My brother Jim, a retired school administrator/lawyer, enjoys Atlantic coast “whale watching.” This year he had a personal record breaker: five “Right Whales” on one watch period. Fisheries are being demolished, while nations argue over who and what is to blame. Photo: Christingo (flickr) As fisheries decline, nations are busy arguing over who's to blame. Japan's whaling industry is the latest to come under fire. Japan has claimed that Whales are responsible for the diminishing numbers of fish, likely because Japan has also recently been making noise to end the ban on whale hunting, and is looking for support internationally. At the annual meeting of the International Whaling Commission this week, a coalition of conservation groups and scientists accused Japan from diverting responsibility for the declining stocks. Daniel Pauly, director of a renowned fisheries research center, rebuffed Japan's claim, saying "Blaming Whales is an issue that is not only false - Whales are no more responsible than the Martians - but which prevents the very small resources of West African countries from being devoted to understanding the real reasons why their fisheries are declining." According to Dr. Pauly’s decade long study, only about 1% of what marine mammals eat is in competition for human consumption. What Japan is not acknowledging are the fleets from East Asia and Europe which have been legally — and frequently illegally — fishing along the coast of west Africa, where developing countries depend on the quickly disappearing fisheries. Managing fisheries has proven difficult with international waters being outside of co ...

The last post from Dave at the IWC meeting… At last… IWC60, also known as the 60th International Whaling Commission meeting, is now over. I started writing blog in the press room yesterday, while listening to the incredible (and often entertaining) rhetoric emanating from the pro-whaling nations, especially those whose votes have been “purchased” by Japan. The [...] ...

Using statistics, researchers can use observation data of whale numbers to predict how many Whales are not seen, giving a better estimation of the overall population. Counting Whales, future water availability and preventing marine pests entering Australian waters will be some of the topics discussed today when Australia's leading environmental statisticians meet in Melbourne as part of the Australian Statistical Conference. El-Shaarawi from Canada's National Water Research Institute presents his work on issues in the development of water quality indices. ...
