The New York Mets have given general manager Omar Minaya a new contract that runs through the 2012 season. The deal contains club options covering 2013 and 2014. Minaya became general manager in 2004 and was signed to a five-year deal. The Mets made it to Game 7 of the NL championship series in 2006 but were eliminated from postseason contention on the last day of the regular season in 2007 and this year. The Mets next will probably turn their attention to a contract for Jerry Manuel, who became interim manager in June when Willie Randolph was fired. ...

Jerry Manuel is getting another chance to right the New York Mets. After replacing Willie Randolph in June and falling just short of a playoff berth, Manuel was given a two-year contract Friday that includes a club option for 2011. "Jerry did a very good job taking over the club midseason, and we believe that he is the right person to manage our team and lead us to the postseason," Mets general manager Omar Minaya said in a statement. Manuel was promoted to manager on an interim basis June 17, when New York was 34-35. While the Mets built a 3 1/2-game NL East lead in September, they lost 10 of their final 17 games and were eliminated from postseason contention on the final day of the season for the second straight year. They finished at 89-73. Minaya, who received a new contract Thursday that runs through 2012, praised Manuel after the manager steadied a group of players that had been on edge during the final weeks of Randolph's tenure. Manuel joined the Mets as first base and outfield coach in 2005, then became bench coach the following season. ...

The New York Mets scheduled a telephone news conference for Thursday to announce a new contract for general manager Omar Minaya. Minaya became general manager after the 2005 season and was given a four-year contract. The Mets made it to Game 7 of the NL championship series in his first season but were eliminated from postseason contention on the last day of the regular season in 2007 and this year. After Minaya's deal is finalized, the Mets likely will turn their attention to a contract for Jerry Manuel, who became interim manager in June when Willie Randolph was fired. ...

Jerry Manuel has agreed to a two-year contract with a club option for 2011 to become the official manager of the New York Mets. Manuel took over the Mets on an interim basis when Willie Randolph was relieved of his managerial duties after a 34-35 start to the 2008 campaign. New York finished out of the postseason despite a 3 1/2 game lead in the National League East with 17 games left to play. But the club nevertheless compiled a 55-38 record with Manuel at the helm. The 54-year-old spent six seasons as the manager of the Chicago White Sox from 1998-2003, going 500-471 with one American League Central title and AL Manager of the Year award to his credit (both in 2000). ...

It's now been three years in a row that the Mets have blown their chance to do something big, and been marked chokers, under-performers, or whatever other insult the media can dig up. After the 2006 NLCS, Mets fans were happy with the big improvement from the last five years, but disappointed knowing that the Mets had the series won easily and blew pretty much every game they lost. However, both the Mets and their fans had high hopes going into 2007. In 2007, more big players came in, and the Mets were once again, identically like the year before, predicted to win the World Series. Once again, the Mets blew a season in which they should have gone far. Mets fans were starting to lose hope—The old players who had done well in 2006 were fading away because of old age, and the young players were getting older. The Mets had a seven game lead in the National League East division, and ended up blowing the lead on the final game, with their "ace" going less than an inning and knocking the Mets out of the playoffs before the second inning. In 2008, Omar Minaya and the New York Mets made an explosive move, signing Johan Santana. Finally, this was the year to get excited about. Mets fans were positive this year was destiny. However, the Mets got off to a rocky and vigorous start, and halfway through the year, were under .500. Willie Randolph was fired. Interim manager Jerry Manuel came in from the fiery bench coach to the pugnacious and agg ...

The Mets got their man Friday when Jerry Manuel agreed to a two-year extension worth roughly $2 million with a team option for 2011. Manuel did a good job and deserved to come back, but the risk on the Mets' part is pretty small. Two years is not much security for a manager -- even Willie Randolph, with no experience, got three in his first contract -- but Manuel really had no choice, especially when he heard footsteps from Bobby Valentine . If he turned down the opportunity to manage what is likely to be a $150-million team next year, and again a playoff favorite, it would have been a big mistake, as my colleague Ken Davidoff points out. As for K-Rod, that was one costly pitch he threw to J.D. Drew last night, and I'm not even talking about what it meant for the Angels, who are looking at 2-0 death knell with the series returning to Fenway. When you're days away from free agency, it helps to have a huge October -- see Beltran, Carlos -- and K-Rod serving up that home run was not great for his resume. Fred and Jeff, write that one down on the yellow legal pad and circle it for those negotiating sessions come November and December. ...

