I'd like to break a cardinal rule of writing and use a sport cliche: the last few days have passed in a Whirlwind. All us FQRs worked the final day of BMX, witnessing three Americans medal in the first-ever Olympic BMX event. Congratulations to Mike Day, Donny Robinson and Jill Kintner for winning silver, bronze and bronze, respectively! Today both the women and men raced in mountain biking, which the French, Swiss and Germans dominated. Both BMX and mountain biking took place in brutal heat. I hid under the shade of an NBC umbrella while I waited to gather quotes and found the spot ideal for meeting a diverse group of people: cameramen, sports correspondents and Chinese workers waiting and watching in case of any technical problems in the broadcast zone. read more ... I figured I'd share our old home. Well one like it. It is the home of one of our old neighbors - same model (condo). I just saw it is for sale: http://www.movoto.com/real-estate/homes-for-sale/CA/San-Jose... I was actually curious on the price and came across this. We drove by the area yesterday and it struck me as VERY tired and run down. I am sure not much different than when we lived there. But our perspective has changed with time. (We are used to new and fancy for the same price - with our move to LCOLA). I wondered how much people were paying to live there these days. Some observations: Listing says 2 garage spots. Wrong-o. Unless they got some special treatment or we were really screwed. No garage, for one. We had ONE parking spot - for a 3-bedroom home. (That kind of sucked, but we got a significant discount on the price of the condo because of this, AND there was plenty of parking - which you can not always say of condo developments. I remember driving there all hours of the day/night/weekend to check out the parking situation, before we put an offer on the place. The 1-parking spot thing was a little unsettling). If you click on picture #9 you can see how tiny our kitchen was. It looked EXACTLY like that. *sniff* (The memories). But you could barely open the fridge door all the way. Quincy Lucas always carries a scarf when talking to people about domestic violence. The multicolored garment belonged to Lucas’ sister, Dr. Witney Rose, who wore it when she graduated from medical school. When Rose was murdered by an ex-boyfriend in 2003, Lucas kept the scarf as a reminder of how precious her sister was to her. Lucas had that scarf with her when she took to the podium and nominated Delaware Sen. Joe Biden for vice president Aug. 27, during the third night of the Democratic National Convention. “I try to wear it to all of my speaking engagements to remember her and to keep her close,” she said. ‘I wanted that moment to slow down’ Lucas used her personal pain to help others, establishing a scholarship in Witney’s name and working to teach youngsters how to curb violence in their communities. Although she had never met Biden in person, her name came up when workers with Sen. Barack Obama’s campaign were looking for a Delawarean to place Biden’s name in nomination for the second spot on the ticket. Biden drafted the landmark 1994 Violence Against Women Act, and has been known for his efforts in curbing domestic abuse. Lucas teaches fourth grade at Silver Lake Elementary School in Middletown, but lives with her husband, Dr. Kevin Lucas, and their two sons and a daughter, in Dover.
