The opening ceremony to the Beijing Olympic Games kicks off Friday night. Thousands of athletes from around the world are participating in the highly anticipated competition, including one of Winchester’s own. Twenty-year-old Alicia Sacramone, a 2006 Winchester High School graduate and Brown University student, earned a spot on the U.S. Gymnastics team in late July after weeks of anticipation. Sacramone landed in Beijing Friday, Aug. 1, and took some time out of her training schedule to talk with The Winchester Star.   Q: How do you feel about traveling to Beijing and what are you doing to get prepared for competition?   A: I’m excited to be part of the Olympic team and excited to compete at the Games in China. It’s definitely a dream come true to represent our country and compete with the top teams and athletes in the world, in gymnastics and all of the other sports. To prepare, I have been keeping up my conditioning and injury prevention. Right now, though, we have double sessions and my workouts are routine based, focusing on small details to try to get everything perfect. But we throw in some cardio in there as well to keep our endurance up.   Q: What role do you find yourself in as a member of the U.S. woman’s gymnastics team?   A: I just fell into the position of team leader. It wasn’t something I asked for, but I think it just happened naturally since I am the oldest and have a good amount of experience. I guess in the eyes ...

A dead crow discovered in Winchester Monday has tested positive for West Nile Virus, according to a press release from the Board of Health. It’s the first West Nile Virus specimen found in Winchester this year. According to animal control officer Jerry Smith, the dead bird was found at 101 Church St. It was sent to the testing laboratory in Lexington on Monday, and the results came back Wednesday afternoon. “We want people to report blue jays and crows found dead in their yard as soon as possible,” said Smith. “After 24 hours they won’t be testable.” So far this year, Smith said he’s only received a couple of reports of dead birds from residents. The virus most commonly affects crows and blue jays due to their constant diet of mosquitoes, which carry the virus. When a bird contracts West Nile they usually get sick and die quite suddenly, according to Smith. Only fresh specimens can be tested. “If the eyes are sunken, and there are flies all over it, then we won’t be able to test it,” said Smith. If you choose to dispose of dead birds found in your yard, Smith cautioned not to touch it. Use a plastic bag to cover your hands when grabbing the decomposing body and wash your hands thoroughly afterward. Everyone is susceptible to infection with West Nile Virus, but the elderly are most at risk for serious infection, according to the Board of Health. Symptoms include fever, headache, neck stiffness, stupor, and muscle weakness. Make sur ...

Winchester did it. Thanks to the commitment of more than 300 local residents, the town has secured two, 2 kilowatt-hour solar panel arrays through the New England Wind Fund’s Solar Panel Challenge. The town joins only one other community in completing the Solar Challenge “bonus” program, which gave participants the chance to earn two solar panels if 300 or more individual donations were made. Milton will also be getting the two solar panels, according to Kelly Muellman, Green Energy Associate for the New England Wind Fund. The Massachusetts Technology Collaborative Clean Energy Choice Program sponsors the Solar Challenge. “We’re really happy, the challenge went well this year,” said Muellman. “It definitely creates a strong connection in the community to renewable energy.” This is the second year of the New England Wind Fund Solar Challenge, and the first time Winchester has taken part in the program. “We just started as a couple neighbors sitting down and having coffee,” said Susan McPhee, a representative of Sustainable Winchester who helped promote the town’s fund-raising initiative. “It didn’t take a lot of effort to get people interested. I think there is a groundswell of interest in the community for renewable energy.” According to McPhee, a total of 315 families and individuals donated a minimum of $100, or $5 a month for 12 months, to the Wind Fund. “It’s so terrific that everybody put their hands together to support this,” she ...
