Windows only: If you Download a lot of applications from the internet, chances are you've seen an MD5 hash next to the Download link. This unique hash is used to verify the integrity of your Download, ensuring that the file you got is in fact the file you were supposed to get. HashTab is a simple utility that adds a new tab to the Properties window of Windows Explorer that displays the file hashes for that file in several commonly used hash formats. To verify the authenticity of a Download, then, you would just right-click the downloaded file, select Properties, and then compare the file hash in the new File Hashes tab to the hash posted on the Download page. HashTab also compares files on your desktop to help you determine whether or not the files are identical. It's probably not for everyone, but if you do a lot of downloading and are interested in verifying the authenticity of those files, HashTab is a simple solution. Windows only: Free search app Agent Ransack is a tool worth checking out if you've got a file you just can't find with Windows' built-in search or other index-based apps, but you know a few details about it. That's because Agent Ransack, the "lite" version of File Locator Pro, helps you build regular expression searches for seriously complex filtering. In other words, if you know a file starts with "T" but the next letter isn't a vowel, and the file somehow ends with "-klf," you can have Agent Ransack do that exact search, in specific folders, and sort the results by all the standard criteria. The tools requires installation, but doesn't do active indexing, so it doesn't cost any performance hits while still running remarkably small and light. Agent Ransack is a free Download for Windows systems only. Agent Ransack [via Download Squad ] ...

Windows only: BurnAware Free burns data, audio, and video CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray discs. Since we last mentioned BurnAware , it was bought up by a software company, turned shareware, and has now made the round trip back to freeware—so if you ran into the shareware version when you tried downloading it, BurnAware Free is worth a grab. There are still shareware versions that support advanced features like simultaneous disc writing, but chances are you'll be happy with the free version. This one could come in particularly handy if and when you actually get a Blu-ray burner on your PC. BurnAware Free is freeware, Windows only. For other great alternatives, check out previously mentioned ImgBurn or Totally Free Burner . BurnAware Free [via CyberNet ] ...

Microsoft have released English, German, Japanese and Simplified Chinese beta 2 versions of Internet Explorer 8. The installer weighs in at 23.1 MB and users will be required to remove beta 1 before it can be installed. Windows Vista users will have to dig deep to find the uninstaller for beta 1, it is located under: Control Panel, Programs & Features and in the left menu: "Installed Updates" under the listing Windows Internet Explorer 8 . You will then be required to restart your system before beta 2 can be installed. Neowin obviously needs some work , as some pages can only be viewed correctly in compatibility mode which can be activated in the address bar like so . IE7 mode is there, but has been changed to this handy new/updated feature which allows only certain sites to display in compatibility mode, while retaining native mode for other websites and/or tabs. Microsoft yesterday warned users of Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) that they won't be able to uninstall either the service pack or Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) under some circumstances. The warning was reminiscent of one Microsoft made in May , when Windows XP SP3 had just been made available for downloading. At the time, the company told users they wouldn't be able to downgrade from IE7 to the older IE6 browser without uninstalling the service pack. [ Discover the top-rated IT products as rated by the InfoWorld Test Center . ] In a post to the IE blog today , Jane Maliouta , a Microsoft program manager, spelled out the newest situation, which affects users who downloaded and installed IE8 Beta 1 prior to updating Windows XP to SP3. If those users then upgrade IE8 to Beta 2 , which Microsoft unveiled today, they will be stuck with both IE8 and Windows XP SP3. A warning dialog will appear to alert users. "If you chose to continue, Windows XP SP3 and IE8 Beta2 will become permanent," Maliouta said. "You will still be able to upgrade to later IE8 builds as they become available, but you won't be able to uninstall them." She recommended that users instead first uninstall Windows XP SP3, then uninstall IE8 Beta 1; they should then reinstall XP SP3 and follow that by installing IE8 Beta 2. It's unclear how many users the warning is aimed at. Although users running Windows XP and IE8 Beta 1 could manually Download and install Service Pack ...

I was told yesterday that Telecom's Okta Agent Free Email plan - one year of free mobile data for e-mail usage - is now extended until 31st October. I posted about this some time ago when it was originally launched. In short you get a free  Okta Agent Windows Mobile  smartphone when you sign up for 24 months with a Telecom to FLEXI Business or Team Builder mobile voice plans and get the new Okta Agent Free Email plan - one year of free mobile data for e-mail usage! Basically it is one year of free data for POP/IMAP and Exchange ActiveSync - while you are in the 24 month contract and using the Okta Agent - you can check our Okta Agent review here . You can also use this data for downloading attachments from your e-mail server and of course a bit of light browsing - perhaps a link you receive on an e-mail for example. The device is not to be used as a modem for laptops, servers, etc - and a fair use policy applies. For what I've heard this will be monitored, but most people using POP/IMAP and Exchange ActiveSync would be pretty safe. This is from their FAQ: Some examples of where your usage may be considered excessive and/or unreasonable are if you use your OKTA Agent: For sending and receiving extremely large email attachments like TV shows To watch TV programmes or Download other streaming media - video or audio As a modem to Download email or surf the net on your home computer For peer to peer data sharing (BitTorrent for exampl ...

