Submitted by: 17 Software that follows the links from a particular website (the Crawler part) and displays them in a user friendly flowchart format (the visual part). Ever visited a website you liked so you followed one of the links? Then followed the ones from that and so on? This could get inefficient; browsing is linear. That's where my idea comes in. You could see exactly where all the links go. It could also be used as a powerful analytical tool. Webmasters could see which sites have the most links in there niche, and link them to improve there own search engine page ranks. An ad supported extension could be built into firefox and IE would run on the clients' computers to do this. It could even be expanded into a decentralized search engine. Searches can be greatly customized without invading privacy, because user data would be stored on their computer. I thought of this idea when... I thought of this when I was browsing through blogs that each had literally over 50 links on their blogrolls. A friend of mine recently slimmed down on Weight Watchers. She joined two months ago, and in just a couple of weeks, she'd shed 10 pounds. She'd been trying for a year to lose weight, but nothing worked -- until now. Why did Weight Watchers work so well? For a really fascinating reason: because it isn't a normal diet. It's something more. Something fun. It's an RPG. The Weight Watchers program is designed precisely like a role-playing dungeon Crawler. That's why people love it, stick to it and have success with it. And it points to the way that we could use game design to make life's drudgery more bearable. Let me unpack this a bit. When I asked my friend to see how Weight Watchers works, she showed me the ingenious system. "The best part is the Web tool," she said, pulling it up on her laptop. When you first log in to Weight Watchers, it determines how much food you'll be allowed to eat that day, expressed as a number of "points." My friend gets 23 points per day. Each time she eats a piece of food, she enters it into the online database, and it calculates how many points she's used. A small apple is one point; a piece of fried chicken is seven points. When she first started the program, she was stunned at how quickly she burned through her daily points. A single bagel was six points -- more than 25 percent of her daily quota. "How the hell am I going to do this without starving?" she wondered. But pretty soon she learned to hac ...

You can now get a browser search bar for the open-source Wikia Search engine: Wikia Evolution . A search bar is pretty much a requirement to put an engine in front of users' faces, so this is an expected move by the Wikia Search project. But Wikia Evolution moves the concept into new territory. See previous review: Wikia Search launches the hackable search engine . Via the Evolution toolbar, Wikia adds a feature to Google and Yahoo searches: It displays rating stars and an "add" button after each result. Clicking on these links adds info into the Wikia Search index, to refine its searches when you use that engine. Rating Google results for Wikia Search. It smells. Wikia's Jimmy Wales makes a big deal about how his rating system and open engine are superior to closed systems like Google. Yet this tool asks users to rate Google's own results in order to improve Wikia's. It works, and it's a very clever way to build on the work of others, but it essentially appropriates Google's Crawler results for another engine. I admit this argument would hold more weight if Google and Yahoo allowed users to rate search results. But I believe that eventually they will (beyond current limited experiments), and then we'll have another problem: feedback confusion. How will users determine which service they are rating a result for when they decide to provide feedback? Mashing sites and content together is the grist for a lot of Web innovation. But ta ...

Autopia has always covered the creative and extremely diverse endeavors of Lotus Cars and their industry spanning engineering arm. Everything from eco friendly sports cars to a loudspeaker device that lessens the chances of a blind person getting hit by a quiet hybrid. But all of that seems pedestrian and obvious compared to the brand's latest and greatest concept vehicle. Yes, it is a vehicle in the sense that it moves but you wont see it on any roads or race tracks. In fact, unless you head South, as in the South Pole, you likely won't ever see it. The CIV, or Concept Ice Vehicle, was designed specifically for the rigors of traversing Antarctica. It will also make history as the first vehicle to run successfully in Antarctica on bio fuel. Hey, it rains a lot in Hethel. The engineers must have gotten bored. Check out the video to see this thing in action. Lotus, a company best known for lightweight sports cars with razor sharp handling , has developed the extreme ice Crawler to assist researchers in a 3,000 mile journey across the continent of Antarctica called the Moon Regan TransAntarctic Expedition . The expedition aims to educate on climate change and raise awareness of how Antarctica’s fate affects the whole environment. Explorers will conduct scientific experiments to highlight the environmental issues and live Web feeds will allow Web goers to follow  their daily challenges and achievements. The bio fuel powered CIV is mo ...

