Q. Why did the semantic Web cross the road? A. @#$% you. Standards promised to keep the Web from fragmenting. But as the Web Standards movement advances in several directions at once, and as communication between those seeking to advance the Web grows fractious, are our Standards losing their relevance, and their ability to foster an accessible, interoperable Web for all? ... User Research in the Design Process -Vince Frantz Ever stared at a blank Photoshop screen and just needed to “get started designing”? Ever been handed a 40 page spec sheet that you needed to build from? Ever wonder if this feature should even be built in the first place? Not to be confused with usability testing – user research can help get client, designer and developer all on the same side of the table. A solid understanding of the user leads not only to true “usability” but even better ideas to build in the first place. With the right combination of tools and process – even designers and developers will demand user research with every project to the benefit of all. Vince Frantz is an information designer and principal of Frantz I.D. Since 1996, he has spearheaded a broad scope of design projects across Web, intra/extranet, print and motion media. Prior to that, Vince was an interaction designer and illustrator at Root Learning, Inc. After many years doing design and development, in 2005 he began designing a new form of organization that would enhance the user centered design and development process. In June of 2006, Sprokets launched as his own “ideal client” that would always align business strategy with end-user needs. Vince also founded the non-profit Public Square Group to help cities in Northeast Ohio employ a user centered approach to the design and development of sustainable skateboard parks. In spite of the widespread acceptance of Web Standards by a specific segment of the design and development community, hosts of professionals are working in direct opposition to these Standards. A significant reason for why this is happening and how those not working with Web Standards justify their activity boils down, I believe, to something regrettably simple: nomenclature. It was with some measure of satisfaction that I saw Justin Cutroni's blog on Google Analytics compliance with Web Analytics Association (WAA) metrics Standards. Cutroni works for EpikOne, a Google Analytics Authorized Partner. You see, I'm asking all of the vendors I'm evaluating in Web Analytics Report to explain how they comply with the Standards. The timing of this blog was perhaps no coincidence, as I've been working with Cutroni on updating my evaluation of Google Analytics. ... Source: www.cmswatch.com --- 18 days ago
Readers of the Web Analytics Report know that there are many steps to creating a successful Web analytics initiative -- such as developing a strong organization, and creating processes to ensure that analytics get integrated into the mainstream of a company's operations. If you're a Web analytics manager for a large organization, one of the biggest challenges you likely face in creating enterprise-wide Standards is at the very heart of Web analytics: data collection. Typically lots of energy goes into data accuracy, but it's easy to forget that it accuracy is tied to complete data collection. Most issues of data accuracy can be traced back to tags not being applied to all pages, or within applications, or that variables aren't set up to capture the required data. As Web analytics becomes more critical to senior managers, the need to create "apples to apples" comparison of site performance among different regions, different countries, or multitudes of company divisions increases in importance. To develop this level of macro-reporting, you need to make sure that the data collected from your Japanese site maps to the same variables as the data from your site in Spain, the USA, and so on. This will give you the confidence to develop roll-up views of activity across the entire enterprise, as well as individual site performance reports that may be judged through use of the same metrics and with a data set that all stakeholders agree to ...