Here's what Bobby Valentine said when asked by ESPN 1050's and FOTFS (Friend of The Final Score) Andrew Marchand if he would be interested in managing the Mets again: "I am working for a team that needs me and wants me as their man. I love it here, but I am an American and love great challenges. I was a in a Met uniform in the '70s, '80s, '90s, 2000, and would love to be there in the next decade." Um, how is that different than Gary Carter saying he's available to replace Willie Randolph -- when Willie still had the job? Yes, I know Jerry Manuel doesn't have a contract, but the job is his if he and the Mets can agree on terms. Couldn't Bobby V. wait until -- and if -- the Mets say they are opening the door to other candidates? They haven't said that. Carter got killed by the NY media. I have a hunch Bobby V. won't. He is much beloved by certain members of the press here. I've never met him. I have eaten at his sports bar in Stamford, Conn. It's good food at a good price. If he gets the Mets job, do I have to stop eating there for ethical reasons? Maybe I'll ask Gwen Ifill. Bet she thinks it's OK. ...

Drove back from Philly last night after watching CC Sabathia look human at Citizens Bank Park. It was his fourth consecutive start on three-days' rest, and is it possible that Sabathia is getting a little worn out from carrying the Brewers on his shoulders for a month? I talked to John Smoltz about that before Game 1 of the NLDS, but you can read more on the subject later in the weekend when I should have a Sabathia story ready for your reading enjoyment. As for the Mets, wrapping up a three-year extension for Omar Minaya was a breeze compared to the bumpy ride they're having with Jerry Manuel at the moment. I know there's a bunch of you out there who can't understand why Minaya got three years -- with two club options -- especially coming off a pair of September collapses. But the Wilpons like Minaya, they like the stability they have in place now with him as GM, and staying the course is preferable to scrambling the front office as they head into Citi Field next season. The Mets haven't made the playoffs since 2006, but they are making money. Lots of it. And will make even more as soon as the door to the new building swings open next April. With Manuel, there is a much different mindset . The Mets want to bring him back. They really do. But it's a question of his value. As they see it, Manuel was a coach for the past four years, then got lucky to be in the right place at the right time when Willie Randolph was fired. There's no ...

The Mets have scheduled a conference call at 11 a.m. to announce a three-year extension for general manager Omar Minaya, which locks him up through the 2012 season. The presumption is that the Mets will have exorcised their September demons by then. Whether or not Jerry Manuel will be the manager to get them over that hurdle remains to be seen. Removing the interim label from Manuel was supposed to be a slam dunk this week and the Mets had expected to hold a news conference by Wednesday or Thursday. Ideally, that might have helped them move past this season's fold a little quicker. Last year, Minaya made a public decision on Willie Randolph's future after letting him dangle for 48 hours, but Randolph was in the first year of his own three-year, $5.65-million extension. This time, the Mets already have offered Manuel a two-year contract, but he has yet to accept it . Why? Manuel probably thinks he can do better than a two-year deal. After all, Randolph got a three-year extension, and Manuel can argue that he deserves the same, at the very least. Manuel has six years of experience as manager of the White Sox on his resume and he helped salvage the Mets season after taking over for the fired Randolph on June 17. Plus, Manuel is immensely popular in the clubhouse. If this drags on, however, Manuel has to be careful not to overplay his hand. Bobby Valentine may enjoy managing in Japan, but an offer from the Mets could bring him back to ...

A very wise man who has been around baseball since the 70s once told me the Mets would never win anything because of the Wilpons. I'm starting to think he's right. Now they are trying to hold up Jerry Manuel? Save a few nickels for the man who is going to lead their $140 million payroll or whatever team? Pathetic. Small. Typical. If you've been around Manuel at all, you know he's no pushover. If they try to get him on the cheap, he'll tell them to stick it and go back to California. That's the beauty of the man -- he's as comfortable as anyone in his own skin. He wants this job, but he doesn't need it. He wants to win, but he's not trying to prove anything, like Willie Randolph was. The Mets are apparently stupid enough to want to give him a contract that would immediately paint him as weak in the clubhouse. You think players don't immediately sense how much ownership is behind the manager? Ask Willie about that. Maybe the real problem is in the owner's box. And, by the way, Hal Steinbrenner -- who of all of the Sons of Ownership currently running NY sports teams could turn out to be the best -- never ventures into the clubhouse. Never tries to be "one of the guys". Doesn't need to be a pretend jock to feel important. Doesn't get a thrill from one-on-ones with the players. Doesn't sniff jocks at all, from what I've seen. There's a lesson there. ...
