The McCain camp made a clumsy swipe at Obama Wednesday, trying to link him with vapid "hollywood types" like Britney Spears when, really, it's McCain who is the Britney candidate. In a 2003 interview with CNN's Tucker Carlson , Spears argued that we should trust president Bush and have faith that he'll do what's right in Iraq. CARLSON: You're going to be on the National Mall [in Washington, D.C.] soon performing for Pepsi and the NFL and also to support our troops. A lot of entertainers have come out against the war in Iraq. Have you? SPEARS: Honestly, I think we should just trust our president in every decision he makes and should just support that, you know, and be faithful in what happens. CARLSON: Do you trust this president? SPEARS: Yes, I do. Well, in 2008, which candidate has more in common with Britney? Let's see. In March 2008, President Bush gave McCain an unreserved endorsement . The Boston Globe's headline read "Bush says McCain will stay the course in Iraq." In 2007, noted the New York Times , Mr. McCain methodically dismissed as unrealistic every other plan that has been proposed by Democrats as a substitute for Mr. Bush's strategy, including those from Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York, Joseph R. Biden Jr. of Delaware and Barack Obama of Illinois. Funny, that sounds a lot like what Britney thought back in 2003! Congrats to the McCain camp for making the truth of Barack Obama's central contention, that a c ...

Today on Meet the Press, Mike Murphy called the Paris/Britney/Barack ad stupid. He's completely correct, but that doesn't keep him from tacitly pushing forward the racist language that is being used to discredit Obama. While David Gergen has said that McCain is using loaded words in his ads to play the race card against Obama, Mike Murphy did it on behalf of the McCain team on live television. Murphy referred at least twice to McCain trying to seem like the more "adult" of the two major candidates. Speaking of the VP choices, he said: One strategy the McCain guys could do is pick somebody who's all about national security to try to move the campaign more there. Go pick a Bob Gates, I mean, somebody totally out of the politics world to say, "We are the competent adults on national security," and try to make the election more about that to play to McCain's strengths, which, because of the surge, are getting stronger and stronger. Not what the Democrats would've thought a year ago on Iraq. Later, talking about the convention/Hillary Clinton: MURPHY: I will make one convention prediction. I think Hillary Clinton will give a pretty well-received speech, actually. I don't think she'll be the keynote. But--and I can't ever prove this, but I'll predict she votes for John McCain. I'm going to be watching those Chappaquiddick poll results very closely. She wants an adult... MS. MITCHELL: Chappaqua. MR. MURPHY: Chappaqua, excuse me. She want ...

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows , TV on the Bigscreen , OpEd , Reality-Free Thanks to the success of the Sex and the City movie -- and talk of more to come -- the rumor mill has been bubbling with other TV shows making the leap to the big screen. In the case of Arrested Development , it sure sounds like the truth . However, the Friends feature is a rumor that has no legs. Warners owns the property and on July 4th, even though all U.S. offices were closed for the holiday, denied the rumors via the London office. Jayne Trotman, Warner's director of publicity, said of the Friends movie, "(There's) no truth in the story." Just to be sure, Matthew Perry's press rep also denied the rumor. She told the BBC that nothing is happening and the rumor is just that, a shred of news with no value attached to it. Filed under: Comedy , Drama , Romance , Casting , Deals , Paramount , Warner Brothers As Hollywood is not an industry known for letting chick-lit properties slip through its proverbial fingertips, it should come as little surprise that the yay-for-life bestseller "Eat, Pray, Love" -- a memoir by Elizabeth Gilbert about her quest for peace in those three forms following her divorce -- is being indeed developed into a movie by Paramount, with Julia Roberts attached to star and a 2010 release date as rumored by the good ol' IMDb . What's of arguably greater interest in this Hollywood Reporter piece is the fact that Warner Bros. has already snatched up rights to comedian Andrew Gottlieb's riff on the memoir, titled "Eat, Play, F*ck". The novel, to be published early next year, follows a man from Ireland to Vegas to Thailand as he seeks similar solace once his wife leaves him. On the one hand, I'm all for snark, especially in response to such pre-programmed feel-good fare. On the other, this seems like a flash-in-the-pan proposition, unless "Love" hits it big and "F*ck" follows fairly soon after (ain't that usually how it goes?). What say you, readers, about either project? I fully expect the typical fan defenses to crop up, but did any woman out there read that book and happen to be unimpressed? How about any guys who picked it up and couldn't put it down? Let's mix things up here, people! Permalink | Email this | Comments ...

Filed under: Classics , Sci-Fi & Fantasy , Warner Brothers , RumorMonger , Celebrities and Controversy , Family Films , Newsstand Warner Bros has finally broken their silence when it comes to the much talked about Where the Wild Things Are . As you must remember, the film has been dogged with rumors of reshoots and recasting. The last news we heard wasn't good , as the studio had casting calls out for reshoots. But finally, someone has managed to get the studio to say what the heck is going on. LA Times writer Patrick Goldstein sat down with studio chief Alan Horn, who finally gave the studio's side of the story. Horn denied all reports that Spike Jonze had been taken off the project, but admitted the film was being reworked. "We've given him more money and, even more importantly, more time for him to work on the film. We'd like to find a common ground that represents Spike's vision but still offers a film that really delivers for a broad-based audience. We obviously still have a challenge on our hands. But I wouldn't call it a problem, simply a challenge. No one wants to turn this into a bland, sanitized studio movie. This is a very special piece of material and we're just trying to get it right ... The jury is still out on this one. But we remain confident that Spike is going to figure things out and at the end of the day we'll have an artistically compelling movie."
