Ok here's a good one: US Wii with DMS chip, 3.1U Firmware, original wiikey. Did shortwire install (my 9th one) and all looks good under a microscope. Originals read, backups do not. Upgraded wiikey to latest (1.9s or x or whatever the version is - the one with the three dudes see no evil, hear no evil, etc), upgrade tests good then writes good. Same results - can read originals, not backups. Problem now - cannot read upgrade 1.9, or any of the configs. tried gcos 1.3, 1.4, etc, it spins, and when it should spin at a faster rpm, it spins down. Still reads originals. Is this related to starting with Firmware 3.1u? Strange part is, it could read the upgrade disc, and perform the upgrade. Help! My launch day Wii is not working, so this additional purchased Wii not working yet. All help is appreciated. Hobby-Boy. ...

Engadget is reporting that some recent unofficial Wii modding news has had a couple of interesting breakthroughs. First, it seems that a team has released what is being called the "first custom Firmware for the Wii" that supposedly allows writable DVDs to be read in emulators. Second, the folks from TeamShift have shots of a "working" PSP emulator for the Wii. Unfortunately "working" only means between 4 and 8 frames per second, so still a long way from playable. Croakyvoice writes "Waninkoko has released the world's first custom Firmware for the Nintendo Wii, which is installed using the twilight hack; among its features is the ability to allow writeable DVDs to be read in emulators. From the readme: 'The Custom Firmware installs as IOS249 and it does not modify any other IOS so it is secure to install and has been made to be used ONLY with homebrew software. This is a custom IOS, an IOS modified to add some new features not available in the official IOS.'" Read more of this story at Slashdot. ...

Hola, Wiibrewers! This week's been pretty hectic for us here at QJ thanks to all the news that poured out of E3. But still, the Wiibrew scene managed to kick up its own storm this week, which I daresay was much more exciting than what we got from E3! We got plenty of news for you this week , so hang on to your hats! News from the Wiibrew Front Big big big - I can't emphasize that enough - big news this week on the Wiibrew front is the release of the Custom IOS37, basically the first ever custom Firmware for the Wii. Waninkoko , author of the installer, also released a Wii DVD Dumper to show the potential of the project. A second version of the program was released not soon after, which is described to have cleaner code than the first release - which means less trouble with the big N. On the other side of the Wiibrew community, although running along the same vein, Wii homebrew developer Bushing has discovered an exploit that allows ISOs to run on unmodded Wiis. This little discovery may have legal repercussions. To avoid them, Bushing has contacted Nintendo to discuss the issue, but they failed to respond even after three emails were sent. Doubtless we'll hear more on this in the near future. To make this week complete, we also have news from Team Twiizers , the pioneers of Wii homebrew. According to the team's Marcan, Beta 9 of the Homebrew Channel is also being developed, although he wasn't too generous with the details. Marcan ...

Although Team Twiizers and Wiibrew developer waninkoko aren't seeing eye to eye right now, waninkoko still managed to update two of his custom Firmware programs, the Wii DVD Dumper and the Custom IOS Downgrader . No changelogs were provided with these new updates, so we don't know exactly what was changed. We have yet to hear from waninkoko on the current situation between him and Team Twiizers, but he did give what may be a sly comment on the side. In his blog, he gave the following comment as his parting note for the holidays and the release of the new updates: 2008/08/01 - My last gift before holidays. Three new applications for Custom IOS! As always they are not useful and dangerous. Enjoy them (if you can). At any rate, practice caution when using these programs, and consult the readme for additional information. I just recently got a Wii which gave me an excuse to actually turn on my Actiontec MI424-WR wireless capabilities. I was a bit dismayed to see that it offers WEP by default, but there is a WPA option, so great... I thought. WPA was a no go. I have gotten the Wii to connect with WEP, and it'll work fine that way. Anytime I try similar options with WPA it just won't connect at all. I'm assuming that this router only supports WPA1, no? I'd like to use the Wii to buy some virtual console game, but I don't like the idea of transmitting anything over WEP. Here's the router's info Firmware: 4.0.16.1.56.0.10.7 Model Name: MI424-WR Hardware Version: A Is the WPA implementation just buggy and poor? Anyone have any thoughts or workarounds? Should I try to get a new router? ...

