( composite picture showing each of the views you can click across the top to get ) A favorite project of Angus Logan’s – the Windows Live QuickApps , can be found at Dev.Live.com too.
