A smaller proportion of consumers are expected to buy extended Warranties for electronics items in the months to come compared with the recent past. That's not wishful thinking from Consumer Reports, which has long recommended against these add-on Warranties as typically unnecessary and overpriced. It's a prediction from the Consumer Electronics Association, a trade group that represents electronics manufacturers and a number of retailers, too. In a keynote address to the Retail Vision conference, Tim Herbert, the CEA's senior director for market research, said the association predicts that 16 percent of U.S. households will buy or consider buying an extended warranty when purchasing electronics items in the coming 12 months. That's less than half the 36 percent that bought or considered such Warranties for electronics items in the year prior to the study's release. In an interview with Channel Web, a business website, Herbert is quoted as saying the drop is "a testimony to the durability of electronic devices. For the price, these products last a very long time and in the majority of cases they will operate with little or no problems for their useful life." In general, Consumer Reports' repair histories for major electronics goods support that view, showing failure rates in the first few years of life that are typically quite modest; for example, only about 3 percent of flat-panel TV sets fail within the first three years. ...

Certified pre-owned Warranties vary slightly by manufacturer, but they’re all similar. They combine an original manufacturer warranty with an extended CPO warranty, then offer inspections, roadside assistance and other perks. The benefits are clear: Instead of assuming the risk that comes from not knowing a used car’s history, customers get peace of mind. (They also get to pay a bit extra in the exchange.) Chrysler has decided to try and break out of that pack by offering extended service contracts for Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge CPO vehicles. The contracts are divided by what they cover. For example, the Lifetime Powertrain Care upgrade covers engines, transmissions and drivelines; the Lifetime Added Care Plus covers those components plus interior electrical functions, fuel systems and suspensions; and the Lifetime Maximum Care plan covers everything “with only a few exclusions,” according to Chrysler. Chrysler didn’t announce the prices with these plans, so it’s unclear how much more customers will be asked to pay for the benefit of a lifetime component warranty — or whether or not customers will want the Warranties at all. ...

We just got an email from reader Mike, who claims to be a former Best Buy employee who regrets selling all those extended Warranties now that he's actually trying to use the one that he purchased. While my story hasn't cost me thousands of dollars, it's brought me a lot of disappointment with the company I used to work for. For two years and three months, I was employee [redacted] at Store [redacted]. I sold computers, service plans, accessories, Geek Squad services and everything else they wanted me to like a good employee. I often defended the company online from people who had complaints and offered advice on what to do, based on my "inside" knowledge, to get these issues handled. So imagine my disappointment in the Geek Squad upon having to use a Performance Service Plan (PSP) on a Samsung monitor I had purchased. On the morning of August 20th, I discovered my Samsung 204T was not responding to anything I was doing. After determining it was not the computer, based on a second monitor I have, I decided to make use of the PSP I had purchased for the monitor nearly three years prior when I was still working for Best Buy. I brought it to a different store than the one I worked at, and after having a small chat with the Geek Squad employee about it, he determined it would need to be shipped off to the repair facility. That's fine, I was expecting that. I asked him point blank "What are the turn around times like these days?" "7-10 days ...

Buying a home is a big investment, and it is wise to consider what, if any, Warranties are in place on the home you are about the purchase. When Purchasing a New Home: Typically, Warranties for newly built homes offer limited coverage on workmanship and materials to components such as windows, appliances, heating, air-conditioning, plumbing, electrical and major structural for a specified periods. When Purchasing a Resale Home: The builder warranty coverage may have expired for some or all of the components depending on coverage time provided by the builder so you'll want to know what is and is not still covered. If you are purchasing a resale home with limited or no builder warranty in place, there are companies that provide a residential limited service plans referred to as "One-Year Warranties" These service programs cover the repair or replacement of many of the most frequently occurring breakdowns of home system components and appliances due to normal wear and tear. For a fee ($299-$500), these home warranty plans go into effect on the day of close and can be paid for by the buyer but are commonly paid for by the seller as part of the purchase contract agreement. During the service plan term, the buyer will pay a small fee ($45-$65) for each service call incident. This is minimal compared to what you might otherwise pay for repairs without the service plan in place Here are some buyer advantages to having a home service plan: Con ...
