So, over the past few days everybody's been abuzz about Sarah Palin, and more specifically alterations made to a wikipedia entry on the new GOP vice presidential nominee. A whole bunch of changes were made to the page by a user with probable connections to the campaign right before the announcement that the Alaskan Governor would be John McCain's choice for running mate. Or, maybe it was Palin herself. Then again, maybe it was Tina Fey .... TechPresident lamented the lack of speed with which the McCain camp got search ads up and links to pages with relevant biographical info on the candidate. Quite possibly, the news may not have been made privy to McCain's search ad folks soon enough to make that happen as rapidly as it could have. Now a search on "Sarah Palin" or "Palin" brings up an ad reading, "Get The Facts on Governor Sarah Palin. John McCain's VP Choice!" It goes to a Palin-centric page. Stories in the Washington Post and NY Times also analyze the Wiki situation. The Times report notes, "In modern politics, where the struggle is to 'define' yourself before your opponent 'defines' you, Wikipedia has become an important part of political strategy. When news breaks, and people plug a name into a search engine to find out more, invariably Wikipedia is the first result they click through to; it is where first impressions are made." That pretty much hits the nail on the head; there's not a heck of a lot more to say than that, really. ...

And it promises to be the most wonderful thing ever. Already I've put some machine configuration instructions in there for a change everybody needed to perform today, and I was permitted to just send the link instead of the instructions. I'm finding holes in the instructions and patching them, and building up a troubleshooting section. This got me out of having to write a formal document in a Word template that didn't even fit what I needed documented. Meanwhile, the prime moving force behind wanting me to do this has started arranging the Wiki, and somebody else has discovered it and started adding material. :) ...

Thanks to successful projects like Wikipedia or Wikitravel , wikis have quickly become a standard tool on the Internet, but in academia, the anonymity often associated with publishing in wikis is a key factor that works against them. Tracking down the exact history of changes in a Wiki entry can be a convoluted process, yet being able to exactly attribute a certain statement to one writer is at the heart of the academic enterprise. Mememoir aims to provide a Wiki that is heavily focused on authorship and can help to dispel the prejudices scientists have against publishing in a Wiki-like format. Wikis in Science Mememoir is a completely new development and as of now, its only deployment is in the form of the WikiGenes Wiki . Both Mememoir and Wikigenes, a database of literature about genetic information, were created by Robert Hoffmann, a fellow at Society in Science in Switzerland and a visiting scientist at MIT. For scientists in academia, publications are the lifeblood of their careers. Having published in a Wiki is not going to persuade a tenure track committee anytime soon, but the systems that Mememoir puts in place might just make those contributions stand out a bit more. Besides attribution, Mememoir also gives its users the ability to rates authors and their contributions. The developers are still looking at their options for possibly open-sourcing the code behind Mememoir. As Robert Hoffmann pointed out to us, the project ...

The September 5, 2008 edition of The Chronicle of Higher Education http://chronicle.com/infotech contains an article about a new online medical encyclopedia that will go live by the end of the year. MedPedia will be written and edited by contributors holding an M.D. or PhD in the biomedical field. The medical field is once again joining the Wiki world by introducing a new medical encylopedia that hopes to "set itself apart from existing medical websites." MedPedia is the brainchild of James Currier, a Silicon Valley entrepreneur, and is backed by prestigious medical institutions such as the Harvard Medical School and the Stanford School of Medicine. Edited by qualifed professionals in the medical field, MedPedia will contain pages for more than 30,000 known medical conditions and thousands of prescription medicines. The National Institutes of Health and the American College of Physicians have also contributed content to the project. Each page will contain all the information available on a subject as well as links between topics, updates on the latest advances, and translation tools that will make the information available in other countries. Once the site goes live, this vast amount of medical information will be available to the public. This site could be another valuable resource on medical information for medical professionals, the in depth researcher, or the casual user. The article states that if the MedPedia project complies wit ...

Amazon launches SoundUnwound Wiki for music fans Online retailing giant Amazon has announced the launch of SoundUnwound Wiki like online service. The service enables the web user to edit and add information. But it requires to be approved by moderators before it goes online. For starters, they have included information borrowed from Internet Movie Database and Musicbrainz. Amazon is also not allowing users to include the information hosted on this site on their own websites. It would be good to see if they can provide Widgets or any other tools for this purpose. With all the brouhaha over Broadway Boulevard lately, we thought it would be a good time to revisit the concept of Complete Streets. In a recent StreetsWiki entry, Andy Hamilton gets back to the basics. A Complete Street is a roadway designed to safely accommodate all users -- pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists, transit riders, and those with a disability. For decades, traffic engineers have designed streets, particularly urban arterials, primarily for the efficient movement of private motor vehicles. Residents across the U.S. are demanding street features that consider the needs of other users. Word. In fact, with Congressional legislation in the hopper and the backing of one of the nation's most powerful lobbies, the AARP , the Complete Streets movement may be poised to go mainstream in time for next year's federal transportation funding reauthorization. Writes Hamilton: Since the early 2000's, state laws, local ordinances, and regional transportation funding agencies have begun a quiet revolution, adopting Complete Streets policies (though not usually using this term). Such policies are not one-size-fits-all, and need not be threatening to traffic engineers. They generally require that, depending on the context, roadway construction projects must include consideration of its various users. Now that higher gas prices have everyone from seniors to school kids looking at car-free means of transport, there is a lot of Complete Stre ...

A friend of mine, a professor at an Ivy League university, specialises in research into transgenic mice, learning how DNA modifications affect intelligence and memory. A few years ago, after some genetic tinkering, he created a batch of mice of quite spectacular dimwittedness. They were useless in the maze, ditzily wandering about with no sense of spatial awareness and incapable of finding the cheese after repeated attempts. This wasn’t the only interesting thing about these mice. Every one of them had a most unusual pigmentation, at least for mice: they were blond. This was huge. ‘You’ve found the blond gene ...
