Perhaps they did have an alibi. Defeating the once-dominating Eielson Ravens last week could be a good one. But the first half of last Saturday’s game between the Valdez Buccaneers and the Barrow Whalers was nothing but ugly. It was cold and windy with the wind chill below freezing when the Bucs and the Whalers met on Parker Field, but that could hardly justify sloppy execution by both offenses in the first half. The first three drives ended in traded punts and things only got worse.   Albert Gerke missed Robert Vigo with a pitch on an option, giving the ball to Valdez deep inside Barrow territory.  Valdez graciously snapped the ball 20 yards backwards and over the head of their quarterback. It was eagerly recovered by Forrest Ahkiviana, who rumbled for seven yards.   The Whalers then one-upped the Buccaneers when Vigo mishandled an exchange with Gerke and coughed up the ball to the visiting team.   Not wanting to be outdone by their courteous hosts, the Valdez quarterback danced out of three near-tackles only to throw the ball to Cody Romine. Unfortunately for him, Romine was on the Barrow team. Now possessing the ball deep in Buccaneer territory, the Whalers decided to move backward, thanks to penalties, bad passes, and dropped balls, and finally fizzled out in four futile plays, turning the ball over to the Buccaneers on downs. On the ninth drive of the game, competency loomed as Valdez completed two successful plays in a row. ...

After losing its Big 3 Conference opener to Brockton a week ago, the Durfee girls soccer team and coaches Tony Martin and Jim Byrne attended the Boxers’ game against New Bedford and were amazed at how good the Whalers were as they overpowered Brockton. Thursday night before a very nice crowd at Mac Aldrich Field the Hilltoppers turned in an amazing effort and stunned the previously unbeaten Whalers  2-1. “New Bedford (3-1-2) is an outstanding team,” said an emotionally charged Martin moments after the final whistle. “The soccer gods were with us tonight, what an effort by our girls, especially having to play without our senior captain (midfielder) Vanessa DeMelo (hamstring). She’s been a major cog for the last four years. We inserted (sophomore) Danielle Gauvin and she played phenomenal tonight.” With a little more than one minute left to play, Durfee seemed to have the game in the bag, holding a 2-0 lead. However, the Whalers’ Alyssa Roach found the left corner of the net with one minute to play, and then with five seconds remaining New Bedford converted on what everyone thought was a direct kick from 45 yards out, a perfectly placed shot that just got over the desperate leap of Durfee keeper Jordan Prescott. That led to a wild scene with the Whaler players mobbing each other and their fans going nuts in the stands while the Durfee players and fans stood in dumb, depressed silence. Then it all changed when the officials ruled th ...
