Relatively new Linksys WRT54GS (7.50.5) installed at home. Wife's personal Dell lapper (Vista) and Linksys WGA54G Game Adapter both connect to to the Network and run perfectly. Since she works one day a week from home she has a lapper supplied by her employer. The IBM she had connected just fine to the home Network but they just replaced that with a Dell Lattitude D620 running XP Pro and I can not get this thing to connect to the Network wirelessly (I can with cable connected directly to the router). The machine recognizes the SSID broadcast with excellent reception I enter the key (double and triple checked for accuracy) and no luck. I took the thing to Uno Pizza on Saturday as they have a Wi Fi hot spot and it connected just fine. When she takes it back to work and the IT people check it runs just fine on their hot spot. They had a Dell utility running the wireless card and I asked them to allow Windows to run the card thinking that might be the problem. They did change that for me and still no luck. Can't connect. I called Linksys support last night and sat on hold for 20 minutes. Finally connected to hard to understand but friendly level 1 tech support agent who got as far as having me change the router security from WPA to WEP before hanging up on me and still now luck. I had already tried removing all security before calling anyway. I am thinking this may have something to do with the antivirus software on this PC but I have limit ... I was told by T-Mobile that I should use the Mobile Network and not WiFi on all my settings for internet browsing and all else, since the WiFi will only work where there is a signal and not automatically switch to Mobile Network when WiFi not available. I was trying to browse the net while I was out and couldn't since no WiFi was around...shouldn't it automatically switch to mobile Network when this happens? Thanks for your help!! ... While all of the cities that EarthLink and MetroFi have abandoned have declined to take over the existing WiFi Network, the city of Santa Clara's electric utility said it plans to take over MetroFi's free muni-WiFi Network, which was shut down last month when MetroFi essentially went of business. The utility had already planned on using the WiFi Network to support a remote meter reading project. Now it also says it would take over the task of supporting and possibly expanding the free wireless Network. The utility said it has contracted with a company called 180 Connect to conduct a signal strength study to enhance service in weak reception areas and upgrade equipment in those areas. Advertisements and the requirement to login to MSN will be removed. For more: - check out The Santa Clara Weekly Related stories: MetroFi shutters its service. During the company's earnings call yesterday with investors, Cablevision COO Tom Rutledge said that the company spent $20 million between May and the end of June building the WiFi Network, which it will unveil soon. Hey, a couple of days ago, my iPod Touch (8GB), froze up on me, nothing worked, so I was forced to restore it through iTunes. It was fine, and I synced all my music right back on it. My only problem, is that the WiFi refuses to work. I know it is not the router, as it used to connect to this internet, and the router works fine for my laptop. I also know it is not the router because the same message pops up for every Network I try to connect to. The message is "Unable to Connect to Network '(Network Name)'" I have tried reseting the Network settings, and I have wiped out (restored through iTunes) my iPod multiple times. I'm not sure what to do, and I thank you in advance for any advise you may give me. Thanks again -Apple309 ... Source: www.bl.ac.id --- 20 days ago

New York City is shunning the idea of muni-WiFi and instead is looking to provide Internet access to residents with affordable fiber-optic cable connections to homes. Mayor Michael Bloomberg and other members of the citys 15-member Broadband Advisory Committee are entertaining broadband ideas, and its clear WiFi is not an option. "Were not going to go the direction of a Minneapolis or Philadelphia in New York," Kunal Malhotra, a spokesman for New York City Council member Gale Brewer, told Computerworld. "We dont think municipal WiFi will succeed." One option New York may pursue is expanding on a technology fund that already includes $4 million from Verizon, which is building a fiber-optic Network in the city with the stipulation that it has to set aside money for providing Internet access to underserved areas. The fund could be expanded with $4 million each from the citys two cable providers, Time Warner Cable and Cablevision. ... Source: divilinux.netsons.org --- 10 hours ago
