North Korea's claim of resuming nuclear warhead development was drowned out by the US Democratic convention, and likely won't be heard next week when the Republicans take the stage. Whether it is sneaky timing or an enormous bluff, the North can present President George W Bush a full-blown nuclear crisis before he steps down. - Donald Kirk (Aug 29, '08) ... I attended the Spokane Indians baseball game tonight, watching home team relievers cough up 7 runs in the final 3 innings to waste a one-hit effort thru 5 1/3 innings by the starter. Spokane lost 7-6, which is no big deal for me because its a Texas farm club, and I'm one of those lost souls who roots for the Mariners. And the Giants. I pull for the Indians only if its not playing the Seattle or San Francisco farm hands. Fire danger killed the planned fireworks show. So we can use our ticket stubs to attend any other Spokane game this season. But I'll probably pass. If Spokane had a double-A ball club or better like it did in the olden days when it was the Dodgers' AAA club, I'd attend quite a few games. But I'm not too hot on short-season Class A ball. So I'm not going to lose sleep over the loss tonight. And speaking of sleep, I'm headed for the sack. Here's your Wild Card ... ( Full post ) ... Source: www.spokesmanreview.com --- 22 days ago

I'm going to be on Rebecca Mack's new SRadio show (KJRB-790 AM) at 11:45 this morning, to discuss the Duncan case and mebbe the dust-up in the U.S. Senate race launched by that Idaho Republican Party news release about Demo Larry LaRocco's distant past indiscretion. Editor Steve Smith wants to get Huckleberries more involved on the radio. We'll see where this goes. Meanwhile, you can play this Wild Card to start your own threads ... ( Full post ) ... Larry and Chris LaRocco visited HBO Central this morning. We chatted for 10 minutes or so after the Q-and-A. We were reminded by SR photog Jesse Tinsley that LaRocco, then a congressman, was in the old SR office on 4th Street when news broke that the first Gulf War had begun. I remember meeting LaRocco in 1990 before he defeated Republican Skip Smyzer to win his first of two terms in office. We're both grayer now, particularly my mustache. But it was fun reminiscing for a few minutes. Meeting Chris for the first time was an added bonus. Now, for your Wild Card ... ( Full post ) ... Source: www.spokesmanreview.com --- 12 days ago
I'm going to be enjoying our small church's annual baptist at North Idaho College beach around noon today. Yeah, it's going to be hot. But at least we'll be lake side. At 4 p.m. Saturday, I witnessed an outside wedding at Gonzaga on a shadeless lawn. And then served as the emcee for the young couple at the McCarthey Center, better known as The Kennel. I must have sweat a gallon. I'll probably do the same again today. But it's wonderful to share these experiences with young folks, church family, and friends. It's a circle of life thing. I've known the bride Saturday since she was a babe in arms. I'm glad that I've lived in one place this long to have that kind of experience. Most journalists don't. Now, I'll play the Wild Card and hit the sack ... ( Full post ) ... Source: www.spokesmanreview.com --- 1 day ago
Finally, Joseph Edward Duncan III is receding in the rear-view mirror. And we're looking ahead to Barack Obama's speech at the Demo convention tonight and the Repub convention from Minneapolis-St. Paul next week. I wonder if McCain will upstage Obama by letting the VP announcement slip this afternoon. If that's not enough, school and fall sports are about to resume. Never a dull moment. HBO has been above 10,000 page-views for the last 5 weekdays, topping out Wednesday at 11,999. So, things are good here. Now, I'll play the Wild Card ... ( Full post ) ... If the Astros are going to get back into this Wild Card chase, they need to beat bad teams... well, they did that against the Reds, sweeping the 4 game series and need to do that again this week, starting with a 4 game series against the Giants. A lot of people think the Astros have no chance to get back into the Wild Card... I am one to disagree with that assessment. (don't get me wrong... it's a long shot at best)The Astros have 45 games left this season and sit 8 1/2 games out of the Wild Card race... The Brewers are 8 1/2 games ahead of us and the Cardinals are 5 1/2 games ahead of us. I am pretty confident that when all things are said and done... we are at least ahead of the Cardinals. Now the Brewers on the other hand... that's going to be a tough one. Now for the Astros gaining the Wild Card Crown... like I said, 45 games which equals to about 7 more weeks of baseball. Let's simplify this some... 7 weeks, 8 1/2 games behind... that's just over 1 game / week that we need to gain on the Brewers to get in a race for the Wild Card. Shouldn't be too hard right?... right?? Well... we'll see. The Astros have been playing very good baseball lately(8-2 out of the last 10), but then again... the Brewers have as well(8-2 out of the last 10). But stranger things have happened... The Astros could continue to stay hot and win another 4-5 games in a row and the Brewers could hit a drought and lose 4 or 5 in a row... all it w ... Source: foxsports.com.au --- 15 days ago
