Oh-oh. Did you just feel the ground shake a little -- and not only in California's earthquake zones? With new polls showing the presidential race still essentially tied, even after all the conventions' hoopla and doo-dah, another poll that probes deeper finds voters' concerns over national security shifting -- and not in a good direction for Democrats. The elections of 2006, which were about congressional incompetence except when it came to Republican corruption, gave the Democrats control of both houses and showed that their party had essentially tied the GOP in terms of voter respect over national security, long a Republican strong suit. No more. As our blogging colleague Mark Silva notes, the wimp factor about Democrats has returned to shadow voters' minds. The national security gap has reopened. Democrats are regaining their reputation with voters as wimps. Greenberg, Quinlan, Rosner has just released a survey that indicates voters perceive Republicans once again as far and away better on national security issues than Democrats. Forty nine percent of those surveyed thought.......Republicans were better on national security while 35% thought Democrats better. When it came to combating terrorism, 48% thought Republicans superior to Democrats while 33% gave Democrats the advantage. It shows voters once again seeing Democrats as following the polls to determine their national security stances and appearing timid to use force in th ... Source: www.cbsnews.com --- 20 days ago

Register colleague Kevin Ding wrote a great blog item and column about the “bigger, better Andrew Bynum.” But to get a clearer picture of how much “bigger and better” the young Lakers center has gotten since he first started in the NBA, check this photo out. The Los Angeles Times reported today that California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger will sign the state budget Tuesday , a full 85 days late. Considering the 80,000 unpaid state bills that have accumulated during that time, among other things, what better day of the week than Tuesday to sign it? Much as J Wellington Wimpy embodied the antithesis of the tough characters California's governor has portrayed on film, Wimpy often found himself in financial straits similar to those Arnold is in now. And, as Wimpy so famously stated: "I'd gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today" ... Source: www.mobile-tech-today.com --- 14 days ago
Cell phones may finally be up to the task of crashing cars, zapping bad guys and bowling a decent frame. Led by Apple's iPhone 3G, which was released in July, phones hitting the market these days include faster processors and the increased memory that mobile-gaming software needs. Besides Apple's phone, phones made by Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB, Nokia and Samsung Electronics are incorporating new technologies, such as global-positioning systems, touch screens and "accelerometers," which allow gamers to control the action by tilting their phones. To take advantage of this technology, game developers have created a host of new titles that can be played on different brands of cell phones. The games come with more-detailed storylines and better graphics than previous cell phone games. In the end, game developers and device makers hope to remake mobile gaming into something unique, instead of just a little brother to console games, such as those on Nintendo's Wii. Clayton Wakida, a TV news producer from Honolulu, was never into mobile games because they were so "primitive." But after Wakida purchased the new iPhone in July, he decided to try "Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart 3D" from mobile-game developer Polarbit. He'd heard good things about the game and downloaded it for $9.99 from the Apple application store. "I was pretty blown away, actually," Wakida said of the game. In particular he liked the game-play features, which allow ga ... Source: www.newshounds.us --- 11 days ago

DealBook: The Federal Reserve is considering participating in a $75 billion emergency financing package for the American International Group , people briefed on the matter said, in an apparent reversal of its refusal to bail out the sickly insurance giant. Here's how you boost the poll numbers when things are turning to crap in your country:According to Reuters, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, taking a break from lambasting the West over Georgia, apparently saved a television crew while on a trip to a national park. Just as Putin was arriving with a group of wildlife specialists to see a trapped Amur tiger, it escaped and charged a nearby camera crew, the country's main television station said. Putin quickly shot the beast, knocking it out with a tranquilizer gun. ... Source: www.travelgolf.com --- 36 days ago
Nick Faldo clearly doesn’t want anyone on the European Ryder Cup team who reminds anyone that Faldo’s getting old himself. Faldo is a very hip 50 after all. So, thanks but no thanks Darren Clarke, the Rod Stewart look will not be needed. Still, Faldo made a big blunder in searching for young players that almost everyone hates, guys in his own playing days’ image. Sure, Faldo found two in Ian Poulter and Paul “I properly hate” Casey, but he also picked up the European version of a whiny, Wimpy American. In fact, Poulter does this song and whine even better than almost anyone that U.S. captain Paul Azinger is going to be stuck with - outside of Kenny Perry , the ultimate baby fat cat American golfer. By putting the pressure-allergic Poulter on his squad, you have to wonder if Faldo’s not trying to make things more interesting in Kentucky. Giving the U.S. a chance - or at least fooling enough people to watch longer on TV - seems to be the only strategic advantage to adding the one who wears hideous pants. Unless Sergio Garcia is going to break out that all canary outfit from his British Open bomb vs. Tiger again and team up with Poulter in a pairing designed to blind Phil Mickelson. Poulter is one of the biggest babies in golf. He couldn’t stop complaining about the tough position the press put him in after he went off on his tirade about being No. 2 in the world to Tiger (in his own mind). This weekend Poulter’s at it again, moaning ...
