In an effort to keep strong medicines out of the wrong hands, and to protect the city’s clean Water Supply, a collaboration of physicians, pharmacists and law enforcement officials have set up the Medication Disposal Program. The program will kick off on Saturday, Oct. 4 between 9 a.m. and noon. Community members are asked to bring unwanted, unused or expired medication to the Rose Baker Senior Center located at 6 Manuel F. Lewis St. in Gloucester. “We will ask for no I.D. or explanation,” said Gloucester Police Lt. Mike Lane. “People can just drop off the medications and leave.” Joan Whitney, director of substance abuse prevention for the city of Gloucester, came up with the idea for the program when she heard about it being implemented in nearby towns. According to Lane, many programs similar to the one beginning in Gloucester were run by pharmacies and hospitals, which is technically illegal. Police are the only people lawfully allowed to accept prescription drugs, and officers will be available at the Rose Baker Senior Center to do so on Saturday. Gloucester police have noticed that pill abusers often steal prescription drugs from a family member or friend’s medicine cabinet to Supply their addiction. Lane hopes that by removing the Supply of available drugs, the program will prove successful in combating drug abuse. “We need to get [the drugs] off the shelves and away from potential abusers,” he said.