Wii homebrew developer waninkoko has released an update to one of his more popular programs, the Custom IOS Downgrader . If you missed the previous releases, this program allows you to downgrade your Wii's Firmware. I'm not exactly sure what the changes in this version are, as no changelog was provided. Although waninkoko did provide a short (although vague) description of what's new, the Googled translation was mangled up enough so as the changes are still vague. Still, it's what we have to go on. Here is the Google -translated message from waninkoko. If you can provide a better translation of the original Spanish for us (follow the source link below), please drop a yell in the comments section. This new version is quite improved. First download all the data to the NAND and install them once they are downloaded. Thereby avoiding the downgrade to stay half a failure to connect to the Internet. In addition, the CB downgradea / mine (applications to run games GC. Waninkoko has rolled out another update to his custom Firmware installer for the Wii, Custom IOS. A couple of functions have been dropped in the code, but the major change is the switch of the IOS base, which is now 36 instead of 37. Here's the changelog for this version: [CIOS36 rev 04]: The base is now IOS36 IOS. Dropped check id in the title role ES_OpenTitleContent (). Dropped checking permits in the function ES_ReadContent (). Remember to read the documentation included in the download archive for more information. XavProg, Bonx's replacement for InFeCtuS's NAND programming software, has just been updated. This new version sees the addition of a couple of new features designed to further improve the app's functionality. Here's the changelog: Automatic fill of the first and last blocs number after identifying the nand Parameters not updated correctly for the Wii nand (have to fill it manually before) The main difference between this program and InFeCtuS's NAND programming software is that it directly connects to the InFeCtuS chip by using Libusb32 instead of the InFeCtuS driver. You'll still need the InFeCtuS modchip to run it properly though. The download doesn't have a readme file bundled with it but you can find a Help page at the source link. Cooling off from updating his Custom Firmware software for a while, Wiibrew developer waninkoko has released a new application. Called Channel Loader, it lets you launch any channel of any region installed on your Wii console. According to the readme, you'll need to install the latest Custom IOS to make it work properly. You can download it through the related articles below. At the TeknoConsolas forums however, SquidMan points out that his WiiMU program does the same thing. You can download that through the related articles below as well, and you can judge for yourself which one suits your needs better. Hello - I am really confused. I tried calling cox, but they are no help. I have three computers, one wired directly to the modem (XP SP2), one wireless laptop (vista), another wireless laptop upstairs (XP SP2), and one wireless Wii downstairs). I use a Linksys WRT54GS router with the latest Firmware 7.2. I called to complain about my download speeds, had a tech come out and test nothing, just look at my 11-year-old com 21 modem and sell me a new motorolla modem for $50. He hooks me up to the test site at lvcm.com and my computer wired directly into the modem hits 21 mb/s. My wireless laptop, ironically sitting not 2 feet away from the "storage" computer, hits 16 mb/s. Not happy about the difference, but still happy. That is, until 5 pm. Hubby gets home and I show him the speed test. Well, guess what? I get my old speeds again... 2 mb/s. On the computer wired directly into the modem (using xp). On the wireless, I actually score about 3 mb/s, but I figure that into a fluke in traffic. Here's the interesting part: my upload speeds are HIGHER than my download speeds on both computers... 4 mb/s. I call cox. They tell me someone's hijacking my connection. Yeah, if that were true, then why: aren't the modem or router lights blinking even if I have no activity; why do I not broadcast my ssid; why do I not use 801.1g with WPA-PSK encryption (not the best, but still, should be enough to defeat most wannabe hackers for more than 6 hours); why is ...

Word has it that the first custom Firmware for the Wii is now out, and this one enables writable DVDs to be read in emulators as well. What you see here is courtesy from TeamShift who have also recently unveiled a claimed working PSP emulator for the Wii, but unfortunately the frame rate is not up to par at all with a 4 to 8 fps range. Hoepfully a future beta version will see the emulated games hitting their normal speeds, but should that happen expect Sony and Nintendo to start an even more intense rivalry.
