Southern League MVP Gaby Sanchez helped lead the way again for Carolina in an 11-2 win over West Tenn Thursday night in Game 2 of the Northern Division Championship Series. The win gives the Mudcats a 2-0 series lead with three games at Five County Stadium, beginning Saturday night. Sanchez went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs Thursday night to boost his average to .625 in the series. Teammate Chris De La Cruz had another big night at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three runs batted in as well. He's hitting .714 in the series. Carolina's bullpen was brillant again, holding the Diamond Jaxx scoreless for the final four innings in relief of Aaron Thompson who worked five innings for the win. The Mudcat bullpen has now worked eight innings in the series without giving up a run. Game 3 of the series is set for 6:15 p.m. on Saturday night at Five County Stadium. Game 4 (if needed) would be Sunday at 2 p.m., with Game 5 (if needed) on Monday at 7:15 p.m. If there are any changes to the schedule because of Tropical Storm Hanna, we'll let you know as soon as we do here. ... All right, let's try to get September started with a preview of the East. I also bumped the West preview up to remind you. Hopefully, I can preview every team in September. Here's how I see the East. I know a lot of people are picking Montreal to have the best record, but the Canadiens were 25-12-4 on the road last season, and I just don't think a repeat of that is possible. They also were +35 on special teams, and while that is who the Canadiens are, that's also a high standard to repeat. That said, I see the top of the East divided by five or six points, so it really should be close. Ottawa sneaks in and takes the Northeast, while New Jersey has added some key players in Bobby Holik and Brian Rolston to a mix that is really pretty deep. I see them ending up with the best record in the East. Pittsburgh has a ton of talent, but it also lost some key players in Marian Hossa and Ryan Malone. We'll see if the Penguins take off after a run to the Stanley Cup Finals or if they take a step back. I'll admit, there's a part of me that believes they will go one an incredible role. Oh well, that's the problem with predictions, there's a very good chance you're wrong. 1. New Jersey _ Right mix for Lou's boys, and Martin Brodeur is the best goalie in the NHL. 2. Ottawa _ The defense needs work, but the star players should rebound this season. 3. Washington _ Loss of Huet could be significant, but Caps should have enough to win the Southeastern ...