All you need is a supported Windows Mobile phone and your Photoshop.com account ID. Photoshop.com Mobile beta will be available as a free Download in September." Adobe claims that Photoshop.com Mobile will only support the MOTO Q, Blackjack, and Treo 700/750 series, although we're willing to bet most other Windows Mobile devices will handle it just fine as long as Flash is installed. At any rate, we'll let you know the moment it's available. ...

I spoke to Microsoft earlier today about the beta 2 release of Internet Explorer, which can now be downloaded . Here are three features MS says will make web browsing faster and more intuitive: Faster web browsing - MS says it has spent hours in usability labs videoing users to see what they do when web browsing. In IE8 it has attempted to  automate the common tasks people do. I often use Streetmap to get a map and figure out directions for a meeting. In IE8, when I right mouse click on the address, MS' accelerator web service brings up a list of options, one of which can be set to take the address from the my current web page and pass it on to my mapping service - Streetmap. Quicker URLs - While in IE7,  when you type in a partial URL, you are presented with a list of recent sites, MS now checks a partial URL name based on recent sites, History and Favourites. Any part of the URL can be keyed in. Visual Search - This works if you have opted to Download an Open Search Description File from a supported site like eBay, Amazon or the New York Times. These web sites and others that use OSDF present images and text in the search preview window as you type in a search term. I downloaded the IE8 beta 2 earlier. It eventually installed on my PC, after Windows update had downlaoded all those Windows XP patches I had avoided installing. It seems to run OK. I was hoping to write my blog entry using it. But there's a bug somewhere becuase the ...

We’re excited to release IE8 Beta 2 today for public Download. You can find it at http://www.microsoft.com/ie8 . Please try it out! You’ll find versions for 32- and 64-bit editions of Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and Windows Server 2008. In addition to English, IE8 Beta 2 is available in Japanese, Chinese (Simplified), and German. Additional languages will be available soon. While Beta 1 was for developers, we think that anyone who browses or works on the web will enjoy IE8 Beta 2. Before the team blogs about our Beta 2 in detail, here’s an overview of what you’ll find in IE8. We focused our work around three themes: everyday browsing (the things that real people do all the time), safety (the term most people use for what we’ve called ‘trustworthy’ in previous posts), and the platform (the focus of Beta 1, how developers around the world will build the next billion web pages and the next waves of great services). Everyday Browsing We looked very hard at how people really browse the web. We looked at a lot of data about how people browse and tried a lot of different designs in front of many kinds of people, not just technologists. As tempting as it is to list here all the changes both big and small in IE8, we’ll take a more holistic approach. That’s how we built the product and how we’d like to talk about it. From our customer research, we saw that the bulk of user activity outside of web pages involved tabs and ...

One gripe we have had with Windows Live is that everything is all over the place. Instant messaging over here, email over there and nothing really in one core location. Windows live plans to make changes to that. The new Windows Live Hotmail Wave 3 is going to have things like a new UI, IM built into email (probably like Gmail), and an integrated calendar. Combine this with the fact that it’s free and isn’t charging you a monthly fee like someone else we know, makes Hotmail a little easier to deal with. We already know the Windows Live Download is one of the best ways to get your email on your device, but are the new improvements to the Web version enough to get you to switch from the monster Gmail? What we do know is that Microsoft has been in the game for quite a while now and we all are expecting them to get it right. Others have tried to join the cloud PIM game and are realizing it doesn’t “Just work” . I love the fact that Microsoft is listening to its users and actually making changes we would like to see. I might just not delete my @live email after all. Only way to find out is to test it so stay tuned for updates on how our usage of the new Hotmail goes. ...

AT&T this morning announced the new MOTO Q Global, which looks an awful lot like a silver Q9h. Here's what you get in this new device: A Motorola Q Global. A silver Motorola Q Global. A silver Motorola Q Global with Windows Mobile 6.1 installed. Eh hem. OK, OK. The on-board GPS now has access to AT&T Navigator, and that's a good thing. There's no denying that the silver is pretty slick. And the Q9h is an old (and new) favorite around here . But is a new paint job on an aging workhorse really the sort of thing the foundering Moto should be turning to? Still no oft-rumored WiFi? Not even more memory, or an upgraded processor? Never mind that if you're going to tout Windows Mobile 6.1 so hard - remember that it's available as a free Download on the Q9h - you should probably show off the sliding panels in the glamour shot, which even a leaked picture managed to do . Eh hem. To add insult to injury, we have the following from the announcement, emphasis ours: With a new pinstripe design accented with tasteful chrome elements and sleek metallic edging, the new Q brings a bit of class and a little something different to its users. Eh HEM. Don't know about you, but as much as we love the Q9h, we were feeling classy enough before this silvery little devil came into existence. ...