Microsoft today announced a partnership with Zvents, a local search and advertising network , to integrate with MSN City Guides. Through the partnership, local advertisers will be able to target audiences with specific information about events and promotions. Zvents has over 250 media partners, which will provide content to MSN City Guides, accessed by Web Crawler. User-generated content will also be part of the mix, which will include blended local search results. This seems to fit with Microsoft's recent talk of focusing on search niches and really developing them through innovation. It's part of the grand plan to catch up with Google. "Our goal is to deliver an incomparable local event experience to MSN users," said Manu Vij, Channel Manager for the MSN Local group at Microsoft. "With Zvents, our users can now quickly and easily find any event happening in their local area -- whether a hot rod car show, concert in the park, back-to-school sale, or celebrity book signing -- virtually whatever suits their interests is presented in detail and immediately accessible." "Together with MSN, we're now able to provide millions of people with the most complete and robust index of local content," said Ethan Stock, Zvents CEO and founder. "As a part of the Zvents network, MSN adds tremendous value to local advertisers trying to both broaden their reach and more precisely target customers with timely information across the Web." What do you think ...

ShopWiki may be the best shopping search engine you don't know about. Because it's Crawler-based, it doesn't rely on managed XML feeds as do its better-known competitors over at Yahoo, Google, Shopping.com and the plethora of other comparison shopping engines. And because it searches the whole Web, CEO Rory Cumming says it delivers the lowest price about 80 percent of the time. I caught up with Rory yesterday. He came on board last Fall, along with a fresh infusion of funding. He's focused on optimizing the site for search, as well as on international expansion. The first week the site launched a German version, it garnered more traffic than Shopping.com in that country. His sights are also set on Australia, France, the UK and the Netherlands. At home, he's taking another approach: creating storefront technology for sites too small or unwilling to create and manage feeds for the larger shopping search engines. He's also struck a deal with a motorcycle afterparts dealer, and a high-end luxury goods browsing site is also on the drawing board. ShopWiki's edge, he claims, is shopping's long tail -- its ability to help consumers find products they otherwise couldn't easily find online. It works really well at that, too. SEO is going to be the ongoing challenge. Virtually all the site's traffic comes from Google -- a fact that applies to other shopping search engines as well. Cracking the code of shopping search customer retention could rem ...

New page The Creative Commons Metadata Scraper is a simple Crawler used by the license engine to detect metadata stored in pages. == What it Does == The metadata scraper is used by the license deeds to extract embedded metadata from pages. It currently scans the page for [[RDFa]] using [http://pypi.python.org/pypi/rdfadict rdfadict] and [http://www.w3.org/2007/08/pyRdfa/ pyRdfa]. == When it Happens == When a creator or copyright holder [http://creativecommons.org/license selects a license], they have the opportunity to provide additional metadata about there work. This includes information such as creator and medium, as well as how the creator would like to be attributed. If this information is provided, it is encoded in the HTML generated using [[RDFa]]. In order to provide more context relevant information for visitors, the license deeds load a script which looks at the referring page for metadata. If found, the metadata is used to update the deed and display additional attribution or CC+ details. == Developer Information == Metadata Scraper is implemented in Python using the [http://cherrypy.org CherryPy] Web framework. The source code is available in the <code>metadata_scraper</code> module in [[Source_Repository_Information#Subversio ...

Marvel's super swinger is making a comeback in Web Of Shadows!. It's fair to say that Spider-Man games of late haven't exactly been inspiring representations of everyone's favourite neighbourhood wall Crawler. Last year's sloppy third entry in the filmic tie-ins was passable at best, and the enormously dull, kiddyfied Spider-Man: Friend Or Foe was what most considered a character-killing travesty. No more than a year on, and Activision is returning once more to the blockbusting franchise for something - they hope - that is seen as an entirely different iteration on the Web spinner. Last week, Kent Sugarman of the Google Adsense team helped users understand how to get higher quality and more relevant Google Adsense ads to display within your content: 1. Use text in addition to images when possible. Please note that the Crawler can't read text contained within images. 2. If you use images, be sure to title them appropriately and provide descriptive ALT tags. 3. Try imagining your site without pictures or dynamic content. This will give you a good idea of what our Crawler reads. If you lack imagination, you can try turning the images off in your Web browser. If your site uses a lot of these features, make sure you provide enough text-based content in one of our supported languages to effectively convey the topic of your site. If our Crawler doesnt find enough text, you may get poorly targeted ads Comments Tag: Google Adsense Add to Del.icio.us | Digg | Reddit | net/storeIt.jsp?u='+encodeUR IComponent(document.location.href)+'&t='+encodeURIComponent(document.title)+ ' '"> Furl Have a bookmark! - ...
