Clearwire's stock hit a 52-week low on the Nasdaq Tuesday, dropping as low as $8.98 a share. The operator, which is planning to merge with Sprint Nextel's WiMAX business with the help of billions from investment partners Intel, Google and Cable operators Comcast, Time Warner and Bright House, has seen its shares fall steadily since early June. Time Warner Cable is preparing for increasing competition in the market for triple-play services in New York following the news that Verizon Communications is to start installing its FiOS fibre links to customers on 1 August. A report from the Wall Street Journal says the Cable operator is now offering discounts to subscribers who commit to longer term contracts for any of its TV, telephony or internet services; the discounts were previously only available to people who subscribed to a package including all three services. New York's attorney general notified Comcast Corp. on Monday that the state will take legal action if the company -- the nation's second-largest Internet service provider -- doesn't agree to eliminate access to child pornography. Attorney General Andrew Cuomo wants major Internet access providers to agree on steps to remove certain newsgroups that contain child pornography and purge their servers of Web sites that contain child porn. New York has already reached such agreements with AT&T Inc., AOL, Verizon Communications Inc., Sprint Nextel Corp. and Time Warner Cable Inc. "Last week, Comcast joined with nearly the entire Cable industry and 48 state attorneys general and the Center for Missing and Exploited Children to sign an unprecedented, and highly praised, industrywide agreement to fight child pornography," Comcast spokeswoman Sena Fitzmaurice said. "Comcast has been working with the New York attorney general and we expect to become a signatory to his agreement as well." Cuomo was not one of the 48 attorneys general to publicly support the efforts of the National Cable and Telecommunications Association and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children because he said it was not as tough on online child pornography as his own code of conduct. Broadband provider Comcast is pushing back against New York state attorney general Andrew Cuomo's demands to support his anti-child-porn campaign. Comcast and 16 other ISPs signed an agreement with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children , which maintains a blacklist of suspected illegal porn sites — but for Cuomo's office, that isn't good enough. They insist that in addition to blocking websites, Comcast must fall in line with Time Warner Cable, Verizon, Sprint , AOL and AT&T in shutting customers out of all or part of Usenet, the network of Internet-based discussion groups, and contributing funds to root out more child porn providers. It's not the most practical or even Constitutional approach, but a good move for headlines. Comcast has until Friday to respond to Cuomo's request to sign his code and kick in the cash.
