American Ports in Demise, Massive Layoffs & Waves of Unused Equipment Litter West Coast Port Facilities: By Marc Chamot After five years of consecutive growth at West Coast Ports, the global economy has cut deeply into dockworkers jobs and massive loss of revenues for our American port facilities mainly in the West Coast. The downturn has also devastated cargo carriers, and it’s estimated that over 200 ships have been pulled from service around the globe. “Dock work has practically dried up” says one West Coast dockworkers union. “It’s been a steady slide for the past two years or so.” Numerous West Coast Ports have most of their equipment sitting idle; rows upon rows of unused machines, tractors and trucks just sitting there doing nothing. The hours worked at Bay Area Ports were down 13.4 percent in 2007, according to Pacific Maritime Association. And in 2008, the hours worked were off another 10.3 percent! “It’s something we’ve never seen before, it’s such an anomaly, I don’t think there’s any chance to recover from this for a while” says Pacific Maritime Association Chief Executive James McKenna. The annual full time wages for dockworkers are $200,000 for foremen, $145,000 for clerks and $125,000 for long shore workers. Those days of earning that kind of money may be gone.
